Lesley was the original and better because it was in an era when the words meant more ie sexual equality, Dusty is a better singer, Joan (and I am a life long fan) is great but on this one just seems to be going thru the motions.
This is for all women who have adapted themselves to or stifled their personalities for another person, like the "good girls" we were taught to be in my generation. Our mothers taught us to do it, magazine articles told us exactly how to do it, schools "educated" us to do it. Now we're setting ourselves free from all of that. This was the only Leslie Gore song I liked back then...a real departure for her, but Joan makes it so much better! Love you, Joan. You showed 'em! You're the best!
Leslie Gore was deep in the closet when she sang this in 1964, back then it was mandatory for us girls to wear skirts to school and marriage & babies was the only option. Seeing proud, strong, free2be LGBT Joan perform this was worth living for--onward sisters and brothers!

It must be woman's internalized woman hate. In the form of the perception that woman are only worth something in relation to men and are weak and inferior. The logical outcome for a hopelessly weak human is to rally on and align with the strong for survival. Other woman are competition and a reminder of their own weakness.

Leslie Gore was deep in the closet when she sang this in 1964, back then it was mandatory for us girls to wear skirts to school and marriage & babies was the only option. Seeing proud, strong, free2be LGBT Joan perform this was worth living for--onward sisters and brothers!

@cg6148 That's Joan Jett. Leslie Gore as a very different voice. Also, the music's been updated with a sax. It's got a slightly different rock beat to it. The original is more laid back, even in the more powerful parts.

@onlockinggeisha It's time for your female friend at work to get a backbone. I'm not saying it's her fault at all, but SHE should be the one to tell him off and get rid of him. It pains me to see younger women taking this from people (and I don't mean just men, but overwhelmingly men), especially people who should love them, in this day and age. No one was conditioned more extremely than I was to be inferior, but I broke out of it. She can, too. Was the feminist movement all for nothing?

I don't think it's her place to stand completely alone, but I don't really know whats between them. I don't like seeing that he may be abusive but they are really serous about being together forever. I said something because I've seen other woman in my life get their lives ruined by abusive or manipulating men. However, what she decides is her business. She's not a weak personality.

@onlockinggeisha Of course you don't like seeing anyone abused. I've seen it, too, and been through terrible abuse myself as a young girl by the men in my family. My point was that I've seen so many adult women instantly accept the role of child in a relationship and allow the men in their lives to control them. If she wants to be with someone who "has her on pins and needles," well, that happens if women accept it. You can't always be there, though of course, you want to help her. So would I.

@ladymesc1 Women shouldn't accept that but I think the abuse is so constant in a female's life it's normal to be treated like that. I knew a teen living with her parents she had really good family and friends who would help her with her baby and protect her. She had a restraining order against him. She wasn't trapped and had a choice. She chose him over everyone even her baby because he was abusive to it to. What makes woman accept such a life?Maybe s lot of woman may think they have no choice.

@onlockinggeisha That's it exactly: They think it's normal. My mother chose my father and brother over me, even though she knew they were abusing me every day. I haven't spoken to any of them in years and don't intend to. I had to stand up for myself all alone, but I did it. I don't let anyone into my life who disrespects me in any way. Some women do rebel and stop the cycle, and that's why I hate that so many women accept it and put their helpless children they should be protecting in danger.

@ladymesc1 People don't talk about it, but it's common. My mother chose a man over her kids and always seemed to have a hate for me that she didn't my brother. It must be woman's internalized woman hate. In the form of the perception that woman are only worth something in relation to men and are weak and inferior. The logical outcome for a hopelessly weak human is to rally on and align with the strong for survival. Other woman are competition and a reminder of their own weakness.

If everyone loved and respected herself/himself, the world would be a much better place. Of all the prejudices in this world, sexism is the most insidious because it's in our own homes and comes from our own parents and those who should love us. I'm sorry you felt that hatred from your mother. I know what a family's hate can do. But let's rock on! Music is life!

Your mom sounds narcissistic. 1% of the population suffer from NPD. Inverted narcissists support extraverted narcissist spouses, and child abuse is extremely common in these families. Usually the normal sibling(s) that did not inherit the NPD through genetics is perceived as weak by the rest of the family and abused for having normal feelings such as love or empathy. Not speaking to an abusive family is healthy, and so is forgiving sick parents (from afar, of course)

@riverlioness She was selfish, weak, and had very low self-esteem, for herself and for me. Ignored problems and blamed me for confronting them and leaving home. Made lame excuses for herself. How did she "sleep" through 3,000 rapes? I have no inclination to forgive anyone; too busy living my life, working on my art, and don't want to waste even that much energy on them. She didn't even want me to get help for the abuse or tell anyone about it because she didn't want it to reflect badly on HER.

@DaleSrRocked Glad you found happiness, but the lyrics of THIS song are "don't tell me I can't go with other boys." The song as written has nothing to do with lesbian relationships. As a songwriter myself, you always hope people will find their own inner meaning to lyrics (which you seem to have done) -- but, not by suggesting the lyrics should be changed to better accomodate one's interpretation. I hope that in another 10 years you still have the same happiness as you have today. Peace.

@woodsman513 No,I don't think ALL men are like that! But I've only met about 2 out of 35 that were even partially ok with me having male friends. My X husband literally wrote out a CAN NOT DO list for me. No male friends. No concerts w/o him. No nothing normal ppl enjoy. That was pure BS. So I'll never get roped into another dictative relationship again. Not worth it.
