I have a sony handycam and i've recoreded videos on it with a mini dvd. When I put the cd into my computer it says that I have a empty disk. Do I need to download a speical software on my computer so, that it will play my dvds?
Have you heard or tried VirtualDub with Deshaker plugin to help stabilize the shaky videos coming from hand held video cameras? If so, could you do a tutorial on how to use it, specifically with the Vado HD? If not, you should check out the video comparisons of before and after using VirtualDub with the Deshaker plugin here on youtube. You may want to use them for your videos.
i bought the same cable but whenever i plug in the cable the computer writes "the device can't be recognized" i tried different ways but all invain , my camera is DCR-HC26, so what is supposed to do?
I have a SONY DCR HC52E camcorder. My laptop is DELL Latitude which has a 4 pin firewire port and Windows 7 OS. I am using windows movie maker to capture the video. But unfortunately my laptop is not detecting my camcorder. Can anybody suggest any remedy or checks ??
This video really helped me with a thing. I´m maybe gonna buy a Canon GL2 (XM2) and I was getting a bit nervous about starting to film with Mini DV instead of HDD.
Do you have windows XP, or 7 or Vista? I've been having trouble with capturing on windows 7, and vista, sometimes on XP as well. It may have to do with the drivers and I lost the CD it came with. Any Ideas?
I've bought 3 cameras but none of them show up in XP, I tried both 4 / 6 pin firewire and in edit mode & with /without power supply. Do you install extra drivers?
@8bennugent Rewind and record. Also make sure on the tape bottom the switch isnt on Save.
If its glitching, you need to get and run a MiniDV head cleaner for 10 seconds to clean the heads. I talk about that a bit in my MiniDv to computer video.
@kingpen408 Yes you do need a firewire. If you dont have one see my video recently uploaded called "How to transfer MiniDV to a computer" and ill tell you what your options are if you dont already have that port.
i have a cord that fits into the camera perfectly but the end is USB, would it still work? I ordered a charger for my camera. It should be in today or tomorrow hopefully.

XP doesn't react (like when I use USB) it says firewire port is working properly but hasn't worked with two minidvs, there's just no reaction-doesn't say "not recognized" I read you don't need extra driver in xp but seems like it does.

OK First open Movie Maker, already deafult program for XP and Vista, and click on "Capture Video from Camcorder" or something like that on the left and the window should pop up! Hope it helped! Tell me if it worked!
is there something wrong with my laptop , when i connect my ipod touch or any thing that has to do with usb , it never recognizes the usb thing i plugged in , i always have to restart my computer in order for it to be recognized!!! why?
so I bought that exact firewire card, and yes, it works fine, the one I got comes with the cable and all for about $7 US. It also comes with video studio 8 (ulead)
I have a question. I have a canon hv40 and adobe premiere cs4 on my computer. When I hook up the cam to my computer with the firewire it recognizes it and starts up adobe. I go to capture video and the screen comes up, but for some reason it only plays back on my camcorder and not on my computer screen. Then when I press record to actually transfer it, it reads that its recording, but actually doesn't after I press stop. It says record error after. Could you help me with my inquire?
The problem with talking about hdot64s and encoding is that the people who understand that are already pretty expert. It would be nice to get that explained so that beginners can understand it.

you can but wmm only takes wmv files so you would have to convert each file to a wmv format while losing quality in the process. i recommend getting an editing program that takes more file formats. adobe premier elements 7 is great, not that expensive. i got the photoshop elements and premier elements package for 149.99 at best buy

probably asking a reallly obvious question but in order to transfer video that you've already captured onto a tape from camcorder to pc, you need te firewire cable? is it possbile to do it via usb? some of the other tutorials claim that it is...some say it isnt
That's a good question. I've only ever done it via firewire, and the camera's manual doesn't say anything about capturing via USB. But I have heard some people say they can capture through the camera's firewire port and a USB port on the computer with a firewire-to-USB cable. Pixela sells one for $120; I think it has a microprocessor to convert firewire data into USB format. But I've seen other similar cables with no micro that sell for a few bucks. I have no idea how/if they work.
@cameratest Ive just ordered the usb version off amazon and hopefull it shall come in a couple of days. I have a Samsung vp-d38i. Do i need to install any type of drives in order for it to work?
sucks that its so dam hard to get video onto your computer, i mean hell, if companies wanted to go down in production price, why not USB, firewire is too expensive
I see, this is a compact VHS camcorder. It doesn't have a firewire output because it's not a digital camera. There are a couple of ways to capture analog video. If you have access to a digital camcorder, you can connect your analog camera to the digital one via RCA cables and record your video onto a miniDV tape and then capture from the miniDV camera. Or you can use an analog capture card in your computer to capture directly from your compact VHS camera.
Thank you so much for this footage...it helped me a lot...please, my computer has a firewire port, but with 4 pins...just like the camera has...If i buy a 4pin-to-4 pin firewire cable it will work? or i still need that capture card? than you
hey nice video but i installed i firewire cable and my computer recgonized it and all but when i plug it into my panasonic gs300 nothing happens. ive also tryed to capture with vegas and the software it comes with but both say there is no device connected. yes i have the camera on playback mode
Hey i just bought a Firewire Port and installed it on my PCI slot. And now im getting the vids from my camcorder (By the way i have a Dcr-Hc28 :)) to my computer. Thanks for the tutorial , P.s i use sony Vegas pro 9.0
Hewlett Packard online help told me that my computer cannot be upgraded to firewire but that a firewall cable from my camcorder can be inserted into an USB port with no loss of video quality. Is this true?
If you have no open spots on your motherboard to install a firewire card, then it is possible that you cannot upgrade to firewire. I have heard several people say there is a USB to firewire cable that you can use, but I've also heard that such a thing is impossible without a microprocessor to convert one signal type to the other. If you are able to capture video with your USB port, let me know how you did it.
thank you your video was very helpful, but i was wondering if you could still use windows ,movie maker with a minidv camcorder and will it still work the same as it does with vegas?
Windows movie maker can capture video but I've never used it. The capture interface probably looks a little different but it should work essentially the same.
This applies to mini DV camcorders. Are you talking about an 8mm or hi8 camera, or mini-VHS? Those are analog cameras and you have to capture the video another way.
The USB cable is for downloading photos on my Sony camera. What do you mean you tried uploading onto WMV? Are you using a video capture program like Sony Vegas? Does the program recognize your camera? Do you get an error message?
I filmed something and I meant to say i tryed uploading the film onto my computer using My USB cable. Since that Didn't work i tryed using my SD card to transfer the memory over to my computer. And when i whent onto Windows Movie Maker And clicked Import from Digital video camera it said it couldn't find any.
Do you have a mini DV camcorder that records video on a tape? If so, then you won't be able to download your videos from the SD card. The SD card is probably just for photos. Windows Movie Maker probably won't recognize your camera because it only detects cameras plugged in via firewire.
i have a question. i have a firewire port and soon im getting my first mini dv camera (ive always had sd card cameras) and i was wondering: how to you import from the mini dv with the harddrive and edit it with vegas? i mean if i already captured a video?
Hopefully this is not too dumb of a question.... is it possible to record straight to the harddrive using the iLink cable? This question is specifically regarding the Sony DCR-HC62 that you're using. Also, have you tried using this cam as a webcam/PC camera? Thanks
No, not that I know of. You need some kind of video capture software to get it from your tape to your hard drive. You need to specify when you want to begin recording and when you want to stop, and that's part of what the capture software does.
hi i have a Toshiba H30 but it doesnt have a firewwire port.. so how would i do it now?? please help!!!

Pixela sells one for $120; I think it has a microprocessor to convert firewire data into USB format. But I've seen other similar cables with no micro that sell for a few bucks. I have no idea how/if they work.

Is it a miniDV camcorder? What camera do you have?
cameratest 2 years ago
yea but i don't think u have heard of it its a jvc gr-axm511
blueboards67 2 years ago
I see, this is a compact VHS camcorder. It doesn't have a firewire output because it's not a digital camera. There are a couple of ways to capture analog video. If you have access to a digital camcorder, you can connect your analog camera to the digital one via RCA cables and record your video onto a miniDV tape and then capture from the miniDV camera. Or you can use an analog capture card in your computer to capture directly from your compact VHS camera.

Thank you so much for this footage...it helped me a lot...please, my computer has a firewire port, but with 4 pins...just like the camera has...If i buy a 4pin-to-4 pin firewire cable it will work? or i still need that capture card? than you

does every mini dv cameras have a firewire cable intachment on them????

Hewlett Packard online help told me that my computer cannot be upgraded to firewire but that a firewall cable from my camcorder can be inserted into an USB port with no loss of video quality. Is this true?
sethian93 2 years ago
If you have no open spots on your motherboard to install a firewire card, then it is possible that you cannot upgrade to firewire. I have heard several people say there is a USB to firewire cable that you can use, but I've also heard that such a thing is impossible without a microprocessor to convert one signal type to the other. If you are able to capture video with your USB port, let me know how you did it.

thank you your video was very helpful, but i was wondering if you could still use windows ,movie maker with a minidv camcorder and will it still work the same as it does with vegas?
vx1000sk8er 2 years ago
Windows movie maker can capture video but I've never used it. The capture interface probably looks a little different but it should work essentially the same.

triplec34 2 years ago
does this work even if the camcorder uses mini tapes to capture film
triplec34 2 years ago
This applies to mini DV camcorders. Are you talking about an 8mm or hi8 camera, or mini-VHS? Those are analog cameras and you have to capture the video another way.
cameratest 2 years ago
can you use wins=dows movie maker
punjabiboy99 2 years ago
Yes, you can use Windows Movie Maker to capture video. I've never used it before myself.

I have A USB Port 2.0 cable. And the 2 ends hook up perfectly to my camera and computer. I try uploading it onto WMV but it won't let me. Any tips?
SkarmoryLvlX 2 years ago
The USB cable is for downloading photos on my Sony camera. What do you mean you tried uploading onto WMV? Are you using a video capture program like Sony Vegas? Does the program recognize your camera? Do you get an error message?
cameratest 2 years ago
I filmed something and I meant to say i tryed uploading the film onto my computer using My USB cable. Since that Didn't work i tryed using my SD card to transfer the memory over to my computer. And when i whent onto Windows Movie Maker And clicked Import from Digital video camera it said it couldn't find any.
SkarmoryLvlX 2 years ago
Do you have a mini DV camcorder that records video on a tape? If so, then you won't be able to download your videos from the SD card. The SD card is probably just for photos. Windows Movie Maker probably won't recognize your camera because it only detects cameras plugged in via firewire.
cameratest 2 years ago
Yes it does record in a tape. So does this mean that i Will have to buy a firewire cable To upload the footage to my computer?
SkarmoryLvlX 2 years ago
Yes, as far as I know that's the only way to do it.
cameratest 2 years ago
do u have to finalize the disc or no?
please answer soon
Skate0003 2 years ago
This tutorial is for miniDV camcorders, which record on a tape and not a disc. I've never had a DVD camcorder before, so I'm not sure.
cameratest 2 years ago
ok thanks
Skate0003 2 years ago
ok i see, sorry didnt watch the whole video first: you click on capture and then play the video back to capture it ok.
p.s.
you said they recommend a compression type of h.264 or mpeg2 is that in quicktime movie (.mov)
plus: if .wmv with 3mbits/s looks good then its fine anyway.
KillingDestiny 2 years ago
i have a question. i have a firewire port and soon im getting my first mini dv camera (ive always had sd card cameras) and i was wondering: how to you import from the mini dv with the harddrive and edit it with vegas? i mean if i already captured a video?
KillingDestiny 2 years ago
Hopefully this is not too dumb of a question.... is it possible to record straight to the harddrive using the iLink cable? This question is specifically regarding the Sony DCR-HC62 that you're using. Also, have you tried using this cam as a webcam/PC camera? Thanks
apureterror 2 years ago
No, not that I know of. You need some kind of video capture software to get it from your tape to your hard drive. You need to specify when you want to begin recording and when you want to stop, and that's part of what the capture software does.
