i don't have a smartphone! so it makes no difference to me! besides even if i did find a FRIEND's kid's pic on facebook, i don't go snooping as to where they live, or where they go to school or where in the park they hang out most of the time! I HAVE A LIFE!!!! that's just STUPID for anybody to waste their time hacking and stalking children! GET A JOB U LOSERS!!!!
Good to know. I personally do not like the fact that all can see where I am and definitely do not want pics leaked out all over internet. World is to full of crazies for whereabouts to be known 24/7.
News reports like this fail to help protect our children from their predators. Research has repetitively and constantly shown us that the most likely individuals to harm our children are people who already have daily contact with them and know their whereabouts (ie 80% of violent crimes towards children are perpetrated by family members of acquaintances
FEAR FEAR FEAR...BE AFRAID, YOU ARE NOT SAFE, DONT TAKE PICS, DONT BUY ANYTHING, DONT GO OUTSIDE YOUR HOME, STAY INSIDE, DRAW THE CURTAINS, FEAR FOR YOUR SAFETY! you people are F*#king stupid letting fear run your life and your country. Here is an old saying....sh*t happens. What happened to we do our best no matter what the situation? We are American, grow some balls and shed the mantle of fear. sh*t will happen, being scared doesnt stop the bad sh*t from happening. it just makes you weak.
I think also, if someone is trying to kidnap a child, all they have to do is be at school release time. Stand on the corner and observe where the children go. This is called stalking. They wait and find the right time to strike. You may not even know you are being followed if they are very savvy. I'm just saying we have to be cautious all the time. Sorry to burst your bubbles but abductions have taken place too many times prior to the Iphone, Ipad, invention.
I do not use a smart phone and this is one reason why. The more dependent we get on technology, the more we lose our independence on our own abilities. Just because you can, doesn't mean you SHOULD. This is something this nation has forgotten and we will pay for it in time.
@Tarafriend33 Thats right, live in fear. Dont go buy the new phone. It's so scary. YOU ARE PATHETIC. JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE TO STUPID TO CORRECTLY USE THE TECH. WHAT YOU WANT US TO GO BACK TO EVERYTHING ON PAPER? DONT LIKE OUR NATIONAL FORESTS MUCH DO YOU? JUST KEEP BEING A PATHETIC SCARED LITTLE LOSER. GET LEFT BEHIND THE REST OF THE WORLD. Explain to me what "abilities" we lose. I havnt lost any "abilities", but i did gain a wider knowlage of the rest of the world thanks to the tech you hate.
The question is, do creeps have any motivation to do this? And who are the creeps that would actually try to use this technology? Most likely someone familiar or semi-familiar with a child, an ex, a business deal, a 'bully', a very nervous and obsessive voyeur. I think the reporting is very scary here---and we should use our common sense. Someone you know or once knew is more likely to utilize this technology more than a random creep.
If you are using an iPhone, here is the fix!! look under the 'Settings - Location Services'. It's there that you have the option to turn off the location tagging for the camera and photos.
The news are fear based, but still good info. Just turn off location for the camera, facebook, etc. Yet, you can still be found...and it's not your government agency! just ask at your grocery store or local target and they know everything about you... there is no hiding place!
gimme that New Time FEAR. all the better to allow the guv'mit to herd the sheep and keep 'em all in line....this here's just another good reason why we out to go attack somebody else in the middle east.
Now, lets not get histerical. what has not been clearly established in this video is this: were all the places visited by the phone owner, tracked by just the first photo takes...or each place photographed? The good from this video is the educating of the TOOL one may learn to use on his camera phone which shut down the overt geographic exposures. for that...thank you.
More fear based news....USA, home of fear! Fear is powerful. Where does this agenda come from? Hide under the bed. Do nothing. Fear, fear, fear. Wait, there is a guy looking at you right now looking at this. Go hide!
For anyone using facebook, you don't need to worry about those photos as the geotags are stripped on upload. I think this video is more about fearmongering than an actual threat.
On Android, I guess one would just load the camera app and click on the {O} symbol and switch Location: {O} On {X} Off. I did that as soon as I got my phone.
@nwtapp that was my first thought too, but if we are figuring it out now, im sure others are too and i wanna know first! absolutely terrifying. knowledge is the power that can protect us. better than letting us all be unwittingly vulnerable. the geo tagging has always given me the creeps...
LOL this shouldn't a suprise....Sure you teach the pervs a new trick but at the same time you are creating awareness, Kids think the Internet is safe and that is so far from the truth. But if I had to wiegh in, I think adding pervs to the equation is just an added variable as our governments are no better, they are the ones that started the concept of stalking and have been doing so for years. Just another monkey to throw on our backs.
Simple fear-mogering at it's best. I highly doubt they were able to track the photo back to the child's bedroom simply using the GPS geo-tag, or do they have access to military spec equipment? The real story here should be how most people have fully publicly available profiles on Facebook, Flickr, etc. Maybe if people were less narcissistic and only shared the information they post with people they actually know, this wouldn't be an issue, would it? Geo-tagging of photos isn't the problem.
This is insane!! Nothing in this god for saken country is safe anymore. Lock these weirdos up and throw away the key. May I add, that it may be great to let everyone know this but at the same time u just opened the door for more weirdos!! Thumbs up!! Smfh!!

`The more pictures we take, the expose we are' un quote. It really shows that the human race has become their own prisoners. Technology has taken it real freedom away.
@schratboy We don't actually know that the locations used were not staged. THAT is what I would do for such an experiment. It also seems likely that a news station would consult with law enforcement and legal counsel before undertaking such a project. These are not your typical YouTube rubes, I'd guess.
This story is exactly the kind of alarmist, sensationalist BS that gives the media, especially local news, such a bad name. This info isn't new, and these "journalists" (to use that term loosely) are obviously reaching so hard to make a story out of something that's completely mundane. This demagoguery is the type of fear-mongering that allows the FBI, DHS, and TSA to slowly and deliberately chip away at our civil liberties little-by-little, in the name of "keeping us safe". It makes me sick.
@zachnyhus Why do you think that this is "sensaionalist BS" but your statement that "...the FBI, DHS, and TSA to slowly deliberately chip away at our civil liberties..." is not sensationalist BS? There are plenty of flag-wavers who would think YOU are the fear-mongering sensationalist claiming impending civil-rights violations..
They are BOTH threats and anything that raises awareness of our loss of privacy and security is arguably a good thing, be it from individuals or government.
Because having our civil liberties taken away is something that actually MATTERS, unlike the outside chance that someone might know where a photo was taken because you were simply too lazy or stupid to look at your phone's settings. There is a HUGE difference between these issues you're conflating, and the people out there who aren't worried about their individual freedoms and civil liberties don't deserve to have them...
@zachnyhus I agree that civil liberties matter -and gummint is a real threat to that- i.e. the 30,000 drones they want to deploy now but having your kid snatched matters to some people and that happens too. We have already seen a number of cases of lunatics using phones to track victims so this is not some insignificant hypothetical.
The fact that there even exist websites like the ones shown evince that they are accommodating wierdo voyeurs out there.
I'll totally agree that that website is creepy. But anyone too stupid or lazy to manage the basic settings on their phone obviously cannot be trusted to handle the responsibility that comes along with owning a high tech device. They probably shouldn't be on the internet, either, and they DEFINITELY shouldn't be posting pictures of their kids if they're so damn worried about security yet too stupid to take the most ELEMENTARY and BASIC precautions (such as turning off geotagging).
@zachnyhus You have been brainwashed to believe you have the power to turn off any survelliance options moron.. hahahaha. NWO is here bitch. What are you going to do about it? cry to your mommie again??hahahaha
@zachnyhus Civil liberties do not depend (fortunately) upon your discretion of who deserves them. A child does not understand the concept, nor the mentally incapacitated, nor those in a coma, nor are they obtained by paying taxes but all still deserve human rights. I think you are the on who misunderstands civil liberties just like those you fear.
@maxfirepower Ok, you're obviously getting desperate based on far out you're reaching. Do you honesty think I was referring to kids and sub-mentals in my last statement? I was alluding to the famous Ben Franklin quote: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." Don't be a jackass...
@maxfirepower I'm talking about the morons who don't bother to lock down their Facebook pages, then rant and rave and freak out about people being able to see their photos. This people are cretins who should not be allowed to touch computers, for their own safety.
@zachnyhus Well, I don't understand your ire at a news program to educate these "morons". Why object to some program to demonstrate the hazards to the public??
Everyone was not so richly endowed at birth with knowedge of computers and communications media as you.
This is why I carry a concealed weapon. Come into my house uninvited and you will leave in a body bag. Mess with my family...you will end up in a river.
you realize you just told bad guys throughout the country how to do this. You may guys may have just single-handedly created 100's or maybe thousands of more crimes.
@nwtapp Same thing I was thinking! We (this stupid country) are our own worst enemy! We do the same sh!t with our military secrets, new weapons we've been testing and where we are testing them... Nothing like giving "heads up" to the bad guys!
For those of you who think turning a smart phone anything off (GPS, etc) you are totally wrong in thinking you are safe. Smart phones have Carrier IQ. If is a professional spyware that not only knows where you are (by internal phone monitoring) but it also monitors who you call, when you call, and all your texts, internet searches etc. RESEARCH Carrier IQ and Smart phones, then demand your money back.
You will be a lot less scared when you realize how many people don't care about you or where you are or what you're doing. Typical fear mongering media report.
@lenlangevin Yeah, you'll really be saying that when they find your child or someone else that you love murdered, and lying in a ditch somewhere because of a smartphone!
@mysticdragon75 If you know anything about violent crime, the vast majority of victims are known by the perpetrator - usually a friend, relative, spouse or ex spouse who already has all the information they need without a smartphone.
@lenlangevin What does that have to do with anything? They already proved that this can happen! You wanna bury your head in the sand and say that this will never happen to me, be my guest. But you will have nobody to blame but yourself if it does!
@mysticdragon75 If you want to live you life in paranoia, then go ahead. Just because someone can do it, it doesn't mean it will happen. I'll say it again. Most victims of violent crime are known by their attackers. The attackers don't need any technology to find their targets. They already know who they are.
@lenlangevin Being cautious and safe is NOT living my life in paranoia! Would you walk out into the street and tell people you ave $1,000 in your pocket? NO! Allowing a pedophile to find out where your child is located amounts to the same thing! It is inviting bad things to happen! If you have children than I pity them.
@mysticdragon75 Nowhere did I say anything against taking common sense precautions. I'm talking about the odds. The odds of my kid being cyberstalked or stalked in real life by a complete stranger using GPS information is infinitely smaller than being attacked by someone she knows.
Is it possible for you to get hit my a meteorite as you walk down the street? Yes. Do you wear a helmet to protect yourself from that? I certainly don't.
@lenlangevin mysticdragon75 pretty much covered what I was going to say. It would be good if gps was enabled between parents and children and so that the police can help track lost or kidnapped children! Too many damn pedo/stalkers out there! Human trafficking also is a real risk! You must be missing the news these days!
I think it would be a good idea if this information about "erasers" was propagated as much as the dangers of GPS data were. If the people who produced this clip won't do it, how about telling us how to erase GPS data?? This would be as important as being aware of this terrible feature that is being allowed - GPS data. How irresponsible can the corporate plutocrats get who sell these dangerous devices ??
hmmmmmmmm that is preciously why we have lost so many of our rights and losing the rest of them is cause people like Subxaero024 don't care and the government is taking over and we have no more privacy rights...Our 4 fathers would be appalled at what this country is coming to. We are going back to what we left behind, and most of the public is laying down and letting it happen and keeping their heads in the sand.
why have we let companies to expose us for just using a simple cell service -- there is too much data attached and is being given out -- and lets face it -- its all for data mining to make more money for the carrier --- this is such BS ---
its kinda cool, but its a good lesson that you should read the manual to your smartphone. but seriously? They act like stalkers are in groups just waiting to get your kids or something. Why must news constantly put people in fear? this poor idiot sleeps with a gun under his pillow for goodness sake xD
Well, I for one don't care, i have two German Shepards, and a whole arsenal of weapons, a person would be stupid to break in. I will shoot first ask questions later. I go to sleep with a pistol under my pillow, Uncle Sam taught me to shoot and shoot well. So my message to any and all would-be pedophiles and burglars, Make sure you bring ID so your next of kin can be notified.
Im more worried about this news video which is basically telling the "bad guys", exactly how to do this when 99% of them probably had no clue they could do this kind of thing. think about it. this video is probably reaching 10 "bad guys" to every parent or victim that it helps.
Just one more thing that isn't that much to worry about. So someone has a picture of the kid and knows where (s)he went to the park, or there bedroom is. I'm sorry but that just doesn't turn into more crime or an attempt on the child. As if someone is going to travel across the country because they saw a geotagged photo on the internet. I take thousands of photos a year and geotag them on purpose so I can remember where they are taken.
There's no need to insult people who weren't aware of how the tracking services work on phones. Some of us are not techno geeks. I for one am grateful for the information no matter how late to the party I may have been.
I thought this became public knowledge when Anthony Weiner tried to deny those naked pics he posted were him, and they found in the embedded photo info the location of the pics were his home. Hahaha what a dumbass!
Honestly, how dangerous is this? I guess you can have some psychos track someone's location, but wouldn't it be easier for them to stalk someone in their own area? Doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me.
This is what happens when you give technology to those who shouldn't be using it. People have gotten too lazy, to read and understand what they are doing. It's all about money these days, the fast you can put something online the more it will sale... People need to take the time to READ and study the security settings on everything from their phones to social sites.. It's a matter of being lazy on the user part....
geotagging on pictures is wonderful, with it you can find the precise location as to where you were when the photo was taken. Sometimes many years down the road this is great. To many this is an important feature.Of COURSE you should remove that information before sharing on-line with any photos. That is SMART COMMON SENSE. but SERIOUSLY legislation are you kidding me. PEOPLE PEOPLE, DON"T BE SUCH MORONS you have smart devices USE them smartly. KNOW your device PEACE
Wow! Thanks for giving step by step instructions to every moron out there that didn't already know this! Sometimes News Reports are your enemy, not your "friend".
I'm more disturbed by the fact that this mom just spent more time with her kid for a news segment than she normally spends with her, in real life, on a weekly basis. Also, most of the time, molesters are people that you know, and that your kid knows.
"Internet crime experts" do know that EXIF data may contain GPS/cell phone tower geolocation metadata. The law enforcement officer they interviewed is clueless and yet they decided to include him in the piece because it adds to the fear mongering. If he didn't know about location information within EXIF data, why are you asking him about today's "online risks"?
Why don't the phone manufacturers just build in that turnoff feature? Why have it an option anyway? Their phones solve problems, but they also create unintended problems. Congress should pass a law requiring gadget manufacturers to eliminate such unintended consequences. Why should they saddle the phone purchaser to turn off the feature? That feature is not a feature; it is a detriment instead.
this is why, if you care about your kid or whatever your photographing, you should TURN OFF your gps AND turn off the camera's link to your gps. I have a smartphone and you cannot find my location because I am cautious.
i don't have a smartphone! so it makes no difference to me! besides even if i did find a FRIEND's kid's pic on facebook, i don't go snooping as to where they live, or where they go to school or where in the park they hang out most of the time! "legitimately terrifying" no shit you idiots
lentase 2 weeks ago
This story is exactly the kind of alarmist, sensationalist BS that gives the media, especially local news, such a bad name. This info isn't new, and these "journalists" (to use that term loosely) are obviously reaching so hard to make a story out of something that's completely mundane. This demagoguery is the type of fear-mongering that allows the FBI, DHS, and TSA to slowly and deliberately chip away at our civil liberties little-by-little, in the name of "keeping us safe". It makes me sick.
zachnyhus 2 weeks ago
@zachnyhus Why do you think that this is "sensaionalist BS" but your statement that "...the FBI, DHS, and TSA to slowly deliberately chip away at our civil liberties..." is not sensationalist BS? There are plenty of flag-wavers who would think YOU are the fear-mongering sensationalist claiming impending civil-rights violations..
They are BOTH threats and anything that raises awareness of our loss of privacy and security is arguably a good thing, be it from individuals or government.
maxfirepower 2 weeks ago
@maxfirepower
Because having our civil liberties taken away is something that actually MATTERS, unlike the outside chance that someone might know where a photo was taken because you were simply too lazy or stupid to look at your phone's settings. There is a HUGE difference between these issues you're conflating, and the people out there who aren't worried about their individual freedoms and civil liberties don't deserve to have them...
zachnyhus 2 weeks ago
@zachnyhus I agree that civil liberties matter -and gummint is a real threat to that- i.e. the 30,000 drones they want to deploy now but having your kid snatched matters to some people and that happens too. We have already seen a number of cases of lunatics using phones to track victims so this is not some insignificant hypothetical.
The fact that there even exist websites like the ones shown evince that they are accommodating wierdo voyeurs out there.
maxfirepower 2 weeks ago
@maxfirepower
I'll totally agree that that website is creepy. But anyone too stupid or lazy to manage the basic settings on their phone obviously cannot be trusted to handle the responsibility that comes along with owning a high tech device. They probably shouldn't be on the internet, either, and they DEFINITELY shouldn't be posting pictures of their kids if they're so damn worried about security yet too stupid to take the most ELEMENTARY and BASIC precautions (such as turning off geotagging).
zachnyhus 2 weeks ago
@zachnyhus You have been brainwashed to believe you have the power to turn off any survelliance options moron.. hahahaha. NWO is here bitch. What are you going to do about it? cry to your mommie again??hahahaha
drummerbadass1 2 weeks ago
@zachnyhus Civil liberties do not depend (fortunately) upon your discretion of who deserves them. A child does not understand the concept, nor the mentally incapacitated, nor those in a coma, nor are they obtained by paying taxes but all still deserve human rights. I think you are the on who misunderstands civil liberties just like those you fear.
maxfirepower 2 weeks ago
@maxfirepower Ok, you're obviously getting desperate based on far out you're reaching. Do you honesty think I was referring to kids and sub-mentals in my last statement? I was alluding to the famous Ben Franklin quote: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." Don't be a jackass...

@maxfirepower I'm talking about the morons who don't bother to lock down their Facebook pages, then rant and rave and freak out about people being able to see their photos. This people are cretins who should not be allowed to touch computers, for their own safety.

phillepin0 2 weeks ago
For those of you who think turning a smart phone anything off (GPS, etc) you are totally wrong in thinking you are safe. Smart phones have Carrier IQ. If is a professional spyware that not only knows where you are (by internal phone monitoring) but it also monitors who you call, when you call, and all your texts, internet searches etc. RESEARCH Carrier IQ and Smart phones, then demand your money back.

lenlangevin 3 weeks ago
@lenlangevin Yeah, you'll really be saying that when they find your child or someone else that you love murdered, and lying in a ditch somewhere because of a smartphone!
mysticdragon75 3 weeks ago
@mysticdragon75 If you know anything about violent crime, the vast majority of victims are known by the perpetrator - usually a friend, relative, spouse or ex spouse who already has all the information they need without a smartphone.
lenlangevin 3 weeks ago
@lenlangevin What does that have to do with anything? They already proved that this can happen! You wanna bury your head in the sand and say that this will never happen to me, be my guest. But you will have nobody to blame but yourself if it does!
mysticdragon75 2 weeks ago
@mysticdragon75 If you want to live you life in paranoia, then go ahead. Just because someone can do it, it doesn't mean it will happen. I'll say it again. Most victims of violent crime are known by their attackers. The attackers don't need any technology to find their targets. They already know who they are.
lenlangevin 2 weeks ago
@lenlangevin Being cautious and safe is NOT living my life in paranoia! Would you walk out into the street and tell people you ave $1,000 in your pocket? NO! Allowing a pedophile to find out where your child is located amounts to the same thing! It is inviting bad things to happen! If you have children than I pity them.
mysticdragon75 2 weeks ago
@mysticdragon75 Nowhere did I say anything against taking common sense precautions. I'm talking about the odds. The odds of my kid being cyberstalked or stalked in real life by a complete stranger using GPS information is infinitely smaller than being attacked by someone she knows.
Is it possible for you to get hit my a meteorite as you walk down the street? Yes. Do you wear a helmet to protect yourself from that? I certainly don't.
lenlangevin 2 weeks ago
@lenlangevin mysticdragon75 pretty much covered what I was going to say. It would be good if gps was enabled between parents and children and so that the police can help track lost or kidnapped children! Too many damn pedo/stalkers out there! Human trafficking also is a real risk! You must be missing the news these days!

GPS data can be erased from pictures with metadata erasers like the free BatchPurifier LITE.
Hofdu 3 weeks ago 17
@Hofdu
I think it would be a good idea if this information about "erasers" was propagated as much as the dangers of GPS data were. If the people who produced this clip won't do it, how about telling us how to erase GPS data?? This would be as important as being aware of this terrible feature that is being allowed - GPS data. How irresponsible can the corporate plutocrats get who sell these dangerous devices ??

its kinda cool, but its a good lesson that you should read the manual to your smartphone. but seriously? They act like stalkers are in groups just waiting to get your kids or something. BLACKXD4 3 weeks ago
Well, I for one don't care, i have two German Shepards, and a whole arsenal of weapons, a person would be stupid to break in. I will shoot first ask questions later. Jimboz3129 3 weeks ago
DuaneKerzic 3 weeks ago
no better remedy than controling what you share. Pixelgarde makes free cross-platform apps for this. fast, easy and free.

weewoozesty 1 month ago 3
This is what happens when you give technology to those who shouldn't be using it. People have gotten too lazy, to read and understand what they are doing. It's all about money these days, the fast you can put something online the more it will sale... People need to take the time to READ and study the security settings on everything from their phones to social sites.. It's a matter of being lazy on the user part....

seriously YOU ARE ALL MORONS
geotagging on pictures is wonderful, with it you can find the precise location as to where you were when the photo was taken.

"Internet crime experts" do know that EXIF data may contain GPS/cell phone tower geolocation metadata. The law enforcement officer they interviewed is clueless and yet they decided to include him in the piece because it adds to the fear mongering. If he didn't know about location information within EXIF data, why are you asking him about today's "online risks"?
davidgunnells 1 month ago

crayzcon 1 month ago
Why don't the phone manufacturers just build in that turnoff feature? Why have it an option anyway? Their phones solve problems, but they also create unintended problems. Congress should pass a law requiring gadget manufacturers to eliminate such unintended consequences. Why should they saddle the phone purchaser to turn off the feature? That feature is not a feature; it is a detriment instead.
bobtuda 1 month ago
this is why, if you care about your kid or whatever your photographing, you should TURN OFF your gps AND turn off the camera's link to your gps. I have a smartphone and you cannot find my location because I am cautious.
