I grew up watching this movie and living in central Victoria discovered most of the places Mad Max was filmed ,this scene is just out of Sunbury Vic and a lot of landmarks are still there today,if you take a DVD you can play it and pick out exact spots where they filmed,I'm a bit obsessed but a boy needs a hobby! besides my 78 Z1000.
Does anybody else notice the sound is different in the dvd version of this scene. Like many others I grew up with I'd memorised all the dialogue just from watching the movie 1000's of times. I distinctly remember him going "Careful my ankle! My foot man!" when Max drags him by the handcuffs as if that was the worst thing he had to worry about. I really hate it when little hollywood nerds sit in their offices and fuck with our national treasure.
fuck tom hardy, fuck remakes, fuck hollywood. all they make is garbage and they will utterly destroy this movie, i will never watch it. this is a classic movie, it cannot be remade.
I am 28 yrs old. I remeber watching this movie with my dad when I was a kid and then again when I was 17 we watched it together. This is the 5th time I watch this movie. And I feel so jelous of my dad generation they got really good movies and music when my kids ask me for a movie what I am going to give them Fast&Furios IUCK that's for pussys compared to Mad Max man is so hardcore.
Johnny wasn't there as the Toecutter gang killed Jessie and the baby. As for me Max is just a murderer just like the whole gang of the Toecutter gang was..
well what i dont understand same reason in saw you can cut the chain, the ankle, or and i dont know why they cant think of this but you could try and cut the metal the cuff is cuffed on. Looks pretty old and rusty to me, he might be able to go threw that and slip the cuff off and walk away.
@Gizmo2703 thats 3 leaf springs its cuffed to. hi-strength steel with a bit of surface rust.. it would take hours and a few saw blades to get thru that!
In the graphic novel, not the movie, Rorschach handcuffs a somebody who killed a child, tells him the saw will not cut through the handcuffs in time, then sets the house he is in on fire. Rorschach waits outside; leaves the house.

in retrospect the guy should have just cut throught the rusted out metal that the shiny un-sawable cuffs were attached to. Crazy guy wins! well maybe he couldn't cut through those leaf springs very fast....
OH MY GOD! Don't bring this on me, man! I mean..my ankle or the handcuff chain?!? You can't be serious! I mean what a choice!!! Help me! Which one?!? Even though I could take off my jacket and toss it over the lighter flame and put it out before the gas runs over and be waiting in ambush with a crowbar when you come back down here...but geezus not like this! You can't kill me like this!!!!
@MayaMoonside2:24...he could SEE it....he knew what was gonna happen...you can breath hard and snuff a lighter out...its not like it was a flaming torch ya know? :P Not saying I didn't like the movie...just mocking ol' Johnny Boy....
@freaker126 Because Max told him it would take too long to cut the chain. From the looks of it, he didn't even have enough time cut through his ankle before the car exploded.
"I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?"
Of the three movies, I always preferred this one just because of how fucked up it is. The first Mad Max in my opinion did not hold back on any level. As much as I love the Road Warrior, I don't really see how it's the superior sequel everyone claims it to be. That's one of the things that disappointed me about it. With all the hype, I expected it to be great which it was but I still felt it lacked something. The third film on the other hand is not the best but not the worst either.
@lotofhate Tom Hardy is an awesome choice for Max, and I'm glad George Miller is directing, but I'm still not sure if it's a remake, reboot, or just a sequel. I've heard conflicting reports, but I'm excited anyway! With Inception, Batman 3, and now Mad Max, Tom Hardy's career is exploding.
@lotofhate I actually wouldn't mind if they remade this movie. I like it alot the way it is and there are some things which are pure amazing like Mel's performance, the jaw dropping camera work in the action scenes, the delightfully crazy villains and this ending but I will be the first to admit it isn't perfect. For instance it could have had way more action if you ask me and the dialogue while fun is also kinda cheesy at times.
@HamishW96 That's so cool! I'm from the States, but I've always wanted to visit Australia and New Zealand to see the beautiful sites from all the movies filmed down there. I heard Mad Max 4 will be filmed at Broken Hill later this year.
I know its just a movie, but the way gangs are now I think it would be good for them to get a wake up call like this. Its good to see the police given a movie like this because they really are heroes.
The next Mad Max film won't be the same without Mel Gibson. Everytime the lead character in any film is re-cast it usually fails unless it's a reboot which part four will not be.

How wrong I was. Mad Max is off the charts. The Road Warrior (while a really good action movie) almost comes off kind of cartoonish in comparsion.
Without any doubt in my mind, the first Mad Max is the best one in the series. The most real, heavy, and moving by far.
I can remember that the yanks dubbed this great movie with American voice actorsts instead of the original Australian voices, because they probably couldn't understand them or don't like Australian accents...
Kinda stupid if you ask me, I can understand Australians and my native language isn't even English..... Yanks (sigh)
@mitrooper I'm American, and I can understand it just fine. I think it's more of a marketing thing than a communications thing. Unfortunately, people are more likely to see a domestic film than an imported one. Unfamiliarity can hurt sales.
@kungfooligan Actually it was because they couldn't understand it, it is revealed in this video interviewing the cast of Mad Max, the question in particular regarding to the dub starts at 8:10 of this video in quotations "watch?v=LMn7MX0ItnM&feature=related" The entire interview is interesting, but that section is relevant to the post. My opinion is the American version is rather comical and is stupid, the Aussie version is far superior.
@mitrooper I was a very young kid when I saw this movie, and I made the same observation. I remember asking "Daddy, why are they making the Aussies sound American when they speak the same language as us?" and my dad saying "Umm, I haven't the faintest clue"
@mitrooper= I prefer the Australian accent, and I'm American. I've watched alot of British and Australian entertainment, and I understand it just fine. I'm still working onAustralia though. I'll get it eventually.
''the chain in those handcuffs is high tensile steel, it'll take you ten minutes to hack through it with this, now if your lucky you can hack through your ankle in five minutes, Go.'' best qoute in the movie.
I wonder in the new upcoming Mad Max movie: Fury Road if Max returns back to the 'society' that he left behind at the end of the first movie? It would interesting if he did. I'm hoping that the fourth movie will be a cross between the first and the second movie.
@yethboth That's a good question. I'm just wondering if it will ever get made. I know they have a script and a cast and everything, but this isn't the first time they've tried to make Mad Max 4. Besides, the actor playing Max (Tom Hardy) will be pretty busy, since he's playing Bane in the next Batman movie. I hope they find time to make Fury Road! I'd love to see Mad Max ride again.
@kungfooligan the should get mel gibson to reprise the role. he's already mad, how hard coul it be to play the max bit. really though, he's a great fucking actor.
@yethboth The society that he left behind in the first film doesn't exist any more. There was nuclear war after the events of Mad Max 1, the effects of which are shown at the end of Mad Max 3 when we see that Sydney is totally destroyed. If the fourth film was to take place with any sort of normal society, it would have to be set between Mad Max 1 and Mad Max 2.
i watched this movie and still dont get what makes it so epic. i just know that its epic. maybe because it was one of the first movies to show a post-apocalyptic future. thats why i like it.
i watched this movie and still dont get what makes it so epic. i just know that its epic. maybe because it was one of the first movies to show a post-apocalyptic future. thats why i like it.
This first movie had such a strange, unsettling atmosphere-even more so when you watch the version with the dubbed American accents. It's also very claustrophobic-even though a lot of it is filmed in those great wide open spaces.
The background in the scene where Goose and Max have stopped a couple with a three wheeler and side car reminds me of a Van Gogh painting.
I remember reading that the original idea for beyond thunderdome was to have Johnny as the first contestant that Max fought against, he was to be like "oooh, I'm gonna get you for taking my foot" and then max is all like punch, punch, punch KO.
@BillyCauseyjr :0 whoa, really? Where'd you hear that? I heard that the first script for Road Warrior had Humungus turn out to be Goose, who was horribly burned. It's funny how they had all these ideas, but the movies ended up being barely connected.
@BillyCauseyjr no offense but beyond thunderdome was fucking shit it completely drifted of from the storyline ihn comparison froma the last two films be4 it and should of been set out like the first two aswell as the type of landscape
The first Mad Max was the only film that Mel Gibson ever looked hot in. After this he pretty much aged badly, and his skin's been looking baggy around his face for like decades now. What, was he 40 when he did this movie or something?
I always laugh when people call this the boring "least action filled" of the trilogy They obviously missed the whole point of what this was supposed to be. Thank god that enough people got the point and that I can be reassured that the world I live in is not as lowbrow-dumb as the modern studios would like us to be. Popcorn anyone?
The begging was interesting but it became a little too... boring. the pointless scenes about his family and the synopsis was act 1 and 2. act 3 was stupid.
Why did the wife go alone again after the incident? why didn't Max stay with his wife? Why aren't they even showing any signs of anxiety after the wife was being harassed by a gang?
The importance of the scene is that Max lost his humanity and became the same as the monsters he was fighting. Something he alluded to earlier in the movie when talking to his chief.
@ultimatenate Bingo. Mad Max is about a man trying to stay above the savagery of a chaotic world, and losing everything because of it. Mad Max 2 is about a man too embittered by his own loss to re-enter society. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome is when that man finally regains his humanity and redeems himself through a selfless act.
@ultimatenate You are wrong. Only humans hold grudges and seek revenge. Animals do not seek revenge. Revenge, wanting to revenge a wrong, is what makes us human. It is part of humanity.
@OptimisticCynic715 Yup. The hacksaw bit wasn't actually in the movie. Rorschach kills the guy with a meat cleaver instead. However, when Ozymandias is monitoring the world news from his headquarters, you can see Mad Max 2 playing on one of the screens :p
@kungfooligan Though I haven't read it myself, I've read on the net that the graphic novel actually does use the hacksaw angle, with the house set on fire (copyrights?!). Also, in the movie when the perp (Grice?) says "man", I think it sounds very similar to Johnny in the American dub version (this clip here is the original Aussie audio, isn't it?).
@OptimisticCynic715 Yeah, in the comic, Rorschach chains the guy to a radiator and sets the place on fire, giving him the option of sawing his hand off or burning. Pretty gnarly.
@Doublespazer But Johnny raped a girl earlier in the movie and set Goose on fire. And even so, he was still present when they murdered Jessie and Sprog, so that makes him an accomplice in my eyes. Now I'm not saying Max's actions are justified (murder never is), but his feelin

I wonder in the new upcoming Mad Max movie: Fury Road if Max returns back to the 'society' that he left behind at the end of the first movie? It would interesting if he did. I'm hoping that the fourth movie will be a cross between the first and the second movie.
yethboth 1 year ago
@yethboth That's a good question. I'm just wondering if it will ever get made. I know they have a script and a cast and everything, but this isn't the first time they've tried to make Mad Max 4. Besides, the actor playing Max (Tom Hardy) will be pretty busy, since he's playing Bane in the next Batman movie. I hope they find time to make Fury Road! I'd love to see Mad Max ride again.
kungfooligan 1 year ago
@kungfooligan the should get mel gibson to reprise the role. he's already mad, how hard coul it be to play the max bit. really though, he's a great fucking actor.
capitalcontested 11 months ago
@yethboth The society that he left behind in the first film doesn't exist any more. There was nuclear war after the events of Mad Max 1, the effects of which are shown at the end of Mad Max 3 when we see that Sydney is totally destroyed. If the fourth film was to take place with any sort of normal society, it would have to be set between Mad Max 1 and Mad Max 2.

MALCBAGGIE 1 year ago 3
I remember reading that the original idea for beyond thunderdome was to have Johnny as the first contestant that Max fought against, he was to be like "oooh, I'm gonna get you for taking my foot" and then max is all like punch, punch, punch KO.
BillyCauseyjr 1 year ago
@BillyCauseyjr :0 whoa, really? Where'd you hear that? I heard that the first script for Road Warrior had Humungus turn out to be Goose, who was horribly burned. It's funny how they had all these ideas, but the movies ended up being barely connected.
kungfooligan 1 year ago
@kungfooligan
But as I was a kid I always thought that Humungus realy is Goose...
SrlePopovic 1 year ago
@kungfooligan
I doubt that was ever really considered. I mean the Gyro Pilot and Max don't recognize each other, let alone a guy he tortured years prior.

Damn thats gangsta
greenbay357 1 year ago
Ok, I'm gonna say it.
I was disappointed by this movie.
Not enough action and story was pretty bull.
The movie started out good, ended bad

The importance of the scene is that Max lost his humanity and became the same as the monsters he was fighting. Something he alluded to earlier in the movie when talking to his chief.
ultimatenate 1 year ago 26
@ultimatenate Bingo. Mad Max is about a man trying to stay above the savagery of a chaotic world, and losing everything because of it. Mad Max 2 is about a man too embittered by his own loss to re-enter society. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome is when that man finally regains his humanity and redeems himself through a selfless act.
kungfooligan 1 year ago 11
@kungfooligan What society? It has all collapsed by then!
LordoftheKaty 1 year ago
@LordoftheKaty Maybe "humanity" would be a better word.
kungfooligan 1 year ago
@ultimatenate You are wrong. Only humans hold grudges and seek revenge. Animals do not seek revenge. Revenge, wanting to revenge a wrong, is what makes us human. It is part of humanity.

Inspired a scene from The Watchmen anyway 8P. Especially the actual comic I think.
OptimisticCynic715 1 year ago
@OptimisticCynic715 Yup. The hacksaw bit wasn't actually in the movie. Rorschach kills the guy with a meat cleaver instead. However, when Ozymandias is monitoring the world news from his headquarters, you can see Mad Max 2 playing on one of the screens :p
kungfooligan 1 year ago
@kungfooligan Though I haven't read it myself, I've read on the net that the graphic novel actually does use the hacksaw angle, with the house set on fire (copyrights?!). Also, in the movie when the perp (Grice?) says "man", I think it sounds very similar to Johnny in the American dub version (this clip here is the original Aussie audio, isn't it?).
OptimisticCynic715 1 year ago
@OptimisticCynic715 Yeah, in the comic, Rorschach chains the guy to a radiator and sets the place on fire, giving him the option of sawing his hand off or burning. Pretty gnarly.
kungfooligan 1 year ago
@kungfooligan Possible even inspired saw?
Jozsef86330 1 year ago
@OptimisticCynic715 Mad Max inspired Watchmen, not the other way around. It predates the comic by seven years.

Johnny did not deserved was Max did to him. OMG, Johnny was just a poor guy.
Doublespazer 1 year ago
@Doublespazer But Johnny raped a girl earlier in the movie and set Goose on fire. And even so, he was still present when they murdered Jessie and Sprog, so that makes him an accomplice in my eyes. Now I'm not saying Max's actions are justified (murder never is), but his feelin
