anyone who thinks that drivers could gain an advantage in cornering speed by jabbing at the throttle in 2011, but somehow choose not to, know absolutely nothing about F1.
"senna maintains he's speed with tapping he's foot on throttle. in the corners"
Why would he tap the throttle ? in my opinion he was trying to trail the throttle smoothly as any quality race driver should do but with the tracks being so bumpy it sounded as if he was tapping it.
senna maintains he's speed with tapping he's foot on throttle. in the corners, and yes steers the cars also with the same driving skill. Also he used the heel and toe style. Senna is a real legend.

Before anyone calls modern F1 "for pussies", just bear in mind that when you are put in the car, it is not a racing game or touring cars. Many people will be scared to drive in the new cars. But @deejayzak it is a good point, the cars are supposed to be cutting edge I think.
@nickJod1234 I've been watching F1 since 1979, I think F1 today ARE for pussies, the car does most of the work and the driver just needs to not make mistakes, Red Bull has the best setup and look at how Vettal is doing and look at how Hamilton is struggling because McLaren-Mercedes made a bad build this year. If this was 20 years ago Hamilton/Button vs Vettal/Weber would have been much closer with fewer electronics and various configuration differences.
@sookster54 Maybe. I agree that because the cars were more... "loose", it took great daring drivers to tighten them up. But now they stick to the road of course. But, the new cars are so tight, that they can snap on you any moment. I think that is brave to drive at 150 mph corners when the car could spin super quick.
@nickJod1234 The downforce on today's cars are about 5x greater than the era you see in the video, back then half the drivers drove with more speed and less downforce (like Schumacher, Senna and Mansell), Vettal's RBR has huge downforce and with his track consistency he can win races.
Maybe Im getting old but F1 to me has always been about absolute cutting edge technology, pushing the boundries of what is technically possible with no limits, now I understand that no limits is very expensive, but I dont see how a 4cyl engine, turbo or no, fits with the ideals of F1, whats next, diesels and biofuel?
I have his '89 Suzuka incident video favorited, the difference between the V10 and V12 is quite noticeable, this one with a V12 has a much higher pitch rev so I like the V10 sound more since it sounds more raw.
@SLaYD666 modern f1 cars haven't had any driver aids, computers to help them drive, for about 7-8years. the cars all have standardised, sealed, ecu's to prevent anyone using them. they take at least as much driving as they ever have, the cars are always beyond the point of adhesion, constantly sliding, it's just that the down force levels have increased so much they cant let the cars slide too far as quite simply they're at far higher speeds than they ever were, so would have far bigger crashes.
@BizzLeVrai There were no V12 turbos and turbos were out of f1 in 1989. And he is using a semiautomatic transmission if you look at his finger movements.
Gerhard Berger said in an interview "If you want to handle the 1986 John's Player Lotus that was driven by AYrton Senna, to just drive it, you have to be A MAN"
The glory days of F1 are gone, by the departure of V10....
ohh thats just jizz in your pants stuff right there isnt it? and to think they are talking about 1.6 4cyc engines for the future...v10/v12 turbos FTW!!!
@MrIrishlogic Your name says it all, you're backwards. You have no fucking idea what you're talking about, I have also watched F1 for the past 20 years. The older cars are MUCH harder to drive on the limit, but WTF would u know cunt. Obviously fuck all! The older cars had no where near the downforce of todays, had way more power, and weren't controlled by computers. But u will disregard all that cause u r fucking backwards.
While its true that these old cars are probably more dificult to drive (Turbo lag until a certain RPM where the turbo will rip your face off). Despite what you might think current cars are also very hard to drive, you have to be perfectly precise and in perfect physical condition, there is no TSC/ABS. Sequencial gearbox's first came in 1989, so these early 90's cars did not have proper clutch's and manual gearbox's like on older cars.
This is awesome, but if it carried on like this, by todays standards it would be far too dangerous, the red bull car this year is probably the fastest F1 car ever built, its beaten a lot of the 2004 ferrari times that held most of the lap records, despite the restrictions and smaller engines.
They may reduce engine size again, but in a few years, aerodynamics and engine development will again push them faster. Without restrictions, the ideas that cause these great developments might never be.
Imagine how fast an F1 car could go if you combined the V12 turbocharged 1200hp engines from the late 80's, with the sophisticated downforce of today. Would be insane. Good luck having no traction control with that bad boy.
@lmd141 All turbo F1 cars were either inline 4`s (BMW,Hart) or V6`s (Ferrari,Renault,Cosworth) i think the inline 4 BMW put out about 1450 bhp in qualifying trim in 1986!! not bad for 1500cc :)
my god that honda V12 sound is just epic, have to change my pants every time i hear it. its not that i dont love the sound the current V8 used today, but they sound like two storks compared to this. I also love the way Senna controls the car
notice how much more gingerly they have to be with the throttle than they do now, even without traction control these days, the cars have so much more grip.
ye hes trying to get onto the power as soon as possible, to find the grip and the speed when he exits the corner. he was a master at this...its simply amazing
Formula 1 died many many years ago... This video is how F1 should be now! V12's with more technology freedom... Not little V8's with cars that look like kids toys... F1 sucks now...
@calaiscruiser i couldn't agree more with you, the cars do look like little toys. they wanna cut costs they should go back to the v10's or 12's intead of the fragile v8 with 18K rpm. and of course more techniccal freedom. when a audi R10 is faster than a f1 car is a joke! hell i would preferer the turbo v6 ith over 1k hp. that would be racing. bring back true aero dynamics back to F1 the ferrari 641/2(F190) was a beautiful car, the F10 ugly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
@flipsidedogchop F1 is far from going forward. this is real driving, real shifting with a clutch! no tc no lc or anti stall, true driving is what F1 should be all about. from v12 to v8 how is that going forward. the cars are actually slower today that they where in 2002. the real f1 should a v12 with 1000 plus horse power with all the tecnical freedom they want and no electronic! let the driver get payed to actually "drive".
@ferny12345623 1000 plus horsepower? thats a view of someone who has no responsibility for the safety of people involved or spectating....... and f1 isnt going forward? so u think f1 is going backwards? fck off
@flipsidedogchop in a sence, yes F1 is going backwards in terms of the "show" modern F1 has become GP2. borring with little to no overtaking, no refulling pretty much worthless tire choices. every year cars get slower by huge downforce cuts. that is not moving forward. F1= gp2 at 10X the cost!
@ferny12345623 the breakthroughs with carbon fibre/aluminum etc.. seems to have changed everything. It's all areo now compare to how it was back 20 years ago. I not like most of these old farts who love to complain. times change, things move on. When Bernie/Mosely die or resign maybe we will see a return of the V12 or 10 which were better! Lanuch control was banned a few years ago wasan't it. I don't agree with all this complaining F1 has been great this season!
@calaiscruiser i think your view may have changed in light of the season just gone but il say this anyway. F1 doesnt suck now, its just different. there are so many more elements to think about and its about more than just going flat out on a track. dont get me wrong i think the Senna era was absolutely amazing, but change is good.
when F1 ends (which it inevitably will) we will be grateful for the differences in the era's of the sport over its lifetime. (minus 2000-2004)
@TheStradaleFormula I've watched F1 since the late 70's, I actually think F1 sucks now although I still watch it. Passing is nearly impossible now, there's a rule that you can't block the driver behind you from passing and the new tracks were supposed to bring open passing (Korea and Abu Dhabi) but those new tracks sucks and I bet the new Texas one will suck too.
@sookster54 the new Texas track is being designed with "spectacle" in mind, coupled with the new rules, i very much doubt it will suck. Abu Dhabi you do have a very valid point about. it has a fundamental problem that needs to be sorted out. but with this aside, Formula 1 is as great a sport as it has ever been and will continue going from strength to strength. we have dawned on another new era of F1 and it is going to be amazing! what are your views on the future of the sport?
@vprmn the only progress that they have to make is more hp per the same size engine , more revs , more aero's , more tire research and better braking . we have to open the floodgates to technology >
why do you think its as prestigeous as it is .
because it takes hundreds of millions to be competitive and have the best shit
we dont care if you cant afford it . if you cant hang with the big boys then go race le mans or something stupid like that . germany touring car series ,lol
@mushrume F1 is about speed, and 1.6 cars with KERS will be fast too. if you dont want progress watch races 20 years ago. stronger engines, but slower times.
@calaiscruiser yes, but actually the F1 was beginning to "die" in 1993 when Willians introduced all the new eletronic stuff and easily win the Championship. Senna was already pissed off, and unfortunately for all of us, he made the mistake of continuing in the F1.
The engine alone won`t be enough to bring F1 back, but we all know that technology never step back.
II Leone was driving a conserative race because he could win the title at Hungary. Patrese lead from Pole Position for 38 laps. Mansell made his Move on Gerhard at 1:42.
semiautomatic gearbox was introduced by Ferrari 1989, by Williams 1991 and by Mclaren 1992. all the three teams suffered reliability problems in their first year.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
let me educate all you little know alls - Clark that's the name to remember, the 60's . Cars that were not strong at all, circuits with trees surrounding them, the art of heel and toe, the most beautiful Fl car of all time the Lotus 49 without the wings. Jim Clark the first person to go round the Old Nurburgring in under 8 mins.
Allow me to educate you!! Senna was using heel and toe except for his final 3 years. Brick walls hurt as much as trees. Wings make the car faster, not better. Get over yourself. Senna was a great driver, as was Clark but to compare the two is fanciful. Two different eras. Accept their greatness, thats all that is required
Yeah ppl we are looking at two drivers from completely different generations even though Senna & Hamilton share the same spirit, I think to be fair Hamilton seems very humble & appreaciative, compared to the likes of Montoya (I wont even go there)
As some of mentioned time will tell definitely.
I do think Bruno Senna has a good future ahead of him & not because of his relation to Ayrton but because of his determination & character, I think he will go very far again excellent footage right here
the mclaren in 1992 was inferior to the williams, ayrton did well by even winning a race. and for your information, senna won this race, mansell was 3rd after a puncture. i think its funny your named after juan pablo montoya and your saying senna and mansell are avaerage...
The cars have changed so much over the years...but there is something really amazing when you see these onboard shots of these cars...i cant put my finger on what it is...i guess its the sound and the way they handle...its looks like these cars took more skill to handle...with all due respect to todays drivers.
That's very wrong! Ferrari already used paddle shift in the Ferrari 640, which was the car they used from the Brasilian GP 1989 on. McLaren had paddle-shift for the first time with the MP4/7, which is the car we see in this video.
Patrese is out in front, Mansell is the one who overtakes Gerhard into turn 1 1:44. Mansell knew he would have the championship wrapped up in Hungary. Patrese had to win.
senna had a very precise style. in this video you can see a not brilliant start, but in the first corner he was very late on the brakes and overtook Patrese easily on the outside. brilliant! that's a pattern we often have seen from him: overtooking in the first corner
i agree, the sound of the V12-Honda is incredible!
My take on the Schumacher Senna argument is, well, I think both drivers were excellent. They both were very very good at carrying speed through the corners and both were agressive and would push very hard to win. Another note, I really love the sound of the old V-12s, they were absolutely breathtaking. Just watching Senna drive reminds me a bit of Lewis Hamilton, calculating every corner to its precise detail. Great Video!!! THX
You're right. They both are excellent, but Michael raced in a different Era that just sucked. Schumi's era completely sucks, there was only 1 car and only 1 driver, EVERY DRIVER who tryed to defeat Schumi... DID IT ! The Only one who tryed to defeat Schumi and lost was HILL in 94. Alonso won Schumi, Hakkinnen won Schumi, Hill won schumi(96) Villeneuve won Schumi even FERRARI HAD TO SAY "STOP" TO BARRICHELLO in 2 ocassions to let Schumi pass him. THAT never happened in Senna's era. NEVER.
dont you ever EVER mention senna in the same breath as lewis hamilton. hamilton is a little whinging prick who has been babied by ron dennis from when he was in karts. a lot of people could do what he has done if they had preferable treatmant also. senna is a legend, hamilton is a rookie who has yet to earn a mention yet.

I not like most of these old farts who love to complain. times change, things move on. When Bernie/Mosely die or resign maybe we will see a return of the V12 or 10 which were better! Lanuch control was banned a few years ago wasan't it. I don't agree with all this complaining F1 has been great this season!

@calaiscruiser Emagine Imagine Senna in an over power v-12 2010 car... like the RBR car. he'd be on pole every race.

@Lev08e39M5 also schumacher can do it, because with v8 the real driver can't use all their big potencial

@calaiscruiser V8 kicks ass to your V12 with these days aerodynamics..
V12 engine? higher costs, fuel consumption? higher level of failure?
F1 is not about ENGINE its about technology..
vprmn 1 year ago
@calaiscruiser i think your view may have changed in light of the season just gone but il say this anyway. F1 doesnt suck now, its just different. there are so many more elements to think about and its about more than just going flat out on a track. dont get me wrong i think the Senna era was absolutely amazing, but change is good.
when F1 ends (which it inevitably will) we will be grateful for the differences in the era's of the sport over its lifetime. (minus 2000-2004)
TheStradaleFormula 1 year ago
@TheStradaleFormula I've watched F1 since the late 70's, I actually think F1 sucks now although I still watch it. Passing is nearly impossible now, there's a rule that you can't block the driver behind you from passing and the new tracks were supposed to bring open passing (Korea and Abu Dhabi) but those new tracks sucks and I bet the new Texas one will suck too.
sookster54 1 year ago
@sookster54 the new Texas track is being designed with "spectacle" in mind, coupled with the new rules, i very much doubt it will suck. Abu Dhabi you do have a very valid point about. it has a fundamental problem that needs to be sorted out. but with this aside, Formula 1 is as great a sport as it has ever been and will continue going from strength to strength. we have dawned on another new era of F1 and it is going to be amazing! what are your views on the future of the sport?

@calaiscruiser V12 is old, F1 needs progress. 1.6 turbo and low fuel consumption.
F1 is not about ENGINE! V4 engine 1.6 and POWERFUL AERO...and the times will be as these days!
vprmn 1 year ago
@vprmn the only progress that they have to make is more hp per the same size engine , more revs , more aero's , more tire research and better braking . we have to open the floodgates to technology >
why do you think its as prestigeous as it is .
because it takes hundreds of millions to be competitive and have the best shit
we dont care if you cant afford it . if you cant hang with the big boys then go race le mans or something stupid like that . germany touring car series ,lol
mushrume 10 months ago
@mushrume F1 is about speed, and 1.6 cars with KERS will be fast too. if you dont want progress watch races 20 years ago. stronger engines, but slower times.

@calaiscruiser V12 were underpowered! The best configuration for NA F1's is v10... Not v12...

@calaiscruiser Cant wait till 2013 and the rebirth of the turbo charged engine
Raveil890 10 months ago
@calaiscruiser yes, but actually the F1 was beginning to "die" in 1993 when Willians introduced all the new eletronic stuff and easily win the Championship. Senna was already pissed off, and unfortunately for all of us, he made the mistake of continuing in the F1.
The engine alone won`t be enough to bring F1 back, but we all know that technology never step back.

semiautomatic gearbox was introduced by Ferrari 1989, by Williams 1991 and by Mclaren 1992. all the three teams suffered reliability problems in their first year.

let me educate all you little know alls - Clark that's the name to remember, the 60's . Cars that were not strong at all, circuits with trees surrounding them, the art of heel and toe, the most beautiful Fl car of all time the Lotus 49 without the wings. Jim Clark the first person to go round the Old Nurburgring in under 8 mins.
darkarts59 3 years ago
Don't forget Fangio, he was even better!
megahurtz30 2 years ago

I do think Bruno Senna has a good future ahead of him & not because of his relation to Ayrton but because of his determination & character, I think he will go very far again excellent footage right here

the mclaren in 1992 was inferior to the williams, ayrton did well by even winning a race. and for your information, senna won this race, mansell was 3rd after a puncture. i think its funny your named after juan pablo montoya and your saying senna and mansell are avaerage...

zardinho 3 years ago
The cars have changed so much over the years...but there is something really amazing when you see these onboard shots of these cars...i cant put my finger on what it is...i guess its the sound and the way they handle...its looks like these cars took more skill to handle...with all due respect to todays drivers.
smooththriller 3 years ago
Much of it has to do with the fact that, the onboard cameras today has an anti-shake function, with makes the ride seems totally smooth and easy.
Thats very deceptive!!!
I think the cars are just as hard driving today.
Remember the drivers are seated much lower, which means that a lot of cornes that were visible back then, is now blind!
Also the cornering speed has increased dramatically, so the g-forces the driver has to endure has risen!
But yes, its fun to watch these old vids!
Michaelingolfhansen 3 years ago
Do they down shift automatically?
XmegaPresident 3 years ago
no, there is a gearstick on the left i think, just bellow the steering wheel
brentonchris 3 years ago
Let's not call it stick but a shift-paddle.
armorgeddon 3 years ago
no, lets call it a stick. Paddle Shift came in abit after 92. I think it was 94 or 95
brentonchris 3 years ago
That's very wrong! Ferrari already used paddle shift in the Ferrari 640, which was the car they used from the Brasilian GP 1989 on. McLaren had paddle-shift for the first time with the MP4/7, which is the car we see in this video.
armorgeddon 3 years ago
oh, ok. I have a video with Senna doing the pole lap at monaco and he is using a gear stick and it says 1992, maybe it wasn't the right title. Thnaks
brentonchris 3 years ago
Ferrari was first with paddle-shift in 1989!
For some reason Mclaren went on for several years before using it, so the title of your video is problably correct!
Michaelingolfhansen 3 years ago
this sound is awsome. i miss it

Patrese is out in front, Mansell is the one who overtakes Gerhard into turn 1 1:44. Mansell knew he would have the championship wrapped up in Hungary. Patrese had to win.
Twin540i 3 years ago
amazing..you can hear the engine sound tapping as senna taps(press&depress quickly) the accelerator in the middle of the corner..wow..
remyshahrin 3 years ago
senna had a very precise style. in this video you can see a not brilliant start, but in the first corner he was very late on the brakes and overtook Patrese easily on the outside. brilliant! that's a pattern we often have seen from him: overtooking in the first corner
i agree, the sound of the V12-Honda is incredible!

THE Legend
asuspow2 4 years ago
My take on the Schumacher Senna argument is, well, I think both drivers were excellent. They both were very very good at carrying speed through the corners and both were agressive and would push very hard to win. Another note, I really love the sound of the old V-12s, they were absolutely breathtaking. Just watching Senna drive reminds me a bit of Lewis Hamilton, calculating every corner to its precise detail. Great Video!!! THX
Kartracer087 4 years ago
NEVER.
Taikamya 3 years ago
dont you ever EVER mention senna in the same breath as lewis hamilton. hamilton is a little whinging prick who has been babied by ron dennis from when he was in karts. a lot of people could do what he has done if they had preferable treatmant also. senna is a legend, hamilton is a rookie who has yet to earn a mention yet.
