To respond to enoebone... what would is do that Smart bus doesnt? 1.) Provide an additional mass transit option, like any well-planned city does, which leads to 2.) people feel that Detroit is more transit and walking friendly, and 3.) It WILL "connect" to freeways, by way of stations. There will be a stop near I-94, before the New Center terminus. They would just need to build a parking structure, and then just imagine how easy it'd be to park and ride to a concert or game.
What does this thing do that the Smart bus doesn't? If it's not above (L train) or below (subway) ground surface it still has to stop for red lights so what's the purpose? I love Detroit but this is part of the problem- the fact that we waste a lot of resources doing things wrong instead of doing things right from jump. Something like this would be good if it was on the freeway & people got on on the overpass walkways.
Hopefully Woodward is just he beginning. Then they could expand to Gratiot, Michigan Ave. Grand River and all of the Mile Rds. Detroit's layout is perfect for a mass transit system.
Totally agree... I think they ought to focus on connecting Downtown to New Center first, and then Downtown to Eastern Market (with a Gratiot line), then a Jefferson line to the Belle Isle area, at least. Then, create some "intersecting" lines on, say, MLK/Mack and Warren, as well as making a longer Fort/Jefferson line. They ought to expand to Wayne County suburbs before Oakland county, since it seems Oakland County has nothing but contempt for Detroit. Let 'em drive, I say...
Its shame that Detroit had a great system and took it apart...But we can't think about the past,In order for this city to become a functional metropolitan area a system like this is a must!!!
If the light rail ever will be built, guess what it means? Density!!!!!!!! Streetcar and light rail usually causes a lot of construction boom around or nearby stations.
It costs billions of dollars to build an elevated system or a subway system. Light rail on the ground is way less expsensive and more easily accesible.
Mass transit is a necessity in Detroit. However, it would be better for it to be depressed or elevated - elevated light rail or a heavy rail subway. Woodward, being one of the most important thoroughfares in the city, would have additional traffic congestion and aesthetic concerns.

I worry about building transit piecemeal like this. Baltimore tried it and they have about 4 different systems hodge-podged together.
DC built one consistent system over 30 years and have a world-class subway system now.
Just something to consider. If you're going to only do one line now, at least have a plan for the next phase that is consistent with the first.
Good job!

Why don't they expand that worthless people-mover, rather than building a whole new system?
MZBKA1 3 years ago
Because the people mover technology is far more expensive and much more ugly looking than light rail.
