@bestamerica The whole point is to have the focus on your foreground subject, and a nice soft blur (bokeh) in the background. That is how professional cinematographers work to keep your attention on the subject and not on the background.

Very very nice. This must have been done by a pro, because it just looks fantastic. I hope when I get my GH1 I can get the videos to look at least half as good as that.
can anyone explain exactly how they got a shot of this quality and look? I've been trying to get my video to have that proffesional sheen to them but I'm not quite there yet. Seems all of the sample videos in this set have it. Its not just the camera. there are plenty of test videos posted using the GH1 that dont have the quality.
I'm not so sure, even comparing a number of clips taken by others with the same camera, there are several with highlights in range and shallow DOF. I'm tempted to write it off to the better dynamic range of the camera vs. most prosumer cameras but take a look at the first episode of The Guild, shot on a DVX100, also has that almost painted or airbrushed skin tone quality that is common to proffesinal tv/film.
I am sure it is an overcast day because there are no hard shadows in the scene and I am sure the model's makeup is air brushed on. Overcast = diffused light = better exposure.

@bestamerica The GH1 can give you full focus for foreground and background however you will need to change some settings.

The GH1 seems nice in controlled situations, but I think it may fall apart handhald with motion or busy backgrounds.

the shallow depth of field and no blown-out highlights make this video look professional.
The shallow DOF is probably done using a manual lens of f1.2 or f.14
