It is NOT rare, for these Blue Jay's, to be mobbing this Hawk. Blue Jay's, are in the same family as Crow's, called "Corvids". There EXTREMELY intelligent birds, and can rival some parrot species, as far as there "smarts" go. So this is very common behavior, there often called the "sentinel's" of the bird world. Because of there immediate reactions, towards predators. Crow's are exactly the same, the Jay's just beat them to the punch in this case......
