Hey 19 came out when i was 16-17. I used to roller skate to it. I was really fast! Anywho...Dan was played on 10 in our house everyday...no parents!!!
jeffreeks description of this video and of the current state of music is right on. I was born in 1977 and I feel like I missed good music almost entirely! Today's bands are largely products manufactured from the top down--today I was in Wal-Mart and all the top-shelf CDs were American Idol winners! Famous for being famous instead of for having any discernible talent. Thank God we can still listen to Steely Dan!
@raggabass, your knowledge of music is somewhat lacking in depth and breadth, typical of the MTV generation - what you see is all there is and you PUT DOWN music you can't relate to or appreciate. Ask a trained musician your Hall of Fame question.
@raggabass I respect your opinion, but must correct a wrong fact: their music was NOT the norm in their times. NOBODY was doing what they did. The climate back then (late 70's) was mostly hard rock, reggae, punk, disco... The way they melded sophisticated jazz harmonies within a pop-rock context was truly original then.
I also like Devo, however obsolete they may sound to some...
@xebio6 You are right...they were definitely outstanding in their field! There was some other jazz fusion going on back in the day... not much, & not on the charts either...but...I LOVED IT!
What a great tribute Jeff. I remember getting up in the morning as a school boy in the 70`s in New Zealand listening to Steely Dan. Great way to start a day !!!!!!!!! Gavin
Jeff, you did a great job creating this tribute video to one of the best bands ever. I have loved Steely Dan since I first heard them on my parents car stereo in 4th grade. Becker, Fagen and Company are smooth. Thanks for posting this.
i'm 18 and i couldn't agree one bit more with your statement.
ask 95% of the bands on the "rock" (right) scene today what a seventh chord is and you'll get an odd look and maybe a prompt shove into the horde of youngsters attempting to dismember each other in the mosh pit.
I was born in 1991 and the music coming out in the 90's was garbage. Nothing comes close to the complexity and pure compassion that Steely Dan gives off through their music. I was lucky to be raised in a household that understood what good music really was. Steely Dan forever.
Can't agree more - my wife and I are doing our best to get our songs out. Have a listen - we put them out bare bones on youtube we recorded some on our laptop and have made an album 'Love Peace.'
We believe in the songs so much we gave away the phd, jobs houses and find ourselves poor singing our songs on the streets of europe but we are doing the most honest thing we have ever done.
I just reached the 2 decade mark, I'm 21 and haven't found a better band since I was 7 years old! That's when I first heard them and no comes close to the incredible music they play.
you must've been a fricken hip 7 yr old. Most youngsters can't cut loose with their Fisher Price Jack-in-the-boxes! I wonder what your reading list consists of.
Agree 100%,with your commentary. What happened to the musicians able to play harmonies, to arrange songs, horn sections and vocals. I am not too old (yet) but have tough time to find some music which can be called such today. Going to see SD in Paris in July!
We agree with the commentary there.. we are attempting to put some songs out with melody, harmony, and instrumentation and content - have a listen. Mary and Martin
Nice homage. Real music, written and performed by real musicians, is still produced, unfortunately, it's not available on commercial radio, one has to seek it out now. We were so lucky to have been exposed to it incidentally. Nice work here, thanks again.
Could not agree more with your commentary. "My Humps" is the nadir of pop music's steady decline, for sure.
No one really cares about musicianship anymore. Nor do they have to.
Steely Dan's music lives. Black Eye Peas and Jonas Bros, will not.
Don't worry my friends; succeeding generations will always find their way back to the good stuff. They won't know how or why, but they will. Sounds a little like Field of Dreams.. ha
Very nice tribute. I finally got to see them in 06 and 08. True legends in every sense. I just wished they would have played some different song selections in concert.
Saw Steely Dan in concert when they visited New Zealand in 2007 . A life-long dream realised !!. Everything about them is cool, can't think of one dud track over all these years !
Absolutely superb compilation Jeff. I was back from overseas duty with the armed forces in the 70's when I first heard Dan, and now as " an old guy" still love to listen to their music,
17 years old and proud to proclaim my love for the Dan and most of the music from the 70s! I envy those who were there to live it; when people didn't always say: ''Steely what?'' when they asked your favourite band; when good music was the norm ; and when looks weren't Grammy Award-winning, the sound was.
Why aren't there bands who take pride in meticulously producing an album anymore?
I dream of the days where albums came out, and every song was great. "Can't buy a Thrill, one of my favorite albums. Its so sad to see the music industry degrade into oblivian.
Yep, Agree with all you say/write...but there are a LOT of creative bands making music now, as if the tide MAY be starting to turn back. Sadly, the trick is to NOT listen to your radio, because corporate media controls the message - and who's popular - independent radio rules for good/creative music, but it will never enable cultural statements like these bands made in our day.
I'm thinking aja was the best album of the entire 70's
it just never gets old and I got new when I was dj-ing at a local radio station so i was one of the first to hear the album and a year hasn't gone by when the album wasn't played at least once...been a long time and it's standing up quite well and puts all of the new garbage to absolute shame
@svenvranken it's great to know that the Dan still continues to catch on with a new generation.....shows that the Dan will withstand the test of time....keep on listening and appreciating WB and DF; you'll be richly rewarded in the years to come!!

right on bro. i dont listen to FM anymore, ever since the day a cple yrs ago when i heard Free Bird 5 times in 5 hours on 3 different stations. dont get me wrong, its a good song. all cookie cutter stuff today, esp. miley cyrus. i mean, WHAT IS WITH THESE KIDS??? lol
amen my brother!! im sure you have noticed, the music now has gone down hill. todays so-called musicians cant write their own music, so they now re-record (sample) the true music from the time of when music really touched your soul!! thank you!!
The Royal Scam is their best album. I haven't heard all of their albums but I don't see them topping that shit. I love that they're named after a dildo.
Well done amigo! Similar to Frach438, my bro' bought home Katy Lied in '74/'75 and that opened up my eyes to the real deal!! Oh yeah! Shit..I forgot about Western World for awhile!!! tks, twb
hehehe hilarious,,,, you dont stump me there. i know your talking about the chorus of goucho. ill have to look up the lyrics...i always thought they said that too...and what is it?
Thanks Jeff. My brother brought home Aja when I was 14 ('77) and that was all she wrote. I couldn't get enough to the point that my daughter loves them (she's 16) and spreads the word. Thanks for taking this 45 year old back to his roots. I'm glad they beat out Eminem for the Grammy. There's hope yet. Peace.
I understand that. My father and I are fans from the first moment we heard them, and when my dad (after 35 years) and me (after 12 years or something) saw these guys playing live in Brussels, these beautiful songs that we've listened to our whole live, it was also hard to control our emotions...
I was lucky enough to get backstage after the recent Liverpool, UK gig. What is great is that Steely Dan fans are all seemingly intellegent music loving people. They KNOW their music, and thats comforting for myself as a fan of 36 years!
The greatest music ever, period. Sheer goose bumps with many of SD's songs. Perfect combo of witty lyrics, jazz harmonies and smart hooks. Timeless. Makes all music of today categorically unnecessary...
It's a total disgrace what music has come to today, The dan were the real thing, true musicians & writers, how we long for these days!! "My Humps" now thats funny, i can't stand BEP & that annoying Fergie, ..
They didnt need or want it. Their whole persona was "in your face, but nicely". So irrevrent were they who named their band after a metal didlo, the laugh is on everyone running around using the name as they quietly laugh under their breath, knowing that most pedestrians dont get them, just the music. In the end, I think that is what they care about.
Agree with your comments wholeheartedly, Jeff!Sounds like we're the same vintage, and weren't we spoiled rotten in the days "when music **was** music"! ;-)
Yes Cat, Thats a good way to look at it, we were spoiled musically. -Thanks for the comments, good to hear there are still people who enjoy accual intruments, producers who accually cared, details, sound quality...and so on. thanks again
Your video tribute is a great "taster" for music fans who were "born too late" to have crafted music such as this coming out of their radios all the time. I'd also add Stevie Winwood, Roxy Music & Steve Miller to the shopping list! :-D
I agree as well. The world is lacking of REAL music today. How I wish we could go back in time and bring the real music back.I am soo disappointed in the music of today.
Great tribute to Steely Dan by the way.I love these guys!
Man, you must have been reading my mind. I was driving home tonight from a gig and thinking pretty much the same thing while listening to some AJA on the CD player! thanks for the great montage!
damn, you are good.i just love steely dan and you did a damn good job on this one..keep up the great work.hard core steely dan fan here since the 70's.
Ive just seen the Dan live in Liverpool UK. I promised myself id do it before i die. Been a fan since 74. Man, what a gig! Love your work by the way, this is a cool piece!
Music has died. When steely dan recorded, they would take up to 2 months just to get the drums sounding right. Todays crap, they just program sound lame "hip hop" drum track. Today, American Idol is the "standard" for music today, lol . . how sad. Americans are getting real stupid. They accept anything they see on TV. TV and the media in general are disgusting. And I hate MTV, of course.
I couldn't agree more with the way music is these days. I mean I'm only 15 and I hate todays music, Steely Dan is great and so are the other bands you mentioned. I hope that my generation will be able to turn music back to the way it used to be.
Steely Dan, what can I say... the best ever! Really enjoyed your video and compilation choice - Western World one of my all time favs (and most of the others.lol) Thank you. x
jeff, hi! here from argentina! south exist!!! i agree, music now is only shit, i love steely dan, i discovered their music 5 years ago, so... well done jeff!!!, no one would said it better!!! (excuse my english!)
AWESOME TRIBUTE! That coming from another 49 year old... =) 'My Old School' is still one of my favorite songs - PERIOD! Love their, uhhhhh, satire (?) on the website, too! And is it just me, or doesn't WB get better looking each year? =) *grin*
I 100%... not even 100... I 200 percent agree with you, todays music is shit compared to how we used to have it... I'm 17 and all I listen to is old music because I hate my generation madly. Fagan and Becker were genious... You don't have people these days like that, people that actually cared about music and made it great!
Thanks, Yea you can see my undying love for great music...I had to express this...thanks you-tube for letting me get this to thousands and thousands...
I saw them here in Las Vegas and it was the best experience ever. I'd rather see a nostalgic band than seeing these upcoming bands. The music industry is going to hell......NEVER hear good quailty sound like Steely Dan or Michael Franks ever. I played the hell out of my Aja cd in college. Many nights of cards and a good smoke with my homeboys while hear Black Cow...good times. Awesome tribute!!!
omg i love you guys.omg im only 12 my dad's a big fan.i agree music today is nothing like the dan ive heard all their albums and they are easily my favorite band of all time
I totally agree with you about music these days, and Steely Dan is probably the best band ever in my opinion. Every music fan should check out "Before the music dies". Just type it in the You Tube Search and the trailer will come up. I highly recommend it.
this is awesome! i'm only 20 but Donald Fagen has been my idol since living in the dorms and hearing Steely Dan freshman year. Saw them in here in Milwaukee last summer, best show of my life.
Great band, great music and great video. 5 stars. I bought the album "Aja" back in the summer of 2000 when I was 14 and ever since then,Steely Dan has been my favortite group (also including Fagen's solo work.) My favorite Dan album is "The Royal Scam."
Thank all of you as well, I will have more and more tributes coming...these all come from the heart and aundying love for music. Being a musician, I feel that the Dan is as well a musicians band. Thank you all again, I love comments. you can tell me this stuff all the time...hehehe
Thanks jeffreeks for this. Steely Dan introduced a lot of rock and rollers to jazz. They are so talented...when I think about their musicianship compared to some of those talentless Brit groups and one-hit garage bands of the 60s, madonna.
Thanks for this video tribute, with some excellent pictures and fabulous Dan tracks. Im going to see them at Aintree racecourse in Liverpool in July. You know, its just one of them things you gotta do before you die. Love the Dan.
Thank you for posting/making this video tribute to the Dan, one of the most innovative, unique, creative bands in the history of rock and roll. Fagen & Becker too are such a great songwriting team. What a fine blend of rock, jazz, pop, fusion and soul. One of the best bands of all times.
Congratulations!!! Awesome tribute thanks for the memories. Steely Dan was just off the chain I love these cats. This is definately period music it brings back all the good memories. I would love to get a Steely Dan complete music collection.
My Old School is Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY, where Don&Walt met & formed 1st "garage band" w/ drummer Chevy Chase of SNL fame. The townie fuzz busted their dorm for pot & the boyz spent a nite in jail. Walt then dropped out; Don got his BA next term. The whole affair PO'ed them enuf 2 write the song & to stay away for >30yrs. They did go back to their old school for honorary degrees in the late '90s.
Thanks for this tribute. Steely Dan has been one of my favorites since childhood. My Father would constantly have the albums playing at our house. For me, no other music can conjure up so many images and emotions. Such a rich and textured sound. Just incredible. Today's 'music' is truly sad by comparison.
I totally agree with isdomdee above , no thanks a Trillion to the power of Dan! I saw them 4 years ago in NZ and they were great , and saw them again in Napier NZ , their 63rd and last concert , Fantastic.

Peace.

Could someone please tell me the name of the very last song played at the end of the video

Was a professional muso, strong led zep influences.then heard SD's album Cant Buy A Thrill in 73.Was blown away, still play it today.
Seen them when they toured Oz.When they played Black Cow I couldt control my emotions .The muso's were superb ,slick etc.
Enjoyed your montage ..thanks Jeff.

Hey, cool.
You used my steely dan wall paper at the begining and at the end. I was kinda stunned to see it there, but it looks great.
Nice video :)
Thanks,

The greatest music ever, period. Sheer goose bumps with many of SD's songs. Perfect combo of witty lyrics, jazz harmonies and smart hooks. Timeless. Makes all music of today categorically unnecessary...
bngrace 4 years ago
It's a total disgrace what music has come to today, The dan were the real thing, true musicians & writers, how we long for these days!! "My Humps" now thats funny, i can't stand BEP & that annoying Fergie, ..

They did not get the sort of recognition they deserved!
aloofbooks 4 years ago 3

CatFiain 4 years ago
I agree as well. The world is lacking of REAL music today. How I wish we could go back in time and bring the real music back.I am soo disappointed in the music of today.
Great tribute to Steely Dan by the way.I love these guys!

I hope that my generation will be able to turn music back to the way it used to be.

gigipo 4 years ago
Exactly right. I'm a 49 yr old guitarist, and the musical
edu. I got from living in the time I did is priceless. But
you should have said "popularmusic", cuz there are still great artists, they're just not getting airplay except on public radio.
randallcasters 4 years ago
I 100%... not even 100... I 200 percent agree with you, todays music is shit compared to how we used to have it... I'm 17 and all I listen to is old music because I hate my generation madly. Fagan and Becker were genious... You don't have people these days like that, people that actually cared about music and made it great!

Thanks jeffreeks for this. Steely Dan introduced a lot of rock and rollers to jazz. They are so talented...when I think about their musicianship compared to some of those talentless Brit groups and one-hit garage bands of the 60s, madonna.
