Where do I buy a bronze this material? Here in Brazil there is the trumpet, I played yesterday with a brother from my church, he had a igualsinho this. Pretty much the timbre of the trumpet Conn 38B
Though MF & Cat played the 38B-this recording done in '82 has MF playing the Holton-you should have put up a recording of MF playing the Constellation-like 'Frame 4 the blues' or 'Where's Teddy'
here in philippines u can see a lot of those trumpet.. using in marching band.. for screamers upper registers.. :) i had test 1 one of those.. it is so different in upper register.. :) it has a mellow sound
i have a contilation trumpet and extended cornet but nither have valvles like that. they dont have to completly covered springs. My trumpet is from the 50's (dont know specific year) and my cornet is 1958.
@TrumpetRed114 I know it's been a year, but notice that the bell says "USA" below Connstellation--meaning that this is not an Elkhart horn...it might be from the 1970s-80s when Conn made its brasses in Abilene, Texas. UMI-Conn also made some recreation 38Bs in the late 1980s-early 90s.
I play a Conn Connstellation 52B, also a great horn. My first trumpet instructor playet the 38B and it was a great horn. I still love the feel of the heavy valves on this horn. Feels like the weighted keys on a piano in comparison to the light feel of standard non weighted keyboard piano keys.
I like my 1960 Constellation very Much. It has a quality mellow sound sounds nothing like this audio unless a shallow mouthpiece was used. This horn is NOT to be used by most in a section of trumpets, youll get drown out, it projects but it doesn't cut through. Good for Orchestra and mellow jazz..
Saying that i love my connstellation would be an understatement. It is the best horn that i have ever played in my life. I have yet to find anything that this thing cant do.
BTW: The song is "Admiral's Horn" by Maynard and seeing as it came off of the album "Storm", he was using a Holton ST302 with a Monette mouthpiece.
This is indeed one of the best if not the best. I've only seen one of these horns when I was starting to play play trumpet. It was being sold way back then for 5,000 pesos which is more than $100 today. It was so beautiful and I have been dreaming to have one but they are very rare here in the Philippines. You need to have a relative or friend who lives in the USA to import this beauty.
I'm VERY grateful to be an owner of this trumpet. I'm 16 and I started playing back in August 08 and I just came back from a band clinic at USC (South Carolina) and I used this one instead of my other Conn. My dad used my Connstellation when he was my age and thankfully took very good care of it. Amazing instrument.
You brought back this video! Bravo! I was just playing my Connstellation 38B today. It is still a great horn and I still love its sound. My parents bought it from a friend of mine in 1971 for my Christmas present. Little would I know then that it would be considered one of the best jazz trumpets EVER made.
It was a really great trumpet. Large sound and pretty easy to play. I had one in early 70's (a "second hand" one, according serial number a mid 60's instrument).
If I have good memory, Conn producted 38B from 1956-57 to 1979-1980.
I not sure Maynard used a Conn on that tune. In 70's, he had "signed" with Holton and, at the end of his life, with Monette.
I had never try an Holton "MF's horn"... And I'm too poor to buy a Monette. I play now on a Conn Vintage one. Great instrument too.
I bought a '78 "retro" model. Had a big, fat, tone, and seem to play on its own during a solo. Valves were kind of clunky and didn't work that well with stiffer strings. I sold it because the middle valve started to squeak.
@jerec576 Preference is what matters I guess. I played an x3 when I was deciding which horn to choose this month and it felt so closed off compared to the VO.
@JcWhatCounts20 Interesting, I found the X3 to be a finicky horn but a lot easier to blow and open the sound with. Must all be personal preference :P, some people like resistance to their horn, I hate it.
@jerec576 Haha, I guess so. I played a friend's Schilke in high school and it felt the same way. Playing the X3 reminded me of just how closed off it felt to me. But it really does depend on playing style, mouthpiece, embouchure and such.

This was not played on a Conn, but a Holton.

You're really wrong. Maynard played a Connstelation in the past, but no in this album from 1981.

I own a Conn Vintage One, but I can imagine the Connstellation is just as awesome. With a GR 64 Z** mouthpiece, these conn horns sizzle!
JcWhatCounts20 1 year ago
I play one of these and with a Loud LM 88S mothpiece and it certainly doesn't get drowned out in a section, believe me!

Hi @TNTGuitarHero2012
sorry for my delay.
Maynard Fergudon, album: "Storm", song: "Admiral's Horn"
worldofbrass2000 1 year ago
This was NOT recorded on a Connstellation 38B! Maynard was playing his Holton MF model when this was recorded.
Also - some of the photos on this site are of a silver plated Conn 8B Artist trumpet - if it has a brass-colored tuning slide it is a Connstellation.

Anyone know where you can get parts for a 38B, specifically the tuning slide?

Conn Vintage One's are considered intermediate by Bach/Schilke users. If you like your Conn, try out a lawler if you have the cash.
jerec576 2 years ago
@jerec576 Intermediate? For $2500+ ?? I think not. Besides, I'd take my VO over a strad anyday.
