All these toys don't matter if u want pure performance. I drive a 325 Xi and never use all these things. Even all 'drive-help' is put to rest when i drive the car. Pure driving without any help of computer designed features, thats whats all about. Anyone can drive an (super)car but not everybody can drive a pure car without all kinds of electronic aid
It always makes me laugh when i'm listening to americans reviewing a diesel car.... "it has low enough emitions that it can be sold in all states" .... comes from a country that puts V8's into icecream vans.... diesels are still underrated in US and i guess people there still dont realize that diesel engine is superior to the equally sized petrol engine in every single way.
@Everyday1Normal1Guy 3 series is a small sports saloon, its good if you only want a sporty car... but if you want an executive saloon that will be fun to drive, comfortable, have enough room inside, that will be very luxurious and will feel special, then you gotta look somewhere else. And besides, this is an old car now, its been on market for almost 7 years.
just bought mine last x-mas, had to take it back to dealer as the rear light didn't work. Dealer told me that this is the 2009 323i bmw that he has to order the rear indicating lights for!!! very surprising aye...beautiful car to drive though
I have a 2009 335xi and I love it! I highly reccomend this car. This is my third new BMW, and I can't believe they just keep making them better and better. Super fun car to drive, and lots of power.... manual gearbox is silky smooth.

Not so! The Germans are generally known to be proud and like to target those at the high economic status end (not only in vehicles, also German tools etc are significantly expensive when compared with others that are equally as good or better). No doubt, German vehicles are good (so also are others) but the expenses do not justify their value. Ferraris, Bentleys and Maybachs are also expensive, yet people buy them.
well i know, i mean there's an audience for everything - to me other cars don't give the feeling german ones do, and that's simply it, i drive a german car and pay extra for it, because well .. it's a sort of "passion" thing
@Mrjaguarpaw1 That's what you're telling me; I have learned that over long periods of time, BMW's (etc) quality & durability falls while Japanese vehicles are still good (i.e. the latter are known for their durability & quality over time). The BMW (3 series) is only marginally better than the Lexus IS (10%) in driving dynamics but when technical gadgetry (etc) spec. sophistication & lower cost & maintenance prices are considered, the Lexus outperforms its BMW counterpart.
@7olusegun All right. Let me point out to this. Lexus engine can never compete with BMW engine which is ultimate one. Regarding the driving dynamics even 10% difference is what most drivers are looking for- that is what makes driving experince. Nobody gives a damn to Lexus gadgetry and various toys- driving dynamics that is what we have to talk about.
@Mrjaguarpaw1 Well; to me, I give a damn, I had rather prefer a vehicle with much higher spec than one with lower spec. The Lexus engine is more silent, dependable & also more fuel efficient as it is designed towards perfection. The BMW 3 series is significantly more expensive to maintain than the Lexus. Overall & overtime, it is less value for money than the Lexus IS (more so for its equivalent series with its Lexus equivalents).
The BMW interior is clean and original and contains many elements of the BMWs of yore. The IS interior is derivitive and will remind you that you are in an also-ran car every time you see it.
Also , the new iDrive is amazing and is vastly superior to the lexus system.
test drive a 3 and I assure you, you won't want to get back into your lexus!
Not so! the Lexus is of a much higher technical specification (i.e. more gadgety) than its BMW counterpart and the touch screen system is the best, clearest and more vastly better pleasing to interact with than the iDrive of the BMW. What derivative is the inside of the IS of? When purchasing costs; maintenance costs; gadget technology and reliability, are considered, the Lexus is superior to the BMW. The BMW is only marginally better in driving dynamics and nothing more.
I have experiance of both cars and I assure you the new iDrive system is leagues ahead of the current IS system. Also the 3 series interior is percieveably superir in terms of materials/fit an finish. There are actually more optional 'gadget' available for the 3 series than the IS.
BMW engines are considered 'best in the world' and have many awards to back this up - they are also more technologically advanced than the IS'.
The IS is sub par in terms of drive dynamics with a less technologically advanced suspension system and poorly judged gears ratios to boot, the 3 series is considered to be unmatched in its segment.
Also according to the IDAC survey new BMWs are amoung the most reliable cars in the world.
The 3 series beats the IS by every measure - sorry.

I love the updated version of this vehicle, i own an 08 328xi but i have to say as an owner of a BMW I've gotten better performance and luxury out of other cars I've driven. The BMW is way over rated, everyone on the road owns one!! I've driven an Infiniti G37sedan which i might say is beautiful car, and it has a freakn LCD screen on the car and its not even a Navi system. Needless to say I'm already looking forward into trading my car in.
im currently driving a 2007 328i sedan.......not sure if i like the updated one. i have seen them on the road and havent been that impressed. The stock rims offered with the sport package arent as nice as the model i have. Might be time to get into the coupe when this lease is up at the end of the year
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
the interior looks so crappy compared to an Infinity G37 or even the Audi A4. The driving experience may be good and all, but if I am spending 40k I want the whole package. So bland on the inside. The Screen is still crappy. I am dissapointed. I still love the way it looks though.
What puts a 3 series apart from the competition is the driving experience; It feels exeptionally confortable but when you want to think you are a GT driver the car will deliver lots of fun keeping you (in most cases) on the road. Audi, Mercedes and other high end brands have tryed to copy or reach the same consumer perception for years without success. No matter how the interiors or toys (LCD screen) looks like, 3 series will have its loyal consumer base for a long time based on its reputation
@HumanCronicle Actually, 3 series is a very overrated car. Yes its fun to drive and handles great, but the ride is VERY hard and uncomfortable, theres a lot of noise coming from tires when driving on the bumpy roads, its cramped inside, has a small boot, interior quality and design are worse than in newer competitors, its overpriced and it doesnt feel special. In essence, its a track day kind of car. Fun to drive on a track or on a perfect road, but not especially good at anything else.
@HumanCronicle Any i can see that you havent actually driven the 3 series... same as all the people who thumbed up you comment. Saying that bmw 3 series is exceptionally comfortable is like saying that falling down the stairs is exceptionally comfortable. Its by far the most uncomfortable car in the class because of its sport tuned suspension, hard seats, and run-flat tires. For example, the C class drives almost as good, but its much more comfortable..not to mention some french cars..
My brother drives the 2008 one. I like the tail lights more, but I HATE the design the did on the hood. The previous ones look much sleeker. The hood looks like Chrysler-esque
in the iDrive or in the 335i? My take is that iDrive stands for "information" and the 335i is a throw back to "injection" versus non-injected models. That's the conventional wisdom anyway. I have read that it stands for "inline" for straight inline six, but I have seen V8 five-series cars with i's on them, so I think not.
My 08 E90 puts a big grin on face every day. Love it. BMW drivers and Acura/Infinti/Lexus/Merc/Audi/ Cadi drivers are two totally different crowds. When people realize that we'll be alright. Just buy what you like like suits and cologne.
The most compelling part of this car is that diesel engine. Very impressive power numbers for just a 3 L diesel, but pretty good mileage as well. Plus it has excellent ride and handling, and a good bling factor. It is a fairly good compromise.
One major negative about Roadfly is that they dont really look into the downsides of a car. Even the most amazing show in the world "Top Gear" looks at the bad side of a car. All Roadfly does is read the manual. Very dry
Wow they are bringing diesel and DCT. My only complaint is the paddle shifters on steering wheel is confusing at first. Both paddles are the same- you push it to downshift, pull it to upshift. Most other cars have it better design- left paddle for the downshift, right for upshift. But it's not a biggie - I can always use the shifter in the center console.
Wow I cant wait 2 drive this car now that is what I call the ultimate driving machine. I want it in Manual gears with a 6th gear. Also the new start up mode is cool with the button. 318 to 325 is what I want. LONG LIVE THE BMW
Thank God i didn't buy the 2008 model, i was gunna but i was double minded between this and the Mercedes C-class, but now the new 2009 model of the 3 series have taken me away
I am in the market for this car-Would you try and get a "end of season deal" on an 2008 or spend a little more and buy the 2009? The updates to the boday and the Idrive seem great.
It will probably cost around $3k to $5k more for the 2009 model after you take into account the 2.1% increase in base price, the financing rate (for the 2008 model, BMW is offering 0.9% financing for the 335i and 2.9% for the 328i), and the increased price for options. The refresh does look great though.
I was in the same dilemma. I went with the 2009 328i x, with 3.9%. After 5 years of financing, the difference in cost is really negligible. Plus, the only 08s the local dealership could find on the 2008 3-series coupes were all decked out and fully loaded, so those would have actually been MORE expensive that the 2009, with the options I wanted (granted, there was much more negotiating room on the 08 models).
Check out my viddy if you want to see some details of my 09. Good luck!

Might be time to get into the coupe when this lease is up at the end of the year

the interior looks so crappy compared to an Infinity G37 or even the Audi A4. The driving experience may be good and all, but if I am spending 40k I want the whole package. So bland on the inside. The Screen is still crappy. I am dissapointed. I still love the way it looks though.
fearls1 2 years ago
good that you ain't driving one..cuz you don't deserve to be in it. =) enjoy your infiniti or audi. BMW isn't for you
hsinhunglin 2 years ago
What puts a 3 series apart from the competition is the driving experience; It feels exeptionally confortable but when you want to think you are a GT driver the car will deliver lots of fun keeping you (in most cases) on the road. Audi, Mercedes and other high end brands have tryed to copy or reach the same consumer perception for years without success. No matter how the interiors or toys (LCD screen) looks like, 3 series will have its loyal consumer base for a long time based on its reputation

@HumanCronicle
ive had x2 3 series
they are good.
only 1 thing though....rwd in the wet is a handful...and must be driven with respect.
the grip is there, but can snap and catch you out when your trying to press on.
talking from experiance :)
1521joe 1 year ago
@HumanCronicle Actually, 3 series is a very overrated car. Yes its fun to drive and handles great, but the ride is VERY hard and uncomfortable, theres a lot of noise coming from tires when driving on the bumpy roads, its cramped inside, has a small boot, interior quality and design are worse than in newer competitors, its overpriced and it doesnt feel special. In essence, its a track day kind of car. Fun to drive on a track or on a perfect road, but not especially good at anything else.
derbigpr500 1 year ago
@HumanCronicle Any i can see that you havent actually driven the 3 series... same as all the people who thumbed up you comment. Saying that bmw 3 series is exceptionally comfortable is like saying that falling down the stairs is exceptionally comfortable. Its by far the most uncomfortable car in the class because of its sport tuned suspension, hard seats, and run-flat tires. For example, the C class drives almost as good, but its much more comfortable..not to mention some french cars..

Yes! BMW design seriously went downhill in the 2000s, except for the 3-series coupe, which is magnificently beautiful.

Some say this car is ugly. ARE THEY MAD!
This is one good looking BMW and for me, better looking than the M3 sedan and the C class.
M3, M6, 6 series, z4 and this are the good looking BMW on the market today. The 5 series, M5, 7 series, X5, X6 and X3 are the Ugly ones.

"i" = injection
As in Fuel Injection, this goes back to the mid 80's.
Hope that helps.
samsonevickis 2 years ago
wtf does the "i" stand for
coolpooper 3 years ago
in the iDrive or in the 335i? My take is that iDrive stands for "information" and the 335i is a throw back to "injection" versus non-injected models. That's the conventional wisdom anyway. I have read that it stands for "inline" for straight inline six, but I have seen V8 five-series cars with i's on them, so I think not.
Moosey1789 3 years ago
ya ive seen those x5 v8's that say 4.8i on the side

My 08 E90 puts a big grin on face every day. Love it. BMW drivers and Acura/Infinti/Lexus/Merc/Audi/ Cadi drivers are two totally different crowds. When people realize that we'll be alright. Just buy what you like like suits and cologne.

The new idrive system looks a heck of alot better over the previous one
bimmerfan08 3 years ago

But it's not a biggie - I can always use the shifter in the center console.
inurik 3 years ago
yeah pal, the left - right one combination is the ideal thing

I am in the market for this car-Would you try and get a "end of season deal" on an 2008 or spend a little more and buy the 2009? The updates to the boday and the Idrive seem great.
vstock 3 years ago
It will probably cost around $3k to $5k more for the 2009 model after you take into account the 2.1% increase in base price, the financing rate (for the 2008 model, BMW is offering 0.9% financing for the 335i and 2.9% for the 328i), and the increased price for options. The refresh does look great though.
vloh168 3 years ago
I was in the same dilemma. I went with the 2009 328i x, with 3.9%. After 5 years of financing, the difference in cost is really negligible. Plus, the only 08s the local dealership could find on the 2008 3-series coupes were all decked out and fully loaded, so those would have actually been MORE expensive that the 2009, with the options I wanted (granted, there was much more negotiating room on the 08 models).
Check out my viddy if you want to see some details of my 09. Good luck!
