No kidding. Being atheist doesn't make one "evil" . . . however, all the horrible things d'Orlean pulled (paying off mobs to go after his cousin and his cousin's family; voting for his cousin to be put to death, etc.) are horrible and, indeed, even "evil."
This is a great interview but all three parts should be viewed. Ms. Vidal explains Marie Antoinette had almost no political influence as a young queen, she never said ''Let Them Eat Cake'' and her spending was not quite as bad as most people think. See also her blog, Tea at Trianon, for more information about the real Marie-Antoinette.
I have also read several biographies on Marie Antoinette, and I can't say that I agree with what she is saying. So, I'll just tell all of you what I think of Marie Antoinette.
Marie Antoinette had almost no political influince, mainly because her husband and advisors distrusted her Austrian heritage. Also, she never said ''Let Them Eat Cake'' that was something said by another royal. Though I can't quite recall who it is. Also, her spending was not quite as influintal as most people think.
I hurled with laughter throughout this interview! Le Petit Trianon: 'a little country house'? Ha Ha! Marie Antoinette had no lovers? C'mon! What Count Fersen? She was seeing him only on a platonic basis, right? Marie Antoinette was 16 years old when she was crowned Queen of France, and although she was well educated, she took her clothing, jewlery and parties far more seriously than she did anything else, and that throughout the majority of her reign.
