Both of these cars were horribly outdated by 1977. I'm surprised the Pinto lasted until 1980. Ugly, under-equipped jokes on 4-wheels. A Chevy Nova or a VW Rabbit were better "small car" deals then, and for just a little bit more cash. Who bought a Gremlin or Pinto in '77? These cars were already 8-years old.
@generalfuckpants I miss the 70's but i don't miss this car. Ugliest car ever next to the pontiac aztec. Ewwwww. if u get rear ended the car burst into flames i heard. no thank u. but i do like the gremlins movie.
No matter how you "tried" to dress this car up, you could'nt make it look nice. This was one butt ugly car. If you had one now , many heads would turn.
@neatoauctions There was no 79 Gremlin. Last year for the Gremlin was 78. In 79, it was called the Spirit. It has a different front end and there was a sedan version(which had the trademark Gremlin rear look) and a hatchback which I still think is one of the nicest looking AMCs.
In 1979 I rented a bright orange '79 Gremlin with a straight-six, and over the 3 days, beat the living piss out of it. I was very impressed by how the car handled and held up to the torture.
A friend of mine had an AMC Hornet around this time, and it was a nice little dependable car. And back in those days, people didn't have the exorbitant tastes that people have today. I guess that's why the sh-t hit the fan.
Pinto....Gremlin...Vega....heck, a Datsun or a Civic....anything's better than the "Smart" car (which is also the dumbest name for a car I've heard)! They'll be mocked much more than the others I mentioned in 30 years time....just wait and see! At least the Gremlin is sorta retro-kitsch cool. "Smart" is plain sad.
@MattTheSaiyan A major issue with the Smart is the fact that they cheaped out on the motor. The eroupean version has the Mercedez motor. The USA version has the Mitsubishi motor. Also Smart has almost zero for a dealer network in this country.
AMC Gremlin ad 34 Reminds me of another commercial... somehow, from 1970-71. A cigar smoking, portly fella, big city 'mafia type' (or so) and his cheap dumb blonde, talking to a car sellsman says "What if I ain't willin' to go that low?" The salesman, intimidated says he has no choice. Seems like this might have been either AMC or VW. Anybody remember that one?
My brothers & I had some Made in Japan toy cars when we were kids in the 50's & we took them apart like you do. Some of them were made of old Schlitz & Hamms beer cans-- they didn't bother to melt them down-they just turned them inside out & stamped put the toys!
@NYKID10014 Chrysler bought them from Renault in 1987, mainly for their Jeep division. They became Chrysler's short lived Eagle division, but were phased out in 1999.
@NYKID10014 they got bought out by Chrysler and were turned into eagle and then they were dismantled. but Jeep is still around which was owned by AMC and bought by Chrysler too
@accordguy0325 : If you made $8.00 / hr back in '77 - you were UPPER middle class. I started working in '76 and minimum wage was $2.65. And when i wanted to buy a new Buick in '79 for $5,899. my parents thought I was insane - 'cause it was 'way too much money' for a car.
@jakesaintsrow123 : yes, as my memory recalls it was a black on black '79 LeSabre Coupe .. swanky for the price - but my parents said "no". I ended up buying a used '77 Nova Rally instead. $3,499.00 ! Not bad for a 2 yr old used car back then.
Just think people actually walked into dealerships test drove those and then took money and purchased Gremlins. When they got home they had to break the news to the rest of the family so they could share in the shame.
I thought this was gonna be a car commercial before i clicked the ad. When i saw the video all i saw was a bunch of guys in white suits poking and prodding a giant log of shit.
That's... not how head-on collisions work. When the cars collide, they stop, but the drivers have inertia and continue forward just like any other car. You and the opposing car's driver would be ejected out the front windshield, not the rear hatches of your cars.
@StoneCold75 and I invite you to stop making yourself look like an idiot with those retarded comments; if you think you'd be thrown backwards in a head-on collision, you are totally fucked in the head.
@StoneCold75 :You have absolutely no idea of what happens in head ons. I used to run a test lab for automotive seating. In a case the car is hit from the rear, yes, maybe someone could be ejected out the back.
Would you like to sell or buy this car? Looking for some info about it? Or maybe just bought one? So share your happiness or experiance about it with all of us ;) Create fanclubs, upload pictures, videos, ask for some help about your car if it's something wrong with it.
I don't see why people put down the Gremlin so much. I thought people generally cheered for the underdog? When you think about it, Chevy RUSHED the Vega into production. Silicone lined cylinder walls??? Those things burned more oil than gas!
Pinto??? Rushed into production..... KABOOOM!!! Need I say more?
The Gremlin is based on the Hornet chassis which was re-engineered from the Rambler American platform. AMC spent many years developing it as they knew it'd be their bread and butter!
The 199, 232 and 258 sixes were a seven main bearing engine and let's not forget that AMC was Nash and Hudson - the KINGS of 6-cylinder automobiles. AMC knew a thing or two about sixes! The 232 with a 2-barrel at the time had more power than any other six on the market....that's 155 h.p. That's almost the same power as a 283 Chev, 289 Ford or 273 Chrysler - and those are V8's!!!
The AMC sixes got better mileage than all it's competitors too, despite displacing more.
Uh... Gremlin was an unfinished car with that rear cut. The rear is so stupid. that sick diagonal from roof to bumper. Would be better if they'd advice it like "AMC Gremlin, buy on 2 pieces, Diagonal Under and Diagonal after when u got some more money." They had to learn from VW, Mini or Fiat to make a REALLY good design on hatchback, not that crap.
LOl learn from Fiat!!! or you serious??? Fiat back then made the biggest piece of shits on the market cars so bad they could only sell the designs to eastern block countries. The yugo? Yep thats a fiat.
I love the Gremlin. When I see a vintage one in the street, I almost chase it, to look at it some more and capture some of my childhood back. They were part of the scenery in the 70s. *sighs*
My one and only new car was a 1973 Gremlin. It lasted 8 years and was still running when I sold it. It had a 232, 3 speed transmission, 22 gallon gas tank,8 track tape player, and was yellow with orange stripes. I paid $2,200 for it with $400 down, a monthly payment of $53.00 for three years. I drove it all over the US and made a trip to Quebec in it. I loved that car and one day I will own another. Sweet memories!
@Fruth37 I would have totally bought it from you if you still had it. (I'm assuming you sold it) Although, I probably would make some minor tweaks to it, like taking out the 8 track player and putting a CD player in it instead (if they're compatible, technology wise) but I would keep the 8 track player for re-installation later on.
@Fruth37 I just bought earlier this year a 1973 Gremlin X Levi's in Calgary AB. She's a 232 I^, 3spd auto. It only had 33,000 miles and never seen a winter. I'm restoring it to as close to stock as I can, love the little car. Turns more heads than my brother's '83 Z28 that he's put 10-20 grand into.
The motor wasn't bad...it was the transmision that wasn't syncronized.
The AMC Audi engine was the same one in the Porsche 924's but with a carburator instead of the fuel injection.
Sadly, the mounted it to a Mercury Bobcat transmission and first was really powerful and fast off the lights, but second was a huge gear ratio jump and the car would bog out no matter how many revvs were on the Tach.
I've got a '70 Gremlin and it's been one of the most reliable cars I've ever owned. Returns great fuel mileage and is a scream to drive. Draws attention wherever it goes. Even with manual drum brakes, it's not hard to stop a barely 2,500 lb car. My only qualm would be it's tendency to swap ends under heard braking.
I own a 1977 Gremlin with the 4 Cylander Audi in it. A rare feature in those years. It was designed to compete in the Gas Crunch of the 1970's.
The car handles well and i never found it to be a "death Trap", like was mentioned below. I've owned the car since the mid 1990's and I still do, although the Audi motor needs some fixing.
Wow, that must have been glacially slow with that Audi 4 banger. I found it funny when I read that the 4 cylinder was an extra cost engine over the 232, pay more cash for a smaller engine lol
when I was a young ladd my best friends girl friend had one of these, new. What a death trap. Just riding in it you felt vulnerable like you were in a cardboard box going down the highway. Since the back was short, almost flush to the rear window....if you got rear ended in this thing....you would be toast.
to chinasherry1961: yeh these were horrible. As to your comment about how japanese cars started to take over because of junk like this......I remember a friend of mine bought a new toyata in about 1973 or 74. A bunch of us were standing around it commenting on how well built it looked, how all the body seams were so even. I think he paid around $2,800 or possibly less....does that price sound right?
While Japanese cars in the 70's were mechanically solid and reliable for the most part, they also had to be the biggest rust buckets on the road. The quality of the sheet metal that went into assembling Japanese cars back then was god awful.
@thunderstruck665 You're right there. My stepbrother had a Honda Prelude. It had cancer so bad, i advised him to tear off the sharp, jagged edges of sheet metal, so it couldn't slice someone. The driver's seat collapsed from metal fatigue. Ran good, have to say, but what good is a drivetrain, when the car it's in falls apart?
@soco13466: Seemed to happen to Hondas the worst although Datsun was a close second. Toyotas seemed to be a bit sturdier in build quality although not by much. In the Dominican Republic, old Toyota Corollas are a dime a dozen. They just keep going forever. They go so far as to use duct tape to help hold them together if necessary.
I drove my 77 orange Gremlin for several years. Installed a fm converter because it only came with an AM radio. Mine was orange with gold stripes on the side...graduated high school driving it and drove away in it '1982 when I got .
The Gremlin was a really good car for the times. 23-25 mpg and decent acceleration. Plus they didn't rust out here in the South compared to the same generation Hondas and Toyotas.
I had a 1972 Gremlin X 258, while it wasn't so hot in snow,as most rear wheel drive cars are bad in snow, that car got better gas milage than my wifes camry today, never had any problems with that 258
If you want to commit suicide, drive cars of this brand. Even 1980s AMC had their gasoline tanks in the lateral parts of their body, just behind the covering.
Brought our first baby home in a yellow gremlin. I had to sit in the back and the baby in the car seat in the front because their was no room for it in the back. Great little car, though. Could really plow through the snow.
....which can be fixed with shorter bumper bolts. it was '74-78 that had that problem because of the bumper bolts puncturing the gas tank. the whole thing was blown out of proportion.
This is great! I owned a Gremlin from 1983-1984. My friend owned a Pinto... he always bragged about how his car was more aerodynamic than mine (???). Too bad we would have exploded in his car if someone would have rear-ended us. LOL
AMC...ahhhhhhhh yes. My first car was a 76 Pacer. 3 speed manual transmission, but AMC was doing some pretty innovative things with cars back then. Really, ahead of their time.
I had a 1975 Gremlin. It was my first car in 1979. The car was a piece of shit! It had a mysterious ignition problem that could never be diagnosed. The car would suddenly stop running and wouln't start for hours. I sold it to a used car lot for $900.

DiscoKat 3 years ago
I own a 1977 Gremlin with the 4 Cylander Audi in it. A rare feature in those years. It was designed to compete in the Gas Crunch of the 1970's.
The car handles well and i never found it to be a "death Trap", like was mentioned below. I've owned the car since the mid 1990's and I still do, although the Audi motor needs some fixing.
madcapromanian 3 years ago
I have been in a gremlin x it was well built and fast. I don't know what crack the people below were smoking.
Lumotaku 3 years ago
Wow, that must have been glacially slow with that Audi 4 banger. I found it funny when I read that the 4 cylinder was an extra cost engine over the 232, pay more cash for a smaller engine lol
Infinitrium 2 years ago
when I was a young ladd my best friends girl friend had one of these, new. What a death trap. Just riding in it you felt vulnerable like you were in a cardboard box going down the highway. Since the back was short, almost flush to the rear window....if you got rear ended in this thing....you would be toast.

Good thing it was so easy to work on as it was put together by a bunch of stoned, over-paid beer belly people.

Also, Gremlin didn't share the Pinto's tendency to explode into a ball of shrapnel and flame.

one of the 10 worst cars ever made no wonder Japanese cars took over the US market
chinasherry1961 3 years ago 4
to chinasherry1961: yeh these were horrible. As to your comment about how japanese cars started to take over because of junk like this......I remember a friend of mine bought a new toyata in about 1973 or 74. A bunch of us were standing around it commenting on how well built it looked, how all the body seams were so even. I think he paid around $2,800 or possibly less....does that price sound right?
inkey2 3 years ago
While Japanese cars in the 70's were mechanically solid and reliable for the most part, they also had to be the biggest rust buckets on the road. The quality of the sheet metal that went into assembling Japanese cars back then was god awful.
thunderstruck665 2 years ago 15
@thunderstruck665 You're right there. My stepbrother had a Honda Prelude. It had cancer so bad, i advised him to tear off the sharp, jagged edges of sheet metal, so it couldn't slice someone. The driver's seat collapsed from metal fatigue. Ran good, have to say, but what good is a drivetrain, when the car it's in falls apart?
soco13466 1 year ago
@soco13466: Seemed to happen to Hondas the worst although Datsun was a close second. Toyotas seemed to be a bit sturdier in build quality although not by much. In the Dominican Republic, old Toyota Corollas are a dime a dozen. They just keep going forever. They go so far as to use duct tape to help hold them together if necessary.
thunderstruck665 1 year ago
@thunderstruck665
That is pretty much true and still is some what today.
You can find 80's Camaros and Firebirds all the time with almost no rust but finding an AE86 or classic 280Z with none is difficult.
It's also a big issue with VWs as well.

I drove my 77 orange Gremlin for several years. Installed a fm converter because it only came with an AM radio. Mine was orange with gold stripes on the side...graduated high school driving it and drove away in it '1982 when I got .

At least 70s cars could make you laugh. These tall SUVs today are so serious (and cause serious environmental damage).

USA. AMC, which no longer exists, stands for American Motors Corporation.

I'd rather buy a Pacer. Like the one featured in "Wayne's World."

At least it didn't explode like the Vega or Pinto.

Whew! Finally a car I can afford.
auaiao9 3 years ago
The Gremlin was a really good car for the times. 23-25 mpg and decent acceleration. Plus they didn't rust out here in the South compared to the same generation Hondas and Toyotas.

One feature of the Pinto was overlooked. If rear-ended, It doubled as a fiery bomb.

Well, looking at the silver lining, at least no one would dare tailgate you if you were driving a Pinto.
Watcher3223 3 years ago 2
both of those cars are so ugly they're cool.
leiney83 3 years ago 3
I had a 1972 Gremlin X 258, while it wasn't so hot in snow,as most rear wheel drive cars are bad in snow, that car got better gas milage than my wifes camry today, never had any problems with that 258
striker3 3 years ago
If you want to commit suicide, drive cars of this brand. Even 1980s AMC had their gasoline tanks in the lateral parts of their body, just behind the covering.
ichmalealsobinich 3 years ago
Would like to have both cars today.
tokyofreaky 4 years ago
Brought our first baby home in a yellow gremlin. I had to sit in the back and the baby in the car seat in the front because their was no room for it in the back. Great little car, though. Could really plow through the snow.
meekandquiet 4 years ago
Both cars suck, but if I had to choose, I'd get a Gremlin.
Pinto ignited flames when in a rear end collision, Gremlin didn't (to my knowledge).
jriley1992 4 years ago
....which can be fixed with shorter bumper bolts. it was '74-78 that had that problem because of the bumper bolts puncturing the gas tank. the whole thing was blown out of proportion.

They are both ugly But I would love to have one.

Wow--the car that was actually designed on an air sickness bag by AMC drafters flying together.

...and Gremlin come with an ever so cool gas cap too!
boogiewoman303 4 years ago
This is great! I owned a Gremlin from 1983-1984. My friend owned a Pinto... he always bragged about how his car was more aerodynamic than mine (???). Too bad we would have exploded in his car if someone would have rear-ended us. LOL
atldvdsolutions 4 years ago
AMC had nothing to do with Jeep during
WW2. THey didn't own them until I think 1970.;
Also who in their right mind would want a VW Bug over a Gremlin. I've driven both, you
would have to be a moron.
droww1 4 years ago
$2999 in 1977 was a lot of money. You could have bought a VW bug for about the same and had an import that was better built.
texan176 4 years ago
thats why the pinto is in the top 100 cars and the gremlin is in the top 10 worst cars right?
ficklefackle 4 years ago
it also doesn't spontainiously combust uppon rear end collisions
ChevRcr454 4 years ago
I had a gremlinx with a six cyl and a three speed-- very fast, with pick-up speed.I'd take it anyday over a kia or neon.

At first i thought they were ugly my dad loves them..they suck in red..red isnt there colour but seriously there cool il cars id love to have 1!

AMC...ahhhhhhhh yes. My first car was a 76 Pacer. 3 speed manual transmission, but AMC was doing some pretty innovative things with cars back then. Really, ahead of their time.

Great ad for a simple and neat car! With a six-cylinder in this baby .. it was fast (and cheap to buy and run)!
v8fish67 4 years ago 2
Didn't the Gremlin require the entire engine be dropped out of the chassis to replace the one spark plug?
stevel738 4 years ago
only on the V8; it was a tight fit, but not nearly as bad as a maverick or vega.
listlesssleeper 4 years ago

I'm still gonna hold off for the Toyota Aygo... or maybe one of those small Chevys that they just showed off at that car show.

Think about it - a Toyota Corolla sized car with the space easily for a massive V8...
joh2 4 years ago
I had a 1975 Gremlin. It was my first car in 1979. The car was a piece of shit! It had a mysterious ignition problem that could never be diagnosed. The car would suddenly stop running and wouln't start for hours. I sold it to a used car lot for $900.
