  • 1) Jussi B. 2) Joseph Schmidt 3) Fritz Wunderlich. Some may want to argue the pecking order but I could care less. All 3 left us this jewel so beautifully sung &, after decades, NO ONE has taken their place.

  • Die ergreifend schlichte Schönheit dieser Stimme ist überwältigend. Ein Tenor so ganz ohne Schmalz. Echte, tief empfundene Musik in goldenem Gewand einer Jahrhundertstimme! Vielen Dank!

  • This aria is exquisitely beautiful. I don't care about bullshit or amusement...beauty is beauty.

  • Splendido! Effettivamente dal citato 2.43, canta in tedesco.

  • Not one of his strongest recordings, so to speak... he sounds rather raspy, but perhaps there's a charm to that aswell. It's a bit surprising though, as Björling practically never sounds labored...

  • @Jaaakob

Well, he was months from death (heart failure) when he recorded this. BTW, it is not a live performance, despite the applause. His song is part of a "gala" inserted into a studio recording of Die Fledermaus.

You are not the first person I've heard comment on the diminished quality of his singing here, but personally, I can't hear it. He sounds much like he always did.

Wunderlich's performance is better for me, but he was younger and healthier when he recorded it.

  • On retrouve des défauts qui ont migré dans les générations suivantes, mais qui ici sonnent comme des qualités:Le paradoxe vocal...

  • This music was composed to amuze people, so it was "popular music", kind of light music, back in the early 20th century. Common people was supposed to enjoy and value this kind of art. If we compare it to today's popular music we will reach the conclusion that Darwin was undoubtedly wrong when he stated the Theory of Evolution, or we are on our way back to the ape status!!!!

  • @PANZERCAMPINO Darwin was right, but you're right about music. Sad, isn't it?

What has become of us? We seem to have lost our way, in many things.

    Bill in Canada

  • If there was ever a tenor (and I repeat, if) to rival Bjorling, it was the incredible Fritz Wunderlich, whose version of this is probably the best.

  • This is Swedish.

  • @Siriusfanatiker It is German from 2:43. Listen.

  • Yes... it's German later, how interesting. Greatly appreciated, who doesn't love Jussi?

  • Is there a version of Jussi singing this in German?

  • He is! Listen to the end!

  • @302MarkVII In German from 2:43.
