@aleerarose No, it wouldn't be cool, but it would be funny. It's really not going to bother an american that much... specially since if it's a french-language film, we monoligual americans likely won't be able to tell the difference!
Plus, it's hollywood, since when do they ever really try to get details right? This is the land of explosions and optional physics we're talking about! We don't care about logic or fact! (cue sarcasm mode)
@aleerarose I don't think the actress makes the call about doing the accent or not. It's the director's call. So if you want to be frustrated someone for not hearing the accent, don't be frustrated with the actress. Be frustrated with the director. Or, best of all, don't be frustrated at all. Because it is just a movie, everybody knows who the real Coco Chanel is and where she's from. No movie can portray a person perfectly.
The "response/reaction" inserts in the clip are too early. The "point" of the dialogue doesn't trigger, isn't in sync with their response. I'm referring to the to the Coco Channel bio-pic clip.
Nope, Shirley doesn't do accents. Nor for "Madame Sousatzka," a very good movie, if you can find it on DVD. It had to be explained that Madame was an American expatriot living in Europe. I've always loved Shirley, and even saw her in Children's Hour in a movie theater, and boy was that hot stuff then-- lesbians, gasp! I think that was '63 maybe. It's odd that the TV bio-pic had the young Coco very French sounding & then the very American Shirley take over. Audrey would have been perfect.
She is a good actress, but the movie wasn't that good, and they left out important parts about being accused for working for the germans, which best to my knowlege didn't happened, it just should of been put in the movie... it was very boring...
As someone who lived & breathed CHANEL for 18 years (I worked for them! & still sell it on eBay) I can tell you I know tons about Coco. I also know TV and this movie was the pits. Shriley Maclaine must have been friendly with one of the producers 'cause she was totally WRONG for the role. She didn't even attempt to get the french accent down. Unlike Coco she has no charm or whimsy. The old school movie Chanel Solitaire is one worth searching for. Bon chance! tiaandteddy
Your absolute, I don't know jack about Chanel but I knew something didn't add up in the movie concerning the german evasion, and the accent was wrong...
OK, I haven't seen it, but according to highly qualified critics, the movie is a disaster:
1)The movie was filmed in Rome, not Paris...WTF!
2)Chanel was a woman who, although individualist and liberal, had a certain charm with men, but in this movie, they depict her as a ultrafeminist...
3)Coco was from young to old very thin, it was an essential part of her image; Shirley Maclaine should have lost at least 40 kilos to accept that role...
Chanel wouldn't have described herself as a feminist or ultra-feminist, but really, she was in every sense of the word and the movie actually watered her down - she came across mousy when the real Chanel was a lot more fiery.
omygosh this looks absolutely shit. ( i DO love Maclaine in The Apartment, do not get me wrong!)
watch the new one with Audrey Tautou, starring an *actual* frenchwoman playing a frenchwoman in the french language. mano is american tv so crap? i thought it was all good stuff like SNL and The Wire?
C'est dommage! Accents are tres difficile, but I think she was just trying to capture her essence. Remember, Lauren Bacall played her on Broadway, and sure didn't use an accent, either.
They used a lot of different Chanel quotes (some slightly altered) in the movie. I feel kind of weird about the movie, like - "Well at least there's a Coco movie now", but at the same time, "It's so inaccurate."

Why couldn't they have gotten a French actress to play the role? Or at least someone who was willing to at least attempt an accent.
How would Americans feel if you had one of your icons played by a French actress that didn't even attempt an American accent?
So ridiculous.

@aleerarose We probably wouldn't care.

@Scardy So if they made a movie about Obama it would be totally cool for him to have a strong French accent then? I see.
The way I see it, if your going to make a movie about a foreign icon at least get details like voice correct.
