Guys there are two reasons why the game is linear: 1. Because you don't have time to free roam when everyone is trying to kill you and 2. Square was going to make it less linear but released it before they could have finished it. Honestly, the game is linear, but that wasn't a problem, and when you get to grand pulse, it becomes amazing and not linear. Final fantasy 10 was linear but no one seemed to complain.
I'll admit the game was pretty linear, up until you got to gran pulse. That's when the game got really good. But even the linear parts were good due to the fun battles, awesome story, and characters that you couldn't help but like (with the exception of Hope). Overall this is on my top 5 games ever and I'm pretty sure XIII-2 will be right up there with it.
i like FF7. 8, 10 cos i am someone in the game and feel as that guy (Tidus, Squall, Cloud). FF13 is GOOD but i dont feel FF as im nobody. im someone that controls people in the game . Maybe im just old school. But really great if Square Enix could remake FF8 (better graphic, more side quest, more tear dropping cutscene).
@RunescapeFreaks2000 dont listen to that guy, its a real good game for a rpg and its a new style which i got use, but i heard they are changing the battle style so, get it to at least experience this project, im getting the sequel cause the story is good, cinamatic, and Lightning ;D . just make sure your strategy person lol
@FuckingTrueable it's not too difficult just use commando, synergist, sabatouer to start with buff up ur characters, and weaken ur enermies, then switch to commando ,ravanger ,commando to stagger them and then just keep hitting them, while switching to medic when ur low on health and us sentinel to protect ur characters against heavy attacks, or while ur healing/buffing up ur characters, oh and use haste as soon as possible....
@kairixmeforever Hello, well FF series does not is a continius story, every FF have a diferrent one, FF1 is one story and FF2 other and so on. But if u see FFXIII-2 or FFX-2 is the continius story of the FFXIII, and FFX or FFXII Revegnant wings is a seguel of the FFXII, hope i helped.

Final fantasy fans are not used to innovations, remember: the first 3 games had the same sprites for the characters :P This game is just very linear, a lot of people like the vast expanse world filled with sidequest ff games usually offer. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the game very much, I think it would have sold better with another name :/

Hey guys, I need some advise. I never played a FF game in my life due to the turn-based gameplay. I've seen that XIII has a more "action-oriented" turn-based system. Damn, I heard it was bad - but after playing through it...and only really liking the desolate town vanille and fang come from - i cant help but wonder if EA Games is somehow working behind the scenes - since they are the ones to make game companies whore out for money ussually, and focus less on the soul of a game.
The only thing that ruined this game was "Auto Battle" feature... if it was gone it would have been great. Too many "junk trashy spells" you just seem to throw around way to quickly. Should have been more menu based. I'm fairly sure anyone with a good knowledge of the game could beat it just by switching paradigms and mashing X.

Well I'm 22hrs into this game and I'm unimpressed. OK, its good to look at and the soundtrack is one of the best, but he critics were correct. Its too linear, follow the arrow, go in a straight line. What happened to being able to decide where you go next? :(

@Aries205 Well it was going to be like the one showed in the video at about 0:52, however for some unknown reason Square Enix decided to change a few months before the game released. The original battle system wasn't turn based, well from what I have heard and from the footage it looks like you would have had the same menu, but you would select an attack to use with a specific button instead of having to scroll through a list to select it.
i don't know what's wrong with final fantasy fans, this game is so rich in story and stuff, that's what final fantasy is all about and that's why i think this is one of the best. after 7 and 10 if you ask me.
People complain about the linear gameplay and towns... But the cast of ff13 is discriminated and chased by everybody just because they're related to Pulse. By making the gamer unable to interact with NPCs and towns, they're making the gamer actually FEEL the isolation and discrimination the cast faced. Also, the linear gameplay makes you feel controlled - just like the main characters were controlled by the fal'cie. Everything in the game was done to better convey the characters and the story.

The cast was great, I loved all the characters by the end of the game, the plot is solid (albeit a bit confusing near the end), the music is aweesome, the battle system is really fun, and what they did with the art direction is stunning...

@SafeAzFuck For the most part yeah, XI and XIV sucked, XII wasn't as bad as people say it is and XIII is actually one of my favorites. Square Enix is just more ambitious and they are moving away from the traditional Final Fantasy system. Versus XIII and XIII-2 both look like they will be pretty good though.

@RosaWictorie The main techno-y parts are at the beginning and end of the story. You spend most of the game (and postgame) on Gran Pulse, a planet of lush and untamed wilderness. Even Cocoon has its beautiful, natural parts, such as the Sunleth Waterscape. :D

Ever since i got this game in December, i played till the end of March, nonstop, everyday, and that proves how addicting and awesome this game can be. You really can't compete with a 4 month addiction to this game, unless you play it longer.
FF7 would suck if it was re-made, the entire charm of it is from those little blocks, and they would ruin something, it's already quite flawed. Leave FF7 alone, I say, It's amazing how it is, FF13, is just as amazing, in the end it left me more satisified than any FF, in FF7 once you beat Ruby and Emerald, get KoTR it's just over... But in FF13 Vercingetorix is always there for a rematch.
Dammit! I can't help but think to myself using Omnislash with those kind of new graphics. Just imagine controlling characters like from the movie Advent Children. And Tifa will look so hot too. REMAKE PLEASE!! :)

Damn, I heard it was bad - but after playing through it...and only really liking the desolate town vanille and fang come from - i cant help but wonder if EA Games is somehow working behind the scenes - since they are the ones to make game companies whore out for money ussually, and focus less on the soul of a game.

The only thing that ruined this game was "Auto Battle" feature... if it was gone it would have been great. Too many "junk trashy spells" you just seem to throw around way to quickly. Should have been more menu based. I'm fairly sure anyone with a good knowledge of the game could beat it just by switching paradigms and mashing X.

@Freedom3020 when playing through disc 1 a point will come in the game when it asks you to put in disc 2, that is when you play disc 2

Well I'm 22hrs into this game and I'm unimpressed. OK, its good to look at and the soundtrack is one of the best, but he critics were correct. Its too linear, follow the arrow, go in a straight line. What happened to being able to decide where you go next? :(

@Aries205 Well it was going to be like the one showed in the video at about 0:52, however for some unknown reason Square Enix decided to change a few months before the game released. The original battle system wasn't turn based, well from what I have heard and from the footage it looks like you would have had the same menu, but you would select an attack to use with a specific button instead of having to scroll through a list to select it.

i don't know what's wrong with final fantasy fans, this game is so rich in story and stuff, that's what final fantasy is all about and that's why i think this is one of the best. after 7 and 10 if you ask me.

People complain about the linear gameplay and towns... But the cast of ff13 is discriminated and chased by everybody just because they're related to Pulse. By making the gamer unable to interact with NPCs and towns, they're making the gamer actually FEEL the isolation and discrimination the cast faced. Also, the linear gameplay makes you feel controlled - just like the main characters were controlled by the fal'cie. Everything in the game was done to better convey the characters and the story.

Thank you for pointing that out. i was really getting tired of the constant complain about how linear the game is. but the characters are always on the run...they have no time to go into town or do whatever. They're enemy of the state hunted down by their goverment.

@MrJacques0 Yep. I think FF13 was a really good game. The developers were pretty genius in making it linear and controlled, as in reflects the control the entire cast is under. The cast was great, I loved all the characters by the end of the game, the plot is solid (albeit a bit confusing near the end), the music is aweesome, the battle system is really fun, and what they did with the art direction is stunning...

@claire1909 they didn't make it linear and controlled because they thought it would be good for the game, they did it that way because they are to incompetent and lazy to make a big rpg with todays graphics and standards. they have admitted themselves that they cant make a game like final fantasy vii with todays standard, it would be to "time consuming and expensive" and so on... wich is just bullshit, just look at just cause 2, skyrim, fallout 3 and so on.. i think squeenix is gone in 10 years

@SafeAzFuck For the most part yeah, XI and XIV sucked, XII wasn't as bad as people say it is and XIII is actually one of my favorites. Square Enix is just more ambitious and they are moving away from the traditional Final Fantasy system. Versus XIII and XIII-2 both look like they will be pretty good though.

@TheFinal360 nah.. FF7, still got the gameplay that just made you play the game. This one is fun too, but it's just missing something, besides Lightning is still a copy of Cloud (female Cloud). Sorry, this game's fun and all, but it just doesn't beat FF7

me too I've Played them all,and Lightning isn't for sure the best character of the final fantasy series. Many peple cant be attached to her because her coldness. ( Kain from ff IV was something like that but he was also charismatic.). Mine is only opinion of course.
(Sigh) If the fight in FF XIII was like this trailer, perhaps people apreciate that too. Difficult to do like that, but not impossible.

@RosaWictorie The main techno-y parts are at the beginning and end of the story. You spend most of the game (and postgame) on Gran Pulse, a planet of lush and untamed wilderness. Even Cocoon has its beautiful, natural parts, such as the Sunleth Waterscape. :D

Ever since i got this game in December, i played till the end of March, nonstop, everyday, and that proves how addicting and awesome this game can be. You really can't compete with a 4 month addiction to this game, unless you play it longer.

FF7 would suck if it was re-made, the entire charm of it is from those little blocks, and they would ruin something, it's already quite flawed. Leave FF7 alone, I say, It's amazing how it is, FF13, is just as amazing, in the end it left me more satisified than any FF, in FF7 once you beat Ruby and Emerald, get KoTR it's just over... But in FF13 Vercingetorix is always there for a rematch.

I love this game. I love everything about it. Graphics, sounds, gameplay, story, characters. Everything. Please, for you that complain, tell me what's bad with the game. I love the combat-system, a linear-route that you have to follow, graphics, sounds, characters and oh jeez, the story. The story is like just, orgasm...

This game wasn't so bad. Felt more traditional if you turned off the auto ATB and it also needed more open exploration and have it much earlier in the game. Also to people saying this is the worst ff game, ever heard of FF 11?
