Guys guys........That wasn't a conventional deadlift. That deadlift was much closer to a snatch deadlift than a normal clean deadlift hence why it looks heavier. Go to the gym and try to deadlift 400lbs with a wide grip.........it is very very hard even if you deadlift 500lbs.
I think this is the first time I've seen any of the Cali Strength guys going heavy on deadlift. How often to you have them train the deadlift? Is there any reason why Oly lifters shouldn't go heavy on them that often?
You can tell how efficient Donny is with his cleans. That 462 looked heavy on the clean pulls, but he can clean that. Whereas a novice like me can clean pull about 75 lbs more than I can clean and that's about a 150% difference.
@marshalljman big cash money says Donny can stand up with way, way more than 462. If you're a weightlifter who goes really heavy on deadlifts regularly then you run the risk of messing up your technique. Donnie's using just enough weight to where he can still keep the same kind of upright back angle you need for a good Clean. When you Deadlift really heavy you don't keep that kind of upright back angle. Compare Donny's back angle to Ronnie Coleman's.
@ptarleton you pull the bar off the floor with the back angle pre-determined by how you were built. Not going heavy on something because it means you'll have to change your form but will get stronger makes no sense
@tubermann1 Shot Putters do most of their throws with the 16lb shot, not the overweight 20. Sprinters do most of their sprint training without sleds or parachutes. The way your body moves when you do fast stuff is different than it is when you do heavy stuff. You are also simply wrong about back angle.
@ptarleton Bill Starr would disagree as he use to deadlift regularly while he was still training as an Olympic Weightlifter and attended Powerlifting meets.
@kariido1 he switched from oly meets to power meets. he's known to have said that not deadlifting was how he brought up his deadlift. you clean 165lbs, so who cares what you say. most men who have never lifted weights are stronger than you.
@ptarleton Deadlifts aren't just for Powerlifters By Bill Starr (google it)
Yes, I do Power Clean 165 in crude form. I have just recently started lifting weights, but I digress. How is this relevant to the topic in any fashion? Please refrain from posting while on your cycle, it's pathetic.
I WANT TO GO TO YOUR GYM.

@ptarleton well..if he can clean 462, i'm going to guarantee that he could deadlift way more than that.

@marshalljman The first pull is always slow not meant to be pulled fast, the speed doesnt come until you start the second pull
