I live across the road from a US Naval Air Station, where we see F/A-18's and P-3 Orions' almost daily. But we get C-17's visiting on occasion. You can't miss 'em because the engines are loud, they whine like a whistle. And the sound hangs in the air for a long time as they float across the sky in slow motion. It's really fascinating to watch a military transport jet move. Their high lift dynamics make them quite different than most other planes.
@AceDoubleG It's static electricity going off. The aircraft generates A LOT of static electricity. I have heard of crew chiefs being thrown 10 feet by just touching the aircraft after it has landed. That's why we use tie-down cords to ground it so the electricity is safely discharged. Keep in mind, I am still in tech school for C17 so this is just a guess from what I know. I might be wrong.
Sitting at the BX/PX on base in Alaska and the airforce has been flying those really low all day today it's really neat we gave Russian diplomats or advisors rides on one a few weeks ago when they were here about sharing more air space Russians are cool people lots of them here hope we can be allies one day.

"Airbus fan boys nightmare." When you see some clown posting that Airbus is better than Boeing (they actually exist, :-0) send em this. Excellent video
This vid was taken March 2007, The aircraft in vid was a USAF C-17, There was a RAAF C-17 on display at the same airshow. So yes, RAAF did in fact have at least one C-17 by March 2007 that is nine months before 2008, I think.
Believe it or not, most people don't know this. All planes have reverse thrusters to stop. I load these things. They are huge and can hold lots of weight. According to a crew chief of one C-17 I loaded, 1 engine runs about 75,000 pounds of thrust. These are what I call a fighter-cargo plane because its agile like a fighter and can carry loads like no other.
Believe it or not, most people don't know this. Not all planes have reverse thrusters to stop. eg., DC-3, F-14, A-10,F-15, F-16,F-18 and many others have no reverse thrusters. In fact many of these rely on Spoilers, Air brakes and Wheel brakes
DC-3 is radial engined with constant speed Hamilton Standard series 23 props, not beta. No reverse true. Having said that some turbine conversions use the PT-6b
which does reverse thrust. Cool video Paul 5 stars.
@paul2808 lol love u paul, people are all like i no this and this and im not wrong and then ur all like, yeah.... ur wrong ya twat....in a funny awesome way!! and u mimic what they write hahahaaa.. legend!!
wow that thing slows down quickly it could land in my backyard! well, probably not.... i wouldn't really wanna try it..... but still it slows down quickly
wicked strategy, reversing the plane to give it clearance to take off again straight after landing. uses the thrust to brake and reverse. don't see that very often.
Thrust reversers. You can see the cowls slide back exposing a grated area around the motor directing the fans flow of air diagonally forward and up after blocker doors close off the back.
Handy for backing planes into their spots in tight parking, slowing down quickly on the ground/air, or when the pilots go down the wrong dead end taxiway as we point and laugh while waiting to block them in.
sorry to break it to you no, why would an airline waste valuable seat space on a pool and soccer field? they will fill it with as many seats as they can. Think about it you suddenly get turbulance whilst your in the pool what do you do? strap yourself to the side of the pool? And banking the pool will drain during turns and that water sloshing about would destabilise the plane
I WAS THERE!!! THAT THING WAS UNBELIEVABLE... u no whats even scarier? the C-27J Spartan light transport, designed to replace the DHC-4 Caribou, shorter landing and take off than the C-17 and it can do flips
that could land in my back garden no problem. any pilot and crew of a c17 pop in for a cup of tea and a chat, the big house in pinner north london,p,s no dirty flight suits please,

i dunno. look when the camera zooms in at 0:58 and there's like... clouds or something shooting out of (or into?) the fans. looks wild though. amazing airplane.

Its just water vapour, due to the change in pressure it condenses rapidly to the vapour you saw
