  • Nordic skiing! The same kind of skiing that killed those people is part of the required Physical Education curriculum in the school district in my hometown. It didn't kill me, but it sure tried.

  • Spoiler alert: in 2 years, you'll make channels called CrashCourse and SciShow to teach all youtube about things.

  • Pilot Crash Course episode?

  • Whenever I watch this video I think to myself "Oh Hank you are totally going to get pwned in the next video"

  • I like how most vlogbrother videos have at least 100,00 views, but this one only has 80,000.

  • @bbmonkey14 A lot of the older videos have less views. Especially 2009, for some reason.

  • @mthsbandrocks I was comparing it with the videos before and after, and pointing out that even though we claim to be nerds, lots of people didn't watch/re-watch this video. I just found it amusing...

  • Essentially the beginning of Crash Course!

  • "Bentleys in Berkeley"?

    doesn't happen.

    smart-cars in berkeley?

    all the time

  • What a fascinating look at the relationship between humanity and the environment! Thanks, Hank.

  • Austin Powers?

  • Hank, your hair looks good in this video.

I had much more to say than this, but it probably won't get read anyway, so that's all.

  • I know Hank doesn't mean anything by it, but the idea that degrees in liberal arts are less valuable than science/math degrees is not an under heard of concept.

A lot of the time, science/math degrees are put on a pedestal while other degrees are looked down upon as frivolous while they clearly are not. Society as we know it would not exist without arts. Writers who have created stories have inspired countless inventions.

Because both degrees are important, they should all be treated equally.

  • xc skiiing ftw!!!!!

  • I believe that this is the very first video I saw of the Vlogbrothers. Now I have seen all of them. Several times =).

  • Ah, Hank, the only person who can get me to listen to anything science-y. xD

I'm a Humanities kid, but you make me interested in learning more things about this thing we call "science" ^_^

  • fantastic! This reminds me of a video I was thinking about doing, after I double checked the facts, about the importance of forest fires to pine barrens. I love ecosystems and how they can fix what humanity accidentally/intentionally destroys!

  • You would make a FANTASTIC field instructor in the Oregon Outdoor School program!!!!! I would squeal like a little girl if you came to the camp where I'm a counselor XD

  • Can some awesome nerdfighter explain the billboard in the Great Gastby to me? I've read the book, but I've always assumed that the billboard was just a representation of the American commercialization overlooking the whole story.

  • @Claytagator Dr. TJ Eckleburg's eyes were a representation of God as viewed by Wilson. In his mind, Eckleburg's eyes were the eyes of God looking down upon the ash-filled city as a moral wasteland. The billboard had significance only because the characters viewed them with significance. DFTBA!

  • I love re-watching this video knowing that john totally school's him in the next :D

  • how can you enjoy skiing??? I have to do that for PE in winter...I hate skiing

    Best wishes!!! DFTBA

  • "Some fruffy bachelors arts degree that I don't even know what it's in..."

So nice to your brother Hank :')

  • Okay, this sounds weird, but I want to be your daughter. You'll be an awesome dad.

  • By the end of the video it sounded like he was wearing a retainer.

  • it's true....... new york has really good water!

  • started an Environmental Economics module at University this week. So far - amazing!!

Stuff from this video came up! Loving these lectures (so far..)

  • I learned about this in my AP Environmental Science class!

  • My college doesn't offer classes on ecology...poo.

  • It's unfortunate that the only way to get through to some people about the value of nature is through $. Each animal, plant, insect, and every living organism is important and every square foot of wilderness is priceless.

It's sad that most people never think about what other species think about how we're treating the planet...

  • What did Hank write his thesis for his masters on?

  • watching this video > studying for my test on the great gatsby tomorrow

  • ECOCITADEL MAGNUM ASTRON

YOUTUBE (DOT) C OM / MAGNUMASTRONPROJECT

  • A funny thing: My swedish college has the audacity to translate my three year degree in library science to english as Master of Science, so if that really is a title you long to have I recommend studying to be a librarian in Sweden. Good luck, and thanks for all the awsome videos!

  • So it occurs to me that this means the problem is actually individualism because we are often more interested in what we are personally earning and gaining rather than the community's benefit/costs. Ie often it is companies, their employees [sometimes] and their shareholders [often in a different location] who gain from misusing natural resources. Even if those people have to pay part of the cost in their taxes, for them personally that cost is still less. I think?

  • @sepiasunrise I'm sure it's more complex than this, but I've watched this video several times and this is the first time that this has occurred to me!

  • @Bimmjim your comment was not well said. And I wont watch your vids

  • Well said. Now see my vids.

  • So I was reading the Great Gatsby in class and came upon Dr. TJ Eckleberg and thought of this video.

  • All of the life on earth does useful stuff for humans?

What about the plasmodium that causes malaria? What about pin worms and liver flukes and all the other living organisms that cause disease?

I totally agree with you that ecosystems are severely undervalued by people though.

  • Oh that Dr. T.J. Eckleburg (sp?)... always being god and stuff.

  • wait wait wait. I heard that the tap water in NY wasn't kosher because there are microorganisms reminicent of shellfish living in it.

  • The odd twist to this is that I know that if we reintroduce the microorganisms that were prevalent before we started "tilling the soil" we would find that MotherNature does take care of itself. Dr. Higa from Okinawa realized this when he found that the main instigators of harmony in the environment was a combination of three basic microorganisms, Yeast, Lactic Acid bacteria and Phototrophic bacteria, oddly the first two helped animals evolve and the third helped the plants

  • this is great!

  • Blurreh.

  • Vlog brothers should reliese DVD's,

    one year = One season

  • @Medafets or one season = one season

  • @Medafets but see, that defeats the point! The point is to be part of the You Tube community, talking to other nerds

  • @Medafets that would be the most amazing thing ever!!

  • @Medafets it's release, not reliese.

But i agree with the idea(:

  • @Medafets

That would be so much easier than me literally just going through every episode they made and watching it in order!

    I really want that!

Yes I am serious, I've been a nerd fighter for a while and I'm at this episode after watching it from the beginning (and re-watching all the eps I arbitrarily watched when I joined the first time around), so after watching 3 years of them in the last few days, I'd love to have made it easier. lol

  • @Medafets But then there would be no comments!!?!?

  • @Medafets or just call it, Year One. Year Two. and so on.

  • @Medafets I wish I could like your comment more than once

  • @Medafets I would buy that.

  • Interesting!

  • "I'm just lookin' at stuff.' [:

  • yes!

  • dude, slow down

  • I don't think I've ever seen anyone with frozen lips before. Numbed by the dentist? Yes, many times that; myself included with the aid of a mirror. But not frozen by temperature. :D

  • loved the vid, but im going skiing next week and each time you mentioned how ppl died while skiing, i got that much more scared to go on vacation

  • great information and you look really good in the outdoors hank :)

  • I really liked this. I knew that the earth had its own natural filtration but i didnt know that a price was put onto it. if more people knew how much money we are saveing i think they would take "going green" more seriously.

  • I remember covering this stuff in first year uni, and it was a lot more complicated than you just made it sound. It's definitely really interesting. As a fellow scientist I think you should talk about science more on this channel :)

  • jacket and earmuffs sir! You only get one pair of ears!

  • Haaaank, your gloves have a hanging thread =O

  • OCD!! or CDO, how I look at it. At least I'm not the only one...

  • haha thanks i did a speech on this English and it was good thank you for the video =)

  • @Judge Steelflax

"this guy looks like a complete fag," huh?Thank you so much for that illuminating and valuable remark.

You have to stare at Hank's face every day? You poor thing. I'm sorry your life is so hard.

I suggest you go get a life. Meanwhile, I will be enjoying the humor and intelligence that Hank and John have to offer. It's obviously lost on you.

  • haha i know and my point still stands that no one is actually forcing him to watch.

  • 2:11 - would HAVE, Hank.

  • Would've...?

  • You need glasses that better fit your face.

  • hey everyone my second video is up if u want check it out that will be great and thanks if you do watch and make a comment

  • no ones forcing you to watch it are they ?

  • Is there a post-it note on that tree in 1:18? 0.0

  • @jocelynolea

it was probably a tree marker

  • Its not a post it note... LOL, Its a trail marker.

  • I'm really glad you don't have facial hair....because I just feel like you will look really odd with it on your facial regions....yeah

  • i'm on the cross country ski team at my school. love it

  • oh i bet it is. I live in Texas so my school don't have anything like that lol.

  • Hank I just got back from sking in flaine this was the first video I watched as soon as I got wi fi

  • I <3 learning!! ~O-O~

  • im doing my notes on the Great Gatsby while watching this - so i was right, the eyes were meant to be god. YAY

  • There's this quote in A Seperate Peace that describes you right now (you see the beauty of literature)

"It's part of the whole wrong idea they're ruining skiing in this country ( by going down hill as opposed to cross country)[...] You never get to see the trees, Oh you the the trees shoot by, but you never get to really look at the trees, at a tree, I just like to go along and see what I'm passing and enjoy myself."

    there you have it!

  • Aww, you look so cold near the end. I don't think you have ever been that white ever before.

  • i ROFLED cuz i turned in my second rough draft of my Great Gatsby essay today xDDDD

  • Hey nerdfighters, i just starting making videos and i'd love some feedback!

  • Yay, teacher Hank. I like science but since I'm an artsy person (I have a prufrey bachelor of arts degree - in english :P) it took me a sec to understand but I think I got it now.

  • Wow. I didn't get any of that.

  • Great video, 5 stars for teaching and for not getting hurt while skiing, walking, talking and fliming at the same time.

  • i like that the beatles' "i am the wulrus" is a related video to this. justsayin.

  • ♥

  • I enjoy the drunkenness effect that the increasingly numb lips contribute.

  • The housing developer makes millions off developing a previously thriving wetland. The cost of replacing these ecoservices (which is likely 10 times the profit the developer made) is shared by everyone in the area via their taxes when the gov't is forced to construct some new, advanced infrastructure. The developer would have to be a selfless, extremely smart and unmaterialistic person to just give up the land or, even better, to protect it. Which they rarely are (see:current state of the US)

  • I like the tying in of the superficially unrelated areas of study of ecology and economics. You seem to imply that there is an obvious solution to the problem of ecosystem destruction by stating that they are "worth" more than us (by virtue of the dollars they save us by existing).

What you miss is that there is another factor which mucks this simple solution up like it mucks everything else up: greed. contd

  • this was really cool

  • that was hella fascinating. i love learning new stuff like that!

  • Wow, Hank, awesome and interesting points!! I had never thought about any of that before. Thanks for teaching me something. :)

  • fruffy isn't a word.

  • Sure it is.

  • want a cookie?

  • YAY science! Yay arts!! YAY LIFE!! YAY NERDS!

  • yayy!!! i love ecosystem services! go wetlands and carbon sinks!!!!

  • Fascinating! I like this teaching idea a lot. This aught to continue more long term then just this week.

Thank you Hank! I am happy that I learned something awesome today. =)

  • Skiing, teaching and taping... That's odd. Men aren't supposed to have the ability to multitask.

  • XP lol

  • @rattlesnakesister The vlogbrothers are not men you see they are awesome therefore as everything in there body is made of awesome they have is rare ablility to multi task .... i beleive other nerdfights boys can do the same...

  • you are skiing. and teaching and taping. incredible.

  • Hank, I love it when you teach me something new.

  • That is facinating, I love these informative videos. I can't wait to watch John's teaching video.

  • he sounds drunk lol

  • i watched this twice because you talk fast. It must be genetic.

  • brilliant!

..despite the fact that the cold makes you sound like a slurring drunk.. lolz

    :-)

  • 1:18 there's a blue sticky note on a tree... what might it say ?

  • @ TruMMELI i think its a trail, like you follow the trees with the blue stickies, if you see an orange sticky your on the wrong trail :)

  • @TRueMMELI Good eyes!

  • 'All of the life on earth does useful stuff for people'

An entire field of scientific study devoted to figuring the monetary value of the global ecosystem as it affects man. Not as it affects, oh, I don't know, the planet as a whole, but only as it affects mankind. Because there is no value to the Catskill watershed affecting any other living thing, only the water quality in New York city has value. Thank you for describing how we have turned the entire earths ecosystem into a marketing tool.

  • I read about this briefly in that book the Omnivore's Dilemma or was that Deep Economy....yea....maybe I shouldn't have had sake w/ my early lunch....I need a nap, nice video anywho

  • Hank, as educational as this was, the constant motion of the camera is making me kind of ill.

  • awesome

  • I half knew this. But I had no Idea you chould put a price on the services the ecosystem does. Very informative.

  • My attention got off(?) focus because i was trying to focus upon the unsteady background and realised Hank was talking about ecosomething.

  • I always learn more watching your videos than I ever did in 12 years of public school. Amazing.

  • What stavi said XD

  • you have a string thingy hanging from your glove

  • @bodaiden

That is a ski trail marker. It is really odd to see one in summer and realize that if it was winter you'd be under 5 ft of snow.

  • The post-it note like thingy is probably a trail marker.

    Also, YAY

  • Thats why we have such good bagels, good water in nyc.

  • @lovexxnikkirae and the best pizza is in the NYC metro area too! that's why I'm reppin' iiit

  • This really is fascinating...and I fail at science!

  • esoteric was a vocab word on my english final today :]

  • wait a midnute

pause at 1:19....is that a postit note taped to that tree?

  • @bodaidan I thin kso, that's weeiiiird

  • pause a 50 sec

  • This was such a wonderful and interesting video, thank you so much =]

  • you should know that this was more interesting JUST because your lips were numb and you were talking kind of funny :)

    xoK

  • dang! that really looks like MT!!! thats soo weird! im not used to seeing pics of MT on videos.

ha my sis just read the great gatspy

  • I love the teaching!!!! KEep it up!

  • Would you just TRIM THAT GLOVE THREAD?!

  • HAHA!! I was thinking the exact same thing :)

  • this was super interesting, hank. great video!

  • I'm baffled by the oft professed conflict between ecology and economy. Just two letters distant, and yet said to be so far apart.

  • =D .

  • ur awsome. DFTBA

  • I was replying to a question. I lived along the Bruce Trail in Ontario for most of my life, so I've followed many a marker in my time.

I miss nature. Toronto is full of pavement.

  • *Sigh* you are SO right.

  • awesome concept. thanks hank

  • totally to do with what im doing at a level. thanks !!

  • Great video and great theme this week! :)

I think it's such a good theme that it could be a repeat for later in the year even.

    Cross Country Skiing FTW!

Thanks for the lesson Hank! :) DFTBA

  • You ROCK. Brilliant video. Must be spread as far as nerdfighterly possible!!

  • Comment removed

  • im impressed you knew that reference in the great gatsby.

    to a degree...

    still impressed

  • Sorry John, but this is why Hank is my favorite brother. And he sings. And plays guitar. And is the younger brother (like I am).

Also: we really DO undervalue nature in almost every possible way. There is no good reason to not be as green as possible, and every good reason TO be.

  • I feel smarter all ready! THANK YOU! (Seriously, I miss science, and some how my schedule won't let me take science until next year. AGH!)

Can someone explain how something can be both new, and improved? If it's new, then is has not been improved. And if it's improved, it really isn't new.

  • @Mahlyenki0Dyavol It's new because it's been improved.

  • AAHHHh only the vlogbrothers can be fun and inventive and informative and exciting and handsome all at the same time!

  • Hank, you are awesome! I watched this video before I went to my econ class and surprisingly we talked about ecosystem services in class and I was the only one who knew what it was! So, you are awesome for teaching. Thank you very much!

  • I LOVE XC SKIING
