I'm a long time bass player, and I just wanted to give you a few tips.
First off, you've got the intro down, but don't use your thumb, you're playing it like a guitar, and if you want a really bassy sound, play with the EQ on your amp, and bass.
Also you can alter the sound by moving your hand towards neck while you play.
the original song is actually played with a pick but if you want to play with your fingers then play around with the settings on your amp until you get the same tone as when you use a pick.
you ought to slap yourself. nikki sixx uses picks & look at his perfect complimentary bass. it doesn't matter if you use picks or not. its however you are most comfortable playing. you TOOL

dont use a plectrum or your thumb, use your 2 fingers!

same here! when i use my fingers the sound isn't as loud as with the pick.
