  • One of my ALL time favourite songs by Kate: I love the original so much, and yet the sadness in this version is so powerful, such a mature performance.

And the production on her vocal here is unlike any of the other tracks on Director's Cut: it's very bare, with no reverb or layering, so it feels so naked.

  • this version is absolutely precious.

  • Piękna, z przejmująco docierającym głosem..

  • This makes up for the new version of Deeper Understanding.

  • I absolutely love the original recording but there is something so beautiful and raw about this one. I love it.

  • She has aged beautifully!

  • I was never that bothered about this track on the original, but this version actually makes me cry :) the best reworked track, I think!

  • In retrospect, the first version of this song sounds almost upbeat when compared to the Director's Cut which is devastating in its sadness and finality.Kate's age surely affect her interpretation this time - when you're young and your heart is broken, there's still love out there somewhere for you. But in this version you get the feeling that she's looking back over her life, and "never" really means never. In any case I love Kate, and this version is now one of my favorites of all her songs.

  • .enchanting.

  • Kate.........................

  • I love the intro she added to the song here, but I do prefer the original vocally, still, this and This Woman's Work are about the only good reworkings in Director's Cut.

  • This song is so tragically beautiful. I loved the original composition but this version has replaced that one for me becuase its so bare and raw. The scenario is so sad - a loss - that this song captures the resignation of knowing 'it will never be mine'. A masterpiece. Only Kate can smite our souls like this. One of best songs - can the loss of a lover ever be expressed more beautifully?

  • I really like this new version! She has a slightly deeper voice nowadays and it suits this song a lot in my opinion.

  • i much prefer this version over the original, the sensual world version is dull and forgettable, for some reason this version makes the lyrics more poinient i love the "but looking back over my shoulder, you're happy without me" line, i just think the music matches the lyrics more in this version

  • The original was brilliant but this version is also amazing !

  • all these comments:- "blah blah blah"

  • The original version is, was, and will always be the very best. This new recording is so loose and flat, it almost sounds like an early demo.

  • Wonderful.. Have admired her for years..

    Thanks for posting!

  • Its nice :) me loikes

  • @wb64 I do not agree that you were wrong in 1989. The song was perfect then, for people that were 22 years younger (we) than we are now. We have matured, so has Kate, and I think it is pure genious that she has matured the song for us to present time (2011). Besides that I have never heard better Kate Bush covers than the ones she has done by herself now. Apparently it takes Kate to make the most beautfull Kate Bush covers. Sorry, no offence meant to Within Temptation or to Utah Saints.

  • @bridgewatching Totally agree. I love DC. I love what Kate does. This song is even better for me now as Kate hasrefined it and the omission ofthe Ulian Pipes which at first I missed feels right - the mournful sound of the Trio Bulgarka stands out now. This song is about grief; the place between reality and fantasy and where we sadly realise that we have to let them go .....its very sad. Kate has such compassion and it shows because she is very sensitive with her craft and how she expresses it. X

  • I can't get this new version out of my head....it's amazing

  • @runestave well, get it out fast before it damages you.

  • ANNOTHER new Kate Bush album due in November!!! XD #EPIC omg *faints* haha

  • I like the new key.

  • wow

    love the outfit sexy

free at last, free at last

  • When you here it again after an absense - you forget the original. This version stands out. Both versions are very beautiful - this one affects me more now. If you've ever been in love and lost your lover - you'll know how it feels. Its one of Kate's finest songs because its so complete. Its a masterpiece. Kate is such a perceptive soul - it shows. This song always makes cry. Its very special. Bravo Kate!!!

  • j'aimais cette chanson dans sa première version, celle ci est belle aussi, différente Kate Bush est un être humain et une artiste, sa vie a changé et sa voix aussi, bravo de revisiter ces chansons, pourtant à quand un prochain album original. KB est un génie

  • I love 0:00-0:20!! It's wonderful!!

  • it feels like something that you can't really understand when you're young, but when we're older and we worry about things diffently, and about different things, then you can understand it. it made me feel really young and ignorant like a child, like when grownups talked about things that you didnt understand cos you were too young

  • i played this album when my parents went out on my stereo system, the beggining of this song sent shivers down my spine as soon as i heard that 'twangy' bass part at 0:13, it made me think, kates back... real music is back!!

  • This version replaced the original one for me - and I'd loved the original from the moment I heard it in 1989. Its a very sad song. This version allows the Trio Bulgarka to stand out too and I'd say its still as moving as the original. I first missed the Uilean Pipes on the new version as they give a mournful quality, but I think the sparcity in this one is very affecting. It is just a desperately sad song.

  • The beginning of the song at 0:13 where you can hear the bass twang, as soon as heard it i thought, yes, kates back!

  • Much prefer the instrumentation, though for me, the chorus vocal doesn't sound as impassioned, nor as irrationally, emotively abandoned, confused and resigned as it did. It's amazing to realise though: we're talking degrees, nuances of brilliance here.

  • God! I love that woman.

  • @usergently.well,thank you very much.Regards.KB

  • Ah, Kate, to know that you will 'never be mine'...

....makes me get out of the house in the morning

  • BEAUTIFUL. Simply beautful and desperately sad. Hard not to cry.

  • I think this is gorgeous. i used to play the s*#t out of this album. and i know my ear is used to hearing this song only one way but truly this song - this interpretation - is so right.

  • she captures the feeling of exquisite pain, always makes me feel 'a bit faraway'

  • I loved the old version but I like this one even better. It's a great song.

  • She can not do anything wrong. It is great to hear her voice again, no matter what it is she sings.

  • none of these songs are better than the originals, i don,t think they were meant to be, it,s just good to add them to your collection and enjoy them for what they are.

  • I was a bit horrified at first - but once I got used to her new voice (& it's not that different) I loved the whole album.

  • I can't stop listening to this.

  • This is what I want over and over again!

  • Ok, not bad, but what was wrong with the original version? What disturbs me here is the bad vocal equalizing... it sounds as if she would lisp... and second: she avoids singing the original high notes, taking away much of the typical artistry that was so typical for her.

  • @marmissf Dude she's 53, she's not going to sing those high notes anymore. Think of "Director's Cut" as a live version of these songs in 2011.

  • @marmissf I'll gladly take KB working within a half octave range over any girl singer working in the pop realm today.

  • Brilliant, I absolutely love it.

  • This new version is more desperate than the original, and the maturity of Kate's voice adds to the song something tragic and hauntingly beautiful.

  • Excellent production

  • 'Never Be Mine' was originally one of my favourite tracks from 'The Sensual World' back in 89'. This version is good too, more paired down, but more disjointed too and a little less atmospheric. It's a different more contemporary take on the song, but I still prefer the original.

  • i hated this version when i first heard it. but now i like it more with each listen.

  • superb, i love this, i can't get through the whole of director's cut without getting through at least half a box of tissues, i love this song, thanks so much for uploading this x

  • Not possible to listen to it without tears. Kate is such a genius, so inspired and perceptive. Such sadness and almost resignation - wanting something you can never have. Very sad indeed. Kudos to Kate for being such a unique artist and making music from the heart XXXXXXXXX

  • beautiful comment, dreamvue. well said. oxoxoxoox

  • This song hurts more the second time than it did the first. I know this feeling now, it's a page out of the book of my life . Beautiful Kate...

  • This song does something to me that I can't describe in words...

  • I emntioned this with "Song of Solomn" I like the old version but this new version is really cool too. I really loved Sensual World and Red Shoes, but having two versions of these song and new versions that are fresh and very cool too makes me happy. This wone will take a few listenings but it adds new depths to this.

  • Don't understand how you can not like this new version - absolutely gorgeous and flawless - thank you Kate! <3

  • This version is amazing, even better than the original! im all teary lmao :P well done Kate :D

  • I think this is one of the best new versions. Much as I appreciate the Trio Bulgarka and uilleann pipes, they do dominate the original and get on my nerves a little bit after repeated listening. To me this sounds more personal, spacious, haunting, mysterious and funkier. Like the song belongs more to Kate now than Davy Spillane and the Trio.

  • Dislike. Loved the Uilleann pipes in the original - their yearning quality merged with the vocal in a magical way. This song has really lost something. A pointless remake.

  • Love it.

  • BEAUTIFUL!!! Even more moving than the original!! GENIUS Kate XXXXX

  • AWESOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
