The only crucial item I want of a good size in my dorm room is a bookshelf. A nice tall and wide one. The type that can hold those over sized encyclopedias.

lol... no college dorm looks like that. In your room you'll probably have a single WALL of posters, a mediocre carpet, and color coordinated bedsheets. Maybe a few ornamental wall hangings but don't expect much. You'll be too busy studying.
