When you said there are most likely more planets like earth. I immediately thought of Gliese581 D. It looks alot like Earth, and is in the goldilocks zone.
You forgot to mention that about 99% of astronauts are in the military, so that's pretty much a prerequisite to becoming an astronaut. NASA is a military administrative organization.
SETI was created to eavesdrop on terrestrial communications. They monitor a billion channels just in the tiny slice of EM spectrum that we use for communication. Every signal SETI has decrypted to date has been terrestrial in origin.
Just wanted you to know I Just sat here and watched all of your "Kids Questions" videos with my space-obsessed 5 year old nephew. He was enthralled with the way you explained things. When I went to show him another video about space he yelled, "NO! I only want the guy in the red shirt!" haha. Thank you for making science interesting. We made a homemade Space Camp bank last month and he has been saving up. I think we may have a little astronaut on our hands. :)
Hi, what would be the affects on earth if we got hit by a mass coronal ejection? if it was strong enough to penetrate the ionesphere would gamma rays give us radiation, or would it simply just knock out all our electronics? and is this possible it could happen?. thanx friendly guy.
What?! He wasn't teached in school about other planets in solar system? After 1995 astronomers found other planets?!!!! Gimme a gun, I'll shoot myself!
cool, he's Harald Lesch's younger brother ?! 5***** >>Harald Lesch, Prof. d. Astrophysik, Observatorium München , Moderator v."spacenight" Radio Bayern
And Sedna. And Charon! And Ceres. Ceres was considered a planet once, then it was discovered that it was the largest member of a belt of objects, called "asteroids." Same EXACT thing happened to Pluto.
If anyone still "thinks" Pluto is a planet, they HAVE to concede that Ceres is one too.
And since Pluto and Charon both revolve around a common center of gravity, you can't regard either as the true dominant body; they'd have to consider Charon a planet too.
Every area of science can be exciting, like chemistry is absolutely amazing to me, but most people say "eww" well I tell them my program. It's about relating it to the audience and you TheBadAstronomer can relate Astronomy well.
Scientists estimate that their are more than 400 billion stars in our galaxy and that their may be almost a trillion galaxies. The sun is a very average star ( small for a star and fine tuned for life, but average ).
I really love your talking shows on youtube, sadly it's not being watched that much and if you compare to other video's on youtube you should have much more views. This information you give is for me of such a high value, that's why i really love this.
Wow great video, im 12 and before i watched this video i already knew all of this information i already understood this subject clearly i never really learned from this though but good video.
Welcome to reality paranoid conspiracy theorists. Lovely video Dr. Plait. Very nice job. Hopefully, in some way your message can inspire young minds to venture into astronomy and space science.
"I'm not a bad astronomer, at least I don't think so"
I think you are. Tell me, did any of those kids ask about Operation Dirty Trick? Did they ask anything about Jim Lovell threatening Kaysing and Rene over letter and then denying knowing anyone called Rene during the trial? Or why you lied about the danger that USA 193 supposedly posed?
"Tell me, did any of those kids ask about Operation Dirty Trick?"
Oh Pul LEEZE. STOP being a big fat cliched predictable whiner for at least ten minutes out of your life.
Plait is respected, and you're not. Instead of blaming him, perhaps you should ask why peddling refuted and ignorant conspiracies doesnt win you any respect.
Very nice BadAstronomer. Anyone who spreads science, education and knowledge deserves thumbs up. Bigger congratulations for showing kids how awesome Science is.
hey, ive seen all of your videos and i think your awsome, im in high school and i love astronomy. What can i do to get a bit more involved with astronomy or even get a degree like you???
If you are interested, there is a series on History Channel called "The Universe". It is a great show, makes cosmology & astronomy very easy to understand.
Heh. Yeah, but the total running time of these videos (all five parts) is about 4 minutes, and it would have taken hours to insert images and such. I wanted to get these up before school is out for the students! Thanks for the kudos, too. :-)
@grassnake Because children, generally, have not yet reached the point where their own arrogance and hubris directs them to replace a love of facts with the love of their own opinion.
very interesting thanks

Questions I have gotten from children while actually outside using a telescope:
"Do the stars burn out in the daytime when the Sun comes up?"
"That (Orion's 3 belt stars rising on the horizon) isn't stars, it is a radio antenna"
"How do you get your telescope in your car?"
"My daddy has one like that, but he doesn't use it on the sky"
monkeyboy4746 2 years ago
I once asked a friend, "did you hear? Pluto's not a planet anymore!"
Her response was, "What, did it blow up??"
