Unofficially...the SR-71 has maintained level flight at over 90,000 ft. Unofficially the pilot (can't remember his name) said he had to outrun a Soviet SAM and saw Mach numbers that frightened him, and said the number was well above the 'limit'.

@SisuM62 It was a interceptor and was used in photo reconnaissance role as well. It flew recon flights over Israel and Iran. It was designed to intercept the USAF Valkyrie which ironically got cancelled. I was just making the point that the SR-71 wasn't to fast to catch or shoot down. it can be tracked and it can be seen coming so as long as you can get something up there it can be shot down.
@mystro1971 Fucking idiot. The SR71 was used as a reconnaissance aircraft, not as a fighter! And I dont think you would ever hear the engines of the SR71 as it flew at around 85000 feet! And no the X Men dont fucking have one.
This video inspired me to change my profile picture. I saw the SR many times when I lived in Okinawa and managed to photograph it one time at dusk with the afterburners on. By the way, a SR pilot told me one time that the only thing that could fly faster was the Space Shuttle.
In the states we may not make the best automobiles... though, I think it's safe to say that we make some of the best aircraft. The McLaren F1 of the air? If I do say so myself....
@zippythewonderslugoh Actually theres been a report a while back about how a bunch of communist heard of one coming and shot the luckiest missle ever and took it down
@zippythewonderslugoh Max speed of the SR-71 was Mach 3.3. Max Speed of the fastest Soviet interceptor the Mig-25 'Foxbat' was Mach 3.2. They both had similar ceilings of 80,000 feet plus. Lastly the air to air missiles the Mig-25 carried had a top speed of Mach 4.5.
@zippythewonderslugoh not true! some SAM can reach speeds over mach 4. Besides the fact that at that time it did not exist and it was not sposed to be in U.S.S.R. air space!!!

@ pipercub so the proof is in the pudding but as per usual we only get a scoop at a time. Another very interesting fact, about italian scientist Andrea Rossi and his E-Cat which he discloses has received a contract with an american company starting with an "N." The energy catalyzer or E-cat is for lack of a better term a cold fusion reactor. As we know in the 50's and 60's the USAF did test flights of "atom powered" nuclear bombers... But there were problems with radiation exposure. Cold fusi
@piperclub who cares if they were eliminated and dismantled. If you knew that there is new and improved air/spacecrafts in use and in production right now you wouldn't. How long after the Blackbird was designed and conceived did you know about it... SR-71B first flight in 64. introduced in 1966. Retired in 98. It would be foolish to retire a plane without the replacement at least in the works. Same goes for NASA's shuttle program. "flying bricks" are out of style. Not
@elkranch ..May thru Nov 2007 Marine Corps. Logist Base Barstow,CA the Defense Log. Ag. & A.F. Material Com. ordered the disposal of all existing materials associated with Senior Crown over 2 million pounds of related A-12 & SR-71 were demilled with ordered witnessed burial...the last NASA SR-71 went to the Air Zoo in Kalamazoo MI shipped by truck in 2003??what a waste to destroy all that Habu material,14 J58 engine 840+ tires etc...Peace
there is only ONE manned aircraft if you want to call it that that is faster than the BIRB and that is the space shuttle. If we believe everything the DD puts out about the BirB we are in a world of hurt. I will bet my retirement check she still is flying ou just don't hear about it, their have been some modifications to it to enhance speed and recon.Iwould put her up against any thing that flies from any country.
Keep thinking the SR-71 is through it does thing the Predaor can't do..and yes there is mach 5 drone and call it a gut feeling or maybe more but I think NK will be the first to find out I do agree thank you Kelly Johnson for designing such a bird. Oh would Russia back NK in a war. Not in my life time, China Maybe
Keep thinking the SR-71 is through it does thing the Predaor can't do..and yes there is mach 5 drone and call it a gut feeling or maybe more but I think NK will be the first to find out I do agree thank you Kelly Johnson for designing such a bird
3/19/70 I was just going off and we got a red ball. We hit the air in 2 f-4s as we hit mach 2 the bird pass us likw we were parked. Ground radar had picked up something( we were never told), but our orders we to bring it nout of the sky, I saw it on my screen but we could overtake it and niether could the bird and he was at full afterburn. Til I die I will always wonder what we were chasing. My sons it is the truth.
I would rather not see an invisiable nuke. They have said Oh the bird is retired, anyone want to make a bet on that. It still flies, but ask anyone in the defence depatment and they will lie like hell and say we have no use for it with out satalittes, I know withour going into details it fies. God I wish I could say the things that I know about the bird the way my luck runs the DD would be beating on my door I will say this Mach 3 is awalk it the park for the bird.
This puppy still rocks. Built in the late sixties and can still out strip mach 3 with a radar profile that would match today's B1 or B2 or the fighter F-117. This was the bird that propelled the USSR to develop an anti air missile to catch up to this plane. What a provocation to start a cold war! I mean I would be afraid.

Pretty damn cool for 1960s technology. Read the excellent book "Sled Driver" if you can find a copy (very rare). I've taken many photos of the 71 at the National Air and Space Museum at Dulles, Va. .
I can't remeber as it has been so long ago but we did have a Recon was similar to the Bird". and yes had and a couple of other countries have been trying to for years to construct a missle that will catch the bird, but at last count there just as bad as we are in finding enough money to design something that will even come close the catching it. So far advanced for it time. Know or have a real good idea how fast but we will leave that alone.
@sixnightsaweek I think you are referring to to the U2, It was a high flying snooper and at the time, or at its onset, The USSR had no missile that could reach it. Technology caught up to the U2 and Fancis Gary Powers was shot down.

Cold fusi

My dream come true, the black ops kids have ran to another game, and the comments are once again ruled by aviation enthusiasts!

@pipercub Being an aviation enthusiast I would assume you have heard of the scramjet engines, no?

@piperclub who cares if they were eliminated and dismantled. If you knew that there is new and improved air/spacecrafts in use and in production right now you wouldn't. How long after the Blackbird was designed and conceived did you know about it... SR-71B first flight in 64. introduced in 1966. Retired in 98. It would be foolish to retire a plane without the replacement at least in the works. Same goes for NASA's shuttle program. "flying bricks" are out of style. Not
to mention there is money

there is only ONE manned aircraft if you want to call it that that is faster than the BIRB and that is the space shuttle.

Any plane that shits its pants when sitting still, and sucks itself along happily at Mach 3 is awesome :D
