They re-wrote it. In the original Mabel dies. Mack goes to see her on her death bed but still doesn't tell her he loves her. He only sings Happy Ending after she's dead. In the new revised version they get together at the end. The reason it was such a flop was because it was such a heartbreaking show and afterwards everyone was feeling cheated and upset.
Yes, its the wonderful Robert Preston doing the solo vocals......he was The Music Man in the musical of the name....and also in Victor Victoria, the movie. One hell of a talent!!.Lives on thru his long work history.
Great video! I wish that I could have seen it performed in full--London or anywhere it played. The musical score is marvelous and addictive. I can't get the songs out of my head. I do believe that it was a "Producers" type flop. What a loss! If David Merrick et al. did this, shame on them.
I have a friend who was in the original B'way cast; he seems to think that the reason it folded was a sort of Bialystock & Bloom scheme to profit from a flop. At the point Merrick posted the notice, the box office was supposedly good. It's a shame it hasn't been brought back, in any case.
its coming to the carnaige hall in dunfermlin in 2008 the tickets wil be sold out so try to get the tickets erlay my dads a profesional he if playing a lead
It was 'a flop' when it came out - yet its been revived all over the place -at least the great songs!!
The charismatic Robert Preston does the main vocals on this song.See him in The Music Man or the film version of Mame. And in the film Victor Victoria.Great Talent.

The soundtrack is from the original Broadway cast album.
The "about this video" should note the Robert Preston vocals.

Look up the story of its producer, David Merrick, and you'll have the answer.
