Even if there were enough instructors to meet the demand for current waiting list student... where the heck are they going to work when they graduate. No one wants to hire new grads... yet floors work short staffed, because no one can hire a new grad because, like every other program out there that teaches to the "TEST", the graduates are unprepared for working in real life!
The GOVERNMENT tells us there is a "nursing shortage" based on unrealistic, idealistic nurse/patient ratios. Hospitals and other facilities aim for staffing levels NO WHERE NEAR what the government assumes is adequate. So, the government's assertion that there is a "nursing shortage" DOES NOT MEAN THERE IS AN OVER-ABUNDANCE OF HIRING going on - ESPECIALLY AMONG NEW GRADS!!! Hospitals don't want to spend $ training new grads, so they demand experienced nurses only.
We ARE training nurses in the United States. I'm graduating in December and the job outlook for the new grads= bleak and competitive. There are plenty of jobs, but hospitals want experience. They don't want new graduates. There's the problem. There is a shortage of EXPERIENCED nurses. I really feel hospitals should just give us a chance. We can at least help close the gap.
people you have the internet at your finger tips there are many scholarships available research them! ask your school ask your community! there are funds available to everyone!
HA HA HA...Nursing shortage?????? Just ask all the new grads that cannot get a job! thousands invested years of school and no job when your done. If you only have an AA degree its even harder! there is a shortage of facilities that will hire new graduates thats where the shortage is.
@amie035 your market must be flooded with nurses then because there are huge areas that do not have nurses in the united states.. maybe that person should move to a place where there are no nurses. My area has numerous openings open
NOT SO FAST, PEOPLE. I saw the C-Span version where Kathleen Sebelius stated that there will be funding for nursing students ONLY for minorities. Tell me why that's fair?? If there is a shortage why can't anybody apply??
Nursing school is tough. A lot of students don't make it. I think someone comment that they shouldn't make it as hard or complicated. Well, I disagree. Nurses should know what they are doing and should be able to think independently. Making it easier would allow people with less skill and knowledge , to actually take care of people. I wan't a nurse who knows what they are doing if I was ill. Making it easier would only cause more problems...bad idea. Try harder in school and you'll pass.
I am not a minority and you are right...there are no funds available for me. I will have to work really hard and pay for everything up-front and all the while I will be taxed to death to help pay for the minorities that ARE receiving the funds.
However, since the birth rates for minorities especially illegal aliens that breach our borders is much higher; I will very soon be a minority myself....Wonder if they will pay for me then?
Very true that nurses are short, however, as a student that is going to nursing school it's very hard to get through the program. I wish that the program shouldn't be as complicated as its made out to be. maybe then we wouldn't have have such high shortages.
In the San Francisco Bay Area, acute care hospital RNs can earn $100,000 or more per year, while nursing instructors are paid only about $65,000 per year. No wonder there is a shortage of nursing instructors, this limits the number of student nurses that can be admitted to nursing schools... and the nursing shortage continues.

FUCK OFF... OBAMA...... "U NEED TO IMPORT NURSES" WAKE UP.... YOUR HEALTH CARE SYSTEM IS DECLINING.
alcantara013 4 months ago
I know of no place where there is a "glut" of nurses. Importing of nurses is one of the only solutions there is to offset the coming shortage.
dadinator2006 6 months ago
someone should tell this jive turkey there is no shortage only glut. Importing nurses makes it harder for US born nurses to get jobs.

The program is very tough and very limited. Many of the classes I need to take just aren't available.

uhm.. I think what he meant is that we can train some of the undocumented to cover some of the nursing shortage..

I'm shocked! I found something where I agree with Obama!
I'm just concerned that any plan he has that will improve nursing education here will have enough pork to negate any benefits to it.
