@greatbookie That's a little difficult to say. According to at least one source it is a reference to acid rain.
As I understand it, at the time Gabriel was having a recurring dream of being in his pool drinking red wine, which was one inspiration. Early in his solo career he also had an idea for a movie called Mozo in which villagers were punished for their sins with blood red rain. This was intended to be the theme song, but the idea was scrapped.
I love all these 3 artists...R.E.M. & Natalie Merchant were teen faves (R.E.M.'s 'Eponymous' & Natalie's 'Carnival' album...not to mention Pete Gabriel's 'Solsbury Hill', w/the badass Erasure cover...good stuff...
brilliant...all of them....what talent on one stage....and the song.....is just the song...of the hour....when i think of Fukishima...i know its not about radiation necessarilty...but the words.....and the emotions it evokes...

@SynthOrgan whoever had the idea of putting these three together to sing this song, he should be given a gold AND platinum medal!!! Excellent version of a super song from the So album
@yesspaz I disagree, I think she adds well to the entire ensemble.
I actually feel that Michael Stipe is the weakest part of the combination, but that just goes to show how it's a case of diff'rent strokes I guess. :)
Am I the only one who thinks Natalie Merchant butchered all the harmony sections? She can't blend at all. Her solo moments were great, but she stuck out like a bad sore in the harmony.

The best part is that all three of these great artists were hitting their peak. I love Pete Gabriel's music always have, especially the album this song comes from SO, but he's probably twice as old as Natalie Merchant and 10 to 15 years older then Michael Stipe.
I love that the age gap makes no difference. This performance is magnificent, one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. the dj
Age and even style make no difference if done correctly. Music is truely one of the universal languages- I submit not only this song but the duet between Bing Crosby and David Bowie on white Christmas
Natalie always looks much younger than she is. She's 13 years younger than Peter Garbriel, who's 10 years older than Michael Stipe. If this is from 1996, their ages were 46, 36, and 33 at the time (give or take a year).
This is from the 1996 VH1 Rock Honors show for the watchdog organization "Witness" formed by Peter Gabriel in 1992. I'm looking for a copy of the entire event... Anyone?
Words can not describe the shear awesome incledfiblness of this simply amazing display of great nimbleousity when examined under the microscope of every day hum-drum-idness.
I couldnt agree more. To try to put into words of the granduosity of this piece, would lead one to the infallible conclusion that not only are we not alone in this vast eternal universe, but that man is a non descript character playing in a role the likes of which all the gods are previewing, and yet at times, not only do I play the central role, but the gods interact within the play, as its being performed. A sort of inter-galactic rendition of "The rocky-horror picture show", if you will...
