  • Too much worbling for my taste, much prefer the Letterman circa '84 version.

  • Does music get any better than this?

  • GOD i love it when wikapedia introduces me to new music. i got here from evanescences wiki page :)

  • I keep coming back to this...over & over & over

  • lunasea11, the biggest truth you could say, we are wrong about everything, but there is a way to find ourselves, to find out who really we are, I am a spanisg guy, so I don't know if you can get this audiobooks in english, but try to find any material from Facundo Cabral and "los cuatro acuerdos" from Miguel Ruíz, then you will realize how wrongs are the 99% of our most strongest beliefs.

  • i never thought i would see this again. i love the fact that I am wrong about this and possibly about everything else I think I know.

  • Beautiful . . . Enchanting . . . .

  • it seems you cant please some people!! this is superb!!!! if you dont like this go elsewhere, but keep your stupid uninformed comments to yourselves,,,, this is superb and by three of the most wonderful respected songwrtiers on the planet,,,

  • It won't get any better than this!!

  • If you have 10 jaw-dropping musical moments in your life, it's a life well-lived. I think this is number 6 for me.

  • I was there in a forgotten dream.

  • the best performance i've ever expeienced-chilling. i love you buffalo! flying above you every day and smiling!

  • Great tune, great performances, but the drummer speeds it up way too much.

  • Gabriel has introduced the song while performing it live many times stating it was written for people on death row

  • Now THIS is a Threesome. Gorgeous! Thank you.

  • Can anyone explain what this song means?

  • @greatbookie That's a little difficult to say. According to at least one source it is a reference to acid rain.

As I understand it, at the time Gabriel was having a recurring dream of being in his pool drinking red wine, which was one inspiration. Early in his solo career he also had an idea for a movie called Mozo in which villagers were punished for their sins with blood red rain. This was intended to be the theme song, but the idea was scrapped.

  • Amazing version of this song!! I love it when Peter's voice comes in. Does anyone know exactly which year this is from?? Peace, Alex

  • Double-you oh double-you

  • This makes the 90s child in me very happy.

  • @BlueSilverStars , ooo yeh!

  • Whats better? listening to peters gabriels dvd or david gilmours?

  • The way Michael starts it is incredibly poignant.

Of course Peter is fantastic on it, and Natalie sounds amazing on her part.

  • I love all these 3 artists...R.E.M. & Natalie Merchant were teen faves (R.E.M.'s 'Eponymous' & Natalie's 'Carnival' album...not to mention Pete Gabriel's 'Solsbury Hill', w/the badass Erasure cover...good stuff...

  • Damn.

    Just damn.

  • I love all of them and this song is wonderful, although Natalie got a bad tone @ 1:27. Anyway it's great moment

  • I love all of them and this song is wonderful, although Natalie got a bad tone @ 1:40. Anyway it's great moment

  • EPIC

  • I stumbled onto this. UNBELIEVABLE!

  • Gave me cold chills when Pete chimes in...this was like finding gold to me!! Awesome!!

  • brilliant...all of them....what talent on one stage....and the song.....is just the song...of the hour....when i think of Fukishima...i know its not about radiation necessarilty...but the words.....and the emotions it evokes...

are very very close to home...across japan and the entire world right now

  • Would love to hear a Stripe solo version of this

  • Absolutely amazing.

  • there is no one bigger than Peter G.

    I bow before theee

  • JAJAJA...! TAMBIEN ME GUSTARIA ESTAR ALLI...!

  • simply stunning performance

  • BELLISSIMO BRANO

  • When Pete comes in at 0:44 his voice diabolically haunting, I absolutely love it when he sings in that booming lower register.

  • @SynthOrgan Natalie and Peter, Honey poured over thunder..

  • @SynthOrgan whoever had the idea of putting these three together to sing this song, he should be given a gold AND platinum medal!!! Excellent version of a super song from the So album

  • Peter Gabriel is a musical genius. This is a brilliant performance.

  • @yesspaz I disagree, I think she adds well to the entire ensemble.

I actually feel that Michael Stipe is the weakest part of the combination, but that just goes to show how it's a case of diff'rent strokes I guess. :)

    btw Merry Christmas!

  • Am I the only one who thinks Natalie Merchant butchered all the harmony sections? She can't blend at all. Her solo moments were great, but she stuck out like a bad sore in the harmony.

  • @yesspaz ya your the only one

  • The profundity of her eyes is unfathomable. You can look so deeply into them.

  • That is as good as it gets

  • this has got to be one of the most amazing...

  • Gorgeous. What an incredible trio. Magic.

  • Criminy - that's three amazing voices working together beautifully. I gots chills.

  • Fucking amazing!!!

  • show de bola

  • Un-Fucking-Believable ... It's always better "Live"

  • Sometimes thing clics-reach around. im in

    aw!

  • Absolutely top class rendition.

I was going to say cover version, but with Peter present, it's harly a cover is it?

  • @woodstalk1960 Do you imagine for a moment that Gabriel was forced into this? I figure he does pretty much what he wants...

  • awesome collaboration.

    ANYONE HAS THE SONG 'PHOTOGRAPH'?

  • @qba5775 I have the CD that includes Photograph; 1993 Rykodisc benefit CD for NARAL called "Born to Choose."

  • @cosmogenic2003 I'm gonna search it up in some stores in my hometown but I doubt it has distro here in Poland and if it has I think it might be out of stock for a while...

And guess what I'm gonna ask you for.

If you upload it, I'll put up some rare REM stuff if you wish so

  • @qba5775 Amazon has nearly 100 used copies of the Born to Choose CD's on file.

  • Having just to just listened to this song, i am so pleased to enjoy it.

Natalie is top stuff, vocally and just herself.

  • Came across this video tonight. What a great treat! I love the three vocalists in this video- Gabriel, Merchant and Stipe. When one finds something this fantastic, one must share.

  • i wished natalie would be free to marry me.

love everything about her, from top to bottom and in between.

her voice is the best i ever heard.

if i was dying and that VOICE crooed into my ear i would come alive fast.

  • really...are there words? thank you seems unspeakably inadequate.

  • A clusterfuck of styles. This wasn't a collaboration....it was a fucking cacophony.

  • @MrGravewalker

you're a fucking idiot!!! but you are clueless....peace on you.

  • @TheMountaincur

LOL! Amazing how the people that want to insult your intelligence have piss poor grammar and write like Kanye West's bastard child.

  • Wow, these are literally three of my all time favorite artists singing one of top five favorite songs. Why did it take me so long to find this?!

  • "I come to you, defences down, with the trust of a child..." that's such a powerful line!

  • I dunno...there's SO much music that I love...that evokes magic eons away from words....but this is one of the most incredible things I've found. Thank you so much. WOW! thank gods they got together no?

  • amazingly beautiful, thank you for uploading

  • I'm so happy right now! I stumbled on this accidentally- Three of the best voices, one of the best songs ever.

  • Sorry to say this but I've never heard these 3 son of bitches were together... man what a concert !!! I'm speechless

  • MUITO BOM !!!

  • Peter Gabriel is so great! It must have been a dream fullfilled for those two to sing this song with that genius... that would explain why this recording is so wonderful :0)

  • God, I thought that was Tom Waite comming in at 0:47

  • What was this from?

  • Awesome- Gives me chill's just listening! Thank You For Uploading! <3~ Mush

  • pray for the aquatic life in the gulf of M. Pray for your souls.

  • Excellent!!!! thank you, for uploading!!!

  • what a performance, incredible!!!! I love this song.

  • I thought it was filmed in Japan o_O

  • Wow! Peter Gabriel: amazing! Michael Stipe: brilliant! Natalie Merchant: mesmerizing!!!! OUTSTANDING-SPINE CHILLING performance!! Enough said!

  • Bulshit

  • Thanks beautiful

  • This is the perfect combination of 3 musicians with integrity and heart!!! Thank you for sharing this vid. It is stunningly beautiful!

  • Blairzel...Why Do You Say That About Them. I Would Love To Hear What Has made You The Authority Of Who Is Self Righteous. I want A 200 word or more report on my desk ASAP!

  • Mike n Natalie giving homage to Mr. Gabriel, they are not much apart in age, but I think both respect his genius.

  • peter gabriel looks like mel gibson and michael stipe looks like maynard james keenan

  • Natalie all the way!

  • peter larga el habano

  • goosebumps............. awesome!

  • @jefff4750 same here, so great

  • impresionante este trio

  • Jourell you are absolutely right. Another great collaboration that comes to my mind is B.B. King and U2 on Rattle and Hum. Great stuff!!!!the dj

  • all my heroes together wow

  • pouring down all over me..

  • someone please tell me did they ever record this version?

  • This is a priceless gem. The talent level is A++++++++.

The best part is that all three of these great artists were hitting their peak. I love Pete Gabriel's music always have, especially the album this song comes from SO, but he's probably twice as old as Natalie Merchant and 10 to 15 years older then Michael Stipe.

I love that the age gap makes no difference. This performance is magnificent, one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. the dj

  • Age and even style make no difference if done correctly. Music is truely one of the universal languages- I submit not only this song but the duet between Bing Crosby and David Bowie on white Christmas

  • @JeffTheNebraskaDJ

Natalie always looks much younger than she is. She's 13 years younger than Peter Garbriel, who's 10 years older than Michael Stipe. If this is from 1996, their ages were 46, 36, and 33 at the time (give or take a year).

  • They told me there would be no math.

  • What i wouldn't give to be in the front row...pure magic.

  • This is from the 1996 VH1 Rock Honors show for the watchdog organization "Witness" formed by Peter Gabriel in 1992. I'm looking for a copy of the entire event... Anyone?

  • devine

  • GooD Day

  • Words can not describe the shear awesome incledfiblness of this simply amazing display of great nimbleousity when examined under the microscope of every day hum-drum-idness.

  • I could not have stated it better! Pure eloquence!

  • I couldnt agree more. To try to put into words of the granduosity of this piece, would lead one to the infallible conclusion that not only are we not alone in this vast eternal universe, but that man is a non descript character playing in a role the likes of which all the gods are previewing, and yet at times, not only do I play the central role, but the gods interact within the play, as its being performed. A sort of inter-galactic rendition of "The rocky-horror picture show", if you will...

  • Simply lovely. Thank you.

  • with the trust of a child!

  • Oh, it's "...with the trust of a child?" I thought he sang "with the CRUST of a child."

    Well. That's quite different.

    Never mind.

  • This is fantastic!!!!!!!!!!the dj

  • Talk about 'All-Star' cast! Wow!

  • It's from 1995

  • What year was this performance from?

  • The neapolitan ice-cream of awesome!

  • when peter enters, it chills me. his voice is so unique (only joe cocker reminds me of him).

  • In a word. Awesome!

  • Peter Gabriel is GOD!

  • he is singing to him

  • Holy wow, what a trio! Natalie why dont you answer my calls? Pete, Mike, what up?

  • Yes! YES! YEEEES!

    (in heaven)

  • Unparalleled talent performing a true classic. Doesn't get better than this.

  • Gabriel,Merchant and Stipe..... What more can you say.... Natalie Merchant is my favorite female vocalist, Peter Gabriel is unbelievable, and Michael Stipe is a musical genius. I wish I was there!!

  • @Bntnredsox TRULY A GREAT COLLABORATION FOR A TRULY AWESOME SONG, ANOTHER GREAT COLLABORATION TO CHECK OUT IS ALBERT KING, STEV IE RAY VAUGHN AND PAUL BUTTERFIELD DOING "THE SKY IS CRYING"

  • @Bntnredsox True, i have been a R.E.M. and Gabriel fan since my youth and Merchant tops it with excellent singing!

  • @Pokal777 Just listening to Merchant gives me goosebumps...

  • Is he Tim Robbins ? Anyone knows what kind of show it is ...

  • VH1 Honors, I think.

  • Red Rain is beautifull song, but with Natalie and Michael Stipe is amazing ! I repeat again again again :)

  • Haven't heard before. Absolutely amazing!

  • That intro by Stipe was fucking awsome.

  • I remember being 13 or 14 and tape recording this. I loved Natalie so much. I sat about two feet in front of the tv in complete silence, just awestruck.

  • They all fail in comparison to Paula Coles back up singing. She owns the rights to duet with Peter Gabrial

  • yeah, right

  • Natalie is one of the best female voices ever

  • Holy Trinity Batman!

  • Wow! What a combo!

  • Hold ON KIDS!!! Is this the benefit show for "Witness"? If so, Stipe does a Sinead O'connor song "This is the last day of our acquaintance..." That was awesome. I was at that show and Stipe kind of stole it, with that song. I was drinking in those days and don't recall this, though..hmmm....

  • This is from VH1 Honors. I think it was an awards show.

  • Okay. I didn't recall gabriel or Merchant being at the Witness show. Thanks for the correction/update. Sure wish I could find video of that other show. Pete Townshend and Tim Robins were a part os it also. Again, thank you.

  • Happy to oblige :)

  • i love michael & Natalie but this version doesn't do this song any Justice. Peter owns it.

  • well i must say thank you for posting this . im a youtube fanatic . especially music. and this is the first time ive both cried , and got a chubbie at the same time . you couldn't barter for a better trio than these. loved it !!!!!!!!

  • I remember seeing this and being blown away, now I can FIND it! WAY COOL. Three amazing singers and an incredible song, what's not to like?

  • A favorite song of mine, But def 3 of my Favorite singers/writers...Thank YOU. "Peace whenever possible, anything is..." Medley

  • Damn, Peter is such a pimp. STAND...OUT!

  • they sound bad mixed together but then again im a rem n peter gabriel fan (as u can probably tell by my name haha) but i dont even know natalies work. no offense to anyone.

  • Where were you during the 1980s and 1990s? OK, Natalie Merchant has slowed down somewhat but in the 10,000 Maniacs and then as successful solo she got a lot of exposure and a lot of sales.

  • i wasnt alive man i wouldnt know

  • PG is a lot older than NM, but I guess he has some young fans.

  • love m. stipe to death, but he does not belong here, and i think he knew it as he kind of sat it out after his opening.

should have been just pete and natalie, who sound FANTASTIC together.

and i agree that there's a bit too much processing going on with p.g.'s voice.

  • Comment removed

  • Natalie and Peter are great. But who's this bold guy? Moby? :D

  • That would be REM's Micheal Stipe.

  • michael stipe of rem fame buddy

  • hahhahahah elton john was funny... well, I think they sound well separately but their voices don't mix well together. I don't know, just a thought.

  • Firstly I am not a fan of Michael or Natalie, but the original artist, Peter Gabriel is playing the keyboard and singing

  • Are you serious?

Firstly I cant stand Michael, or natalie, but the original artist is Peter Gabriel, who happens to be the third man in on this video, It's not a matter of being able to afford anybody, I would imagine natalie and michael are there to honor Peter and his accomplishments
