  • I really enjoyed this video. It shows just what the 7D and other Canon D-SLRs are capable of. I just got a new Canon high-def camcorder (the Vixia HF G10), but when I'm really serious about my video I'll reach for my 5D2 for its excellent color, low-light capabilities, and shallow depth-of-field possibilities, and the L-series glass.

  • love all your videos.

  • what export settings are you using to keep this kind of quality on youtube?

  • wow amazing work i now have decided i am going to get this camera now thanks so much

  • i was just wondering, i imported my canon 7d movie clip to imovie09 and i was shooting 1080 at 24p. When i watched it back on imovie and i entered it at full screen, it seemed really pixely and wasn't very hd looking at all. Any ideas as to why that may be? Do you think its because imovie doesnt support 1080?

  • i love the scene at 2:04. the colors are amazing :)

  • everything looks so FAKE an unreal with these 7/5 d's...i live near Santa Monica peer, it looks nothing like that...this looks so clean and peaceful...it's kinda dirty and blurry there - ...but LOVE the effect...hope we won't get tired of it seeing everybody broadcasting this 'softer' reality.

  • @MacReviewzOnline Haha, I used to live in Santa Monica and thought the same thing. I was like, "Hey, the Santa Monica pier isn't this cool!" I think the 24 fps and warmer tone takes the edge off.

  • @psyclistic wait... how do you know it was 24 fps? It doesn't say that anywhere. The reason I ask is because I was wondering if the canon dslr's could shoot less than 50 fps.

  • @freezazoid It just looks like 24 fps. You know that cinematic look it has? That's typically imparted by a frame rate of 24 fps. I'm not that advanced when it comes to software, but I guess they always could have shot it at a higher frame rate and edited it to make it look slower. Anyway, I have a Canon T2i, and it shoots video with the following resolution and frame rate settings:

    1920x1080 @ 24 fps

    1920x1080 @ 30 fps

    1280x720 @ 60 fps

    640x480 @ 60 fps

  • inspiring. what a sensation colour correction is. the quality also of the footage is outstanding.

  • Great video, Editing & Music selection - Really loving it!

It's time for me to start using my 7D for videos like that! :)

    Thanks for the inspiration.

  • which lens did you use for the beginning restaurant shots?

  • was it easy to focus on the small lcd...... during day light...??

  • Wow, how did you get that perfectly round bokeh at the end with any of those lenses?

  • i bet he used the canon 50mm 1.8 set @ 1.8 with it out of focus

  • amazing video! I always love watching this one. What software programs did you use?

  • Good job!!

    Wich lens did you use??

I am looking for the same 7d body but i am not sure about the lens for video...

  • Bubba gumps lol

  • thats definitly the best 720p Video Ive ever seen here on YouTube the Quality is dammn good.

  • @rainarzufall

Look at this video, it's really amazing too : EOS 7D GLIDECAM 2000HD TOKINA 11-16 LEMON SQUEEZER | HARRIMAN STATE PARK DAYLIGHT MATT

Glidecam and the wideangle are brillantly used there and the editing is great.

  • BUBBA GUMPS

Anyways, I own this camera also and use it exclusively for video

  • very nice work

  • Comment removed

  • Wow, that was amazing! Nice footage, great editing, fitting music, perfect!

  • this is a great video! :D

what lenses did you use at 0:04(girl in restaurant), 0:59(group shot), 2:28(girl on beach)???? they look really nice..

  • nice work :)

  • yes, full time focus, meaning full time manual focus :-) you can focus even when camera is set to AF...

  • @feelda303 You should never manually focus a lens when it's set to Auto Focus. You'll ruin your lenses motor.

  • @DrewMaw no, lenses focus motor is for photo, not for video.

  • @feelda303 Yes, i'm aware of that, but when pulling focus, always be sure you never have your lens set to AF... you'll ruin your motor.

  • @DrewMaw With a lot of pro Canon lenses, as soon as you move the ring, the motor disengages. This is not true with the cheep consumer lenses, but with the pro lenses it is.

  • "Full time focus"?

  • great work! question: do you have access to full time focus in video mode?

  • cool visuals....buddy

can u please tell us what LENSES u used.

  • @shashi321 See description on right.

  • @DrewMaw not on right any more....

  • c'est sympa de voir santa monica si bien filmée!

  • I liked this, over all really good. But some really uncomfortable framing though

  • I'm gettin' one because of this. Thanks!

  • Great vid. gona get myself a 7d this time next year. cant bloody wait.

  • VERY NICE!!! On several levels (beyond just the technical, which was EXCELLENT!!!) But also very Soulful!

  • Great video, dude.

  • My email is dp24fps@yahoo(dot)com. Hit me up sometime. I'm prepping a short right now to be shot on a couple 7D's.

  • I am a DP/operator. My name is Tyson Maughan.

  • I used to, but don't anymore. At a certain point a demo reel isn't really necessary. I've been lucky enough not to really need one in the last 3 years.

  • Do you DP? What's your name?

  • I am. Got my undergrad their about 5 years ago. Recently recieved a presidential scholarship to get my masters. I though it was an opportunity that I couldn't realistically pass up. I'm doing it all online though, I work to much to be tied to classrooms. We should get together sometime outside of comments on YouTube. Haha.

  • gotta website? mine is DrewMaw (dot) com

  • No offense, but MTV is on par with reality TV....like bad reality TV. That place will swallow your soul. All I have ever done for them is operate. I would never DP.

  • Aren't you going to AAU?

  • i am! r u?

  • All in all good job, the only thing I would say is that your use of a high shutter speed really takes me out of the dreamlike compositions you have created. You are showing us one thing, but saying something completely different. I also have a 7D and unless I'm shooting extreme sports i.e. Paintball- I keep it at a 1/50. Being that it is a tremendously stellar low light camera, I suggest you invest in some ND's.

    Remember it's all about mood.

    -Desmond Brothaigh,

    LA based cinematographer.

  • It's funny that you say that actually, because I was going for an MTV style with this piece (i.e. a fast shutter) and a producer from MTV approached recently wanting me to DP a TV show pilot in NY. They're using this video as art direction for the show. But, I agree, I do need ND's!!

  • this video makes me wish I had money! very well done :) that last shot of the beach was so clean -- you made santa monica look real nice!

    keep up the great work

  • Why all still shots??

  • it's just a style I was going for, but they aren't all still shots. A few have movement.

  • @Nhzharuthopar did you even watch this video? I didn't see a single still shot the whole time...

  • Great looking images and overall nice video. Has a nice relaxed feel. How good is the 7D!! I just got one the other day. If you have a sec check out my test video I shot down the beach.

  • Keep it up dude. I see more than a good camera in this video. I favorite it

  • Thank you, i very much appreciate your comment.

  • Friggin' Beautiful. I love the 7D.

  • Fantastic movie and great choice of music.

  • What's that effect at 1:18 called and how did you achieve it?

  • On the 7d, when shooting 24p, is your shutter set to 1/50? At 60p do you have it at 1/120? Thanks. Great video!

  • 1/2000-1/4000 at times. :)

  • sick video. good music placement, if you have not seen it yet check out the movie "away we go" uses this artist alot. anyways you were shooting 24 fps this entire reel huh?

  • love that movie! yep 24p.

  • really good lookin stuff

    keep it up

  • Yeah the Canon 7d is great... We shot our short film with it...

  • That's gorgeous...

Pro work, could be an ad for a camera maker lol

  • Hello, i just filmed my first video with the 7D but as i preview them on my computer, it looks very grany? Do you know why? Is it because my iso is to low? Im filming in doors and the iso adjusts automatically.

  • NEVER SHOOT ON AUTO, that's your problem. Yes, the camera was probably choosing a way to HIGH iso, such as ISO 3200-6400.

  • Thanks for the tip, that might have been it. What iso do you recommend in doors and out doors?

  • Lower is always better. I personally never go over ISO 2500.

  • @DrewMaw i dont tking that auto iso is more than 1600...

  • I'm not sure where you're getting that info, but if for some reason you're right, then the camera is choosing to shoot at f stops higher than f8, which will also cause more grain at higher ISOs.

  • when you say Canon 50mm 1.8 - are you talking about the $100 dollar lens?!?!?! The footage is so crisp - it's hard to believe that can be done with such an affordable lens.

  • Yep, the very same $100 lens. I love it. :)

  • Right on man. I've watched a lot of your vids. Very nice work.

  • This is really beautiful. Very professional. Do you know of any affordable wide angle primes for the Canon that are also affordable?

  • the 50mm 1.8mm is quite an amazing little lens for it's price. It's a must buy.

  • Is this 24p or 25p? Also what shutter speeds did you use?

  • 24p. The shutter ranged from 1/1000 to 1/4000.

  • beautiful video....

  • thank you :) If you subscribe and if you're interested, I'm uploading another film I did with the Canon 7D tomorrow.

  • oh!!!! yes! I'm subbing now!!! ahh I want to buy this camera so badly.... :/ if you'd like, come to my channel, and on my main page, I have a short film that my friend and I made, we only have a crappy little samsung camcorder and imovie, but we did what we can... I can only dream of what we can do with FCP and this D7 (: Please, tell me what you think!

  • Hey Drew, great video. I use FCP too, where can I find the white out transition effect that happens at 1:23? Thanks!

  • It's called Additive Dissolve. It's a stock dissolve effect in FCP.

  • Did you edit anything in After Effects? You could get much better transition effects.

  • I have and use AE CS4, and am familiar with better transition effects, but for stuff like this, I prefer not spending too much time in post. Most people are only interested in the images that the 7D produces.

  • OMG

This cam has an amazing short depth of field!

    I'd like to have it!

  • Cameras don't create DoF, lenses do.

  • @DrewMaw hey that's right

hey, does this camera allow changing the lenses?

  • It's a photography DSLR camera. Yes, you can change lenses.

  • Great Video and excellent music composition. Makes me wanna visit this place.

  • Beautiful!!!

  • amazing video, gettin goosebumps!!! want to have the cam right now, but still have to wait some weeks :-X

  • Amazing stuff man. Excellent editing, some of the best 7d stuff out there. Just to goes to show what it can do in the hands of a technically skilled artist. Great footage.

  • Great footage, Santa Monica had never been seen this interesting ;-)

Your understanding of composition in a frame is great. Watching your video I presume that buying a 35mm adapter is a mistake right? The 7D does it all.

  • It really depends on what you're shooting. And no, to answer simply, this camera most definitely does not do it all. I promise you that.

  • I'm a film making student and I had a rough time hiding my camera in the streets cuz I couldn't afford to get permit, now with a photo camera in hand first you're not grabbing a lot of attention, second a Sony EX3 + an adapter + lenses + a satchler 3pod is gonna cost you almost 3 times more.

BTW do you have any idea about how can I edit a 7D footage on Premiere CS3? I always use AVI's so I guess MOV is gonna raise problems.

  • I have no idea. I don't use Premiere or AVI files.

  • Great skills and senso of composition! I've got my 7D arriving next week and watching some footage on the web got me worried. Your stuff makes me feel happy about my choice to purchase the 7D. How do you approach grading? Any tips?

    Well done.

  • i like the video, even is weird to me watch this on youtube because i prefer vimeo for the 7D vids. however, i got some questions: did you use FCP to edit? how heavy are the raw footage, i meant, did you need more than 2gb ram to edit, and (the last) in which format do you get the videos when you're gonna to edit? is it . mov?

    hehe thanks. already a fav.

  • Yes, I used FCP. I have a Mac Pro with a Quad Core CPU and 4GB's of Ram, and that is more than enough. I transcode all of my footage to ProRez via Mpeg Streamclip. for a tutorial go to my site drewmaw(dot)com > click blog> then click "Canon 7D importing and conversion"

  • thank you.

  • The 7D shoots footage compressed at H.264, which should be easier for your system to handle than uncompressed footage that might come from another camera.

I now have 4GB of Ram, but used to edit 720p footage with 2GB all the time (2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor)

  • how nice!! congrats.

  • You've composed some nice shots like w/ the guard house & the broadwalk & the painter; those in themselves would be good photographs.

Reviewers say the auto focus (or lack of it) is an issue, the sound that must be added w/ a Beachteck or other audio device. They also say it gets really hot & isn't a practical replacement. But you can change lenses so ...

Can you comment on your experience w/ those things?

  • It is and isn't a practical replacement, but it all depends on what you're shooting. For fiction/narrative filmmaking, it's a great alternative to the HVX200 and Letus adapter combo. It does get hot, but only rarely. It's overheated only when I was recording via 720p@60p for a long time. That was the only time. I'm acquiring sound (now) through the Zoom h4n synced with "pluraleyes". Autofocus is def not a problem. Any PRO never uses AUTO FOCUS anyways, always manual, regarless of camera.

  • Nicely done

  • gosh and I thought my nikon d90 was amazing...

  • I can't get enough of this video. I shoot HD with a Canon XHA1 but I'm seriously considering selling it and getting the 7d

  • Hey, i appreciate the comment :) I went through the same inner dialogue to sell my Hvx200. It's a tough decision indeed.

  • Are you happy with your choice? Any issues with rolling shutter or anything like that? You've obviously been able to pull off some beautiful images.

  • I mean sure, you're gonna get Rolling Shutter for sure. go to my home page (drewmaw (dot) com), and you'll see a teaser for a documentary I'm finishing up, all shot on the 7D. But, that being said, google "The Foundry Rolling Shutter", it's a plugin for After Effects to remove the rolling shutter completely. I haven't used it yet though, but I'll getting it soon. Audio is another situation, which, you'll have to use the Zoom H4N and get sound off-camera, but use "pluraleyes" and you'll be fine.

  • All good info. Thanks. Have you used any Nikon lenses with the 7d? They make adapters for them, and I actually have access to a good supply of nice Nikon lenses from a family member.

  • You know, I haven't actually. The only other lens I need is the 70-200 f2.8 from Canon. and maybe wide 11-16mm. Other than that, if you plan on shooting films with this camera, the production company rents all the lenses I need. You wouldn't use still lenses for films, but instead Panavision lenses or Zeiss lenses, as the focus rings and aperture rings are designed to be used with follow focus kits.

  • amazing DOF

  • What are your thoughts on Tokina 16-50 for photos? I see its appeal for video, with the wide focus ring, wide angle, 2.8. All the early reviews weren't too kind, but maybe the later batches were better quality.

Does the lens cast a shadow at 16mm with the built-in flash (without hood) on 7D? Thanks.

  • Yeah, I like it. To be honest, I haven't shot any photos with it yet :P But you're right, I like the wide focus ring.

  • goosebumps. fantastic video. just got my 7D yesterday...in my wildest dreams I imagine that I could put together something this great.

  • Comment removed

  • wow man, excellent video!

  • Hey, thank you! I'm actually just finishing up with another project that I just shot on the 7D as well. I'll upload it within the week. If you're interested in seeing it, it seems "subscribing" is what all the cool kids are doing these days. :P

  • The shot at 2:09 - How did you go about getting it steady?

  • This question has been answered already.

  • If you are having problems editing the Canon 7D Footage, Google search "Drew Maw Blog", click the first result, then click the latest blog posting.

  • Good work.

  • how many Gb did u use? and how many days did u shot?

  • I have two 32GB CF cards, but I didn't go through one of them for this. This was shot in about 4-6 hours.

  • this amazing, i thought 7D must use a lots of memory cards. When you took the shot, did your camera got hotter and was hang? Because it was happened to my friend!

  • What 32GB CF cards do you use? how fast are they? I've heard of people having problems with larger cards overheating and whatnot.

  • what did you edit on? if FCP, what settings did you use to keep it from glitching?

  • Yes FCP. And by glitching, I'm assuming you're trying to edit the native H.264 files without transcoding to ProRez first?

  • yes that makes sense. Do you know how I can transcode to prorez? Thank you so much!!

  • Google search "Drew Maw Blog" and click the first result. The tutorial is the latest posting.

  • lol just found them

  • Great shots man, I want to grow up to be like you! lol

but really, I just love them what lens did you use on this film?

  • what do you think about the Sigma 24mm 1.8 , great lense ?

  • Oh, it's great. I just shot Blake Griffin for NIKE, and I used it a lot. It's great when you don't have a lot of room, but want to get nice DoF.

  • i forgot why i was here ( which was to have a look at the video quality of 7d) i was immersed in the actual shots and the life they reflected..great work man!

  • Beautiful Drew, Thanks!

  • Awesome vid! This camera intrigues me to no end. Upon release, I was not in the least expecting a DSLR in this price range to perform as well as it does, especially with video. It definitely makes me wonder what 1d MK iV footage will look like. Out of curiosity, how much difference do you think f/ makes with video and these lenses. In particular do you think the difference between the 50mm 1.4 vs 1.8 would be very significant? (haha 1.2 is a bit much right now)

  • Google 50mm 1.4 vs 1.8 :) You're asking large questions that require one's own research.

  • As someone just begining photography may I ask what software editing program you are using to overlay the music to your video? It also says that it was "color corrected". What do you mean by that?

Excellent choice of music by the way. Is synching the music to the vi

    The Meltdownman

  • I use Final Cut Pro 7, which is the Final Cut Studio 3 suite of programs. Only for mac. It's a fairly steep learning curve, but try it out, better late then never. Color correction takes place in FCP, and is almost identical to editing a photo's color in iphoto or photoshop.

  • nice vid.

  • Hi, great work!

    I'd like ask a question:

at 2:13 there is an abberration on the background; why?

    what is it?

  • That is going to be a result of: a combination of FCP's Smoothcam smoothing out rough handheld footage, which suffered from rolling shutter. I didn't treat the footage for rolling shutter before applying smooth cam, because I don't have "The Foundry" "Rolling Shutter" plugin yet.

  • @DrewMaw can u get that with sony vegas? i thought u shot it using some kind of steadycam

  • I've never used Sony Vegas, so I honestly don't know, but nope, i just used my tripod neck as a stablizer, but be rest assured, it was way worse in the raw footage, i.e. before Smoothcam was applied.

  • Great work

  • Nice work, Drew. Is it fare to say you transcoded this into Apple Pro Res upon L&T into FCP?

Would you mind mentioning your export settings as well?

    Cheers,

    Bill

  • export setting are set to "Sequence" in FCP, but I then open that FCP exported .mov in quicktime, whereby I then re-export a quicktime .mov version for web distro.

  • People aren't buying this camera for photos, but for video. And, stop spamming, you idiot fool!

  • I am sorry to offend. I think if you look at Canon's marketing, it is pretty clear that the 7D is being promoted as a photographic tool. You may want to let Canon know that they have created a video camera, not a photographic tool. Why are you on my case, just because I want a better tool?

  • So natural. =)

  • what lens was used at 0:06 ?

  • Tokina 16-50mm

  • how about some fast action shots?

that's the thing i hate about dslr video, unless its on a steadicam, the video comes out looking like crap

  • Google "The Foundry Rolling Shutter". It's an After Effects plugin that can fix rolling shutter in any of your fast moving shots. This is similar to what Hollywood professionals are using to compensate for rolling shutter. I also work at Panavision in Hollywood, and more and more indie films and commercials are being shot with this little camera, in fact, Shane Hurlbut just shot a Nascar commercial on it.

  • Awesome video! Which clips were taken with the 50mm 1.8? Also at 2:10 what did you use to steady the camera on the walking shots?

  • Well, i'm not gonna list all of the shots that were taken with the 50mm, but I'll list a couple of shots for ya: 0:27, 0:30, 1:20, 1:42, and the guy painting on the mirror, among others.

The steady shot was shot with the camera on a tripod. I was holding it at the neck and walking. Trust me though, it looked terrible, but I used "Smoothcam" in Final Cut Pro to smooth it out.

  • Cool. What is the difference between Final Cut Pro's "smoothcam" and the feature in the new iMovie 08?

  • I've never used iMovie before, so I have no idea. I think I remember hearing that it's not as good as FCP's, but that could just be a rumor.

  • dude, for 2:38 specifically what lense did you use, this video looks like film! Awesome work!!!

  • For that long shot of the lifeguard, I used a 100-300mm ƒ5.6 lens @ 300mm at 5.6.

  • @DrewMaw Thanks!

  • Thanks for this editing nice Job. I am switching over to Canon Nikon can't evolve with video so today I made the decision Monday I am going for the 7D and a 50mm F1.4

  • Great work and love the soundtrack; a perfect blend of relaxation!

    Which steadycam unit?

  • No steadicam unit, only a plug-in for FCP 6 called smoothcam. comes with FCP.

  • also, is this Tokina 16-50mm able to fit on the 7D or do you need conversion?

and is it sharp enough to match most of the other choice lenses out there like L series?

  • The Tokina is sharp, I'm not sure about L-Series, but honestly, no one watching a video will be able to tell the difference, imo. Regarding the question of which camera to get, it's tough to say, the 5D will have 24p soon, and the 1D will have insane ISO features. For me, it depends on what lenses or other extraneous features you need. For me, I need an external monitor, shoulder rig, another light kit, another fluid head, slider, follow focus, batteries, a couple 32 gb memory cards, etc, etc...

  • The Tokina is made for the Canon mount EOS series, so no need for a conversion of any sort. As far as sharpness, yes, but I've never used an L series lens.
