I hope she was easier to work with on "the set" than Robert Young was - he made Shannen Doherty seem like an angel, and unfortunately he got away with it, too.
I know this question doesn't have any thing to do with Miss Ellie (whom I liked much better than Helen Crump-wish they'd kept her) but here goes-after Barney left an actor replaced him. His character's name was Walter, I think. Who played him, and how long was he on Andy Griffith? He was sort of annoying.
@NickelThief Thanks, I've looked all over YouTube and you're the only one who answered my question. Poor Jack/Walter-I don't think he intended to get on everybody's nerve.
@NickelThief Jack Burns annoying character was a product of Burns' work with Avery Schrieber. The ' huh, huh, huh' was one of their stock bits. Burns and Schrieber
From what I gather, she was quite a handful, back in the day. A fiesty, pioneer woman-libber type. But, I saw her on a fairly recent interview, and she's mellowed to a still very pretty mature woman.
I was going to comment there was always something kind of "Audrey Hepburnish" about Elinor, and lo and behold, 9675775 agrees! She will always be Betty Anderson and Miss Ellie to me. A truly lovely lady.
She was my favorite of all of Andy's girlfriends, I hated the teacher with the short red hair, she seemed like a stuck up snob, but Elinor was always so sweet, beautiful and warm
That was Helen Crump. Some people have that opinion, although I didn't mind her. My favorite of Andy's girlfriends was Peggy, only seen in a few episodes.
I don't think I remember Peggy, was she played by Tatum O'neals Mother? Or the actress who played Annie Oakley? I liked those women with Andy as well.
Miss Ellie just warmed your heart with those big brown eyes and that smile. One of our favorite Andy parts was when Andy first meets the young beauty. Andy is just grinnin ear ta ear and says to her " Your just as toothy...." Miss Ellie Walker was...and is a young man( and maybe and old man's) dream
Check out Archive Interviews with Elinor Donahue. Part 4 I think. I heard it yesterday. She felt she wasn't giving the role all it deserved because of emotional issues she was dealing with. I agree with you she would have added a wonderful legacy to the Andy Griffith Show.
dupewell - The original music to which she performed on Father Knows Best has been posted by DCLAQUETTE (see related Videos). I substituted the jazz piece you hear here because I thought it fit well with her routine. I have lost the name of the artist performing this piece. Sorry.
Eleanor Donahue was such a beauty, absolutely gorgeous woman with a beautiful voice. Actually, let me correct that: she never stopped being beautiful...
Smoking HOT!

Here's one more vote for Andy pursuing Ellie over Helen -- by a mile.

Gail "Annie Oakley" Davis appeared as ThelmaLou's cousin who could outshoot Andy.

I did like Miss Ellie a lot better than I did Helen Crump. Helen just seemed a little constipated all the time, to me.

It was Jack Burns who played Warren. Jack gave it his best, but, yes, he was just annoying.

andy should definitely have married ellie.
she was perfect for him.
helen crump was GROSS.
she always got mad at andy for things that weren't his fault.
i loved in one episode where he flat out tells her, "well don't get your nose out of joint!"

Yes, Tatum O'Neal's mom, Joanna Moore.
She didn't lead a very happy personal life.
chaffer2 2 years ago
I read that she had a really tough childhood and adulthood, very sad, she was really pretty and had a calming laid back presence.

This clip is obviously a labor of love - I too looked to Eleanor Donahue as a feminine ideal in the early to mid 60's.
