then....if that is the case...she shouldn't have....and knowing her...wouldn't have played it....at a couple of points in this performance she is moved to tears...this song obviously is sung from the heart...don't let your perceptions distort the real meaning of nina ......
she hated singing live and did it for the money and said so often
where are the tears here??
In 1987 Nina Simone took exception to the agreed distribution of the royalties from My Baby Just Cares For Me, which had become a belated pop hit, chasing a record executive from a restaurant with a knife.
I am 32 years old and I feel humble to love this woman for her musical genius in a world full of less than mediocre talent. No one has done it like Nina to this day!
Shes not lip synching, Im a lip reader and its a hard thing to fake and miss your spot. If its off, its off. The video just happens to be off track with the sound. Is all
She's lip-synching. Play it at the same time as her original recording in "Jazz As Played..." and it will match identically. I'm not sure why she chose not to sing it herself, but I would guess that because this song marked her comeback, she maybe wanted to make sure she was still singing the exact version people were in love with. A strange moment for her, but it doesn't detract from her brilliance.
no, it's definitely a lip synch. you can see her miss a double chord hit in just before the second "don't care for high-toned places" section -- she just hits once, clearly. sad that they wanted just The Track for broadcast here. but I would certainly guess this was NOT her own choice. besides strange not to have any variety at all from the LP version, or any visible drummer.
I stand corrected it is lip sync TV style - maybe that's why she looks so unhappy while she singing it. Please see my bands video response - that is definitely live!
Actually, looking at the comments here and checking the video again it becomes clear that either the original recording of the song has been overlaid over this live performance, or that Nina's lip/fingersynching along to the track (there's also no visible band) - wonder why - maybe it was the way this particular show handled live performances? Nice to have the interview though!
Grai is right, she's been robbed on this one :(

Shes miming. Every other live version of this she sings it completely different. This is the version released as a single exactly.

I think she may have been in a position where she was press ganged into singing this hit that everyone knew
In fact Nina sold the original publishing rights for $300 and the record company made millions of dollars with her version and kept the money
Maybe this song has bad memories for her so she just went through the motions

to cut a long story short: the whole video is out of sync. video/audio sync is not 100%

She sings so happy yet seems so sad. What year is this? - her voice and playing are damn good!

I agree. Her eyes look sad, but her voice says otherwise...

She did have bipolar disorder, so maybe she was at a low point at the time.
