ive had mine for alot two years and ones a 12cm male and the small one is getting bigger bristles around the edge but dont now if its a male or female cause i think they are males cause they aint bred or nothing and are very highly terrotorial

@bassam2168 They breed well between 23-26 C but they can spawn outside this temperature range as well.

@bassam2168 It's not necessary that the male have to be bigger. The female starts to breed at about 7-8cm total length, if kept in good conditions and she is sexually mature.

my ancistrus looks the same.. can u check my ancistrus video? and tell me if its a male or a female.. if its to old to breed or to young and some other info that can help me..i've had it for about 1-1,5 years. would be nice if u could comment on my video quick couse its getting kinda boring and i need to find a partner so it gets more active, and can u tell me if it can eat some other food? except of cucomber,fish food.. maby some fruit or vegetables.. and what do i need to make it breed?

@TheFishKeeper100 I apologize for my late reply. i was very busy lately. I didn't find your ancistrus video. At 1-1.5 years old they are suited for breeding. The male have those "bristles" on the head while females usually lacks those(see my video) or there are small and without forming "branches". You can give them frozen and live foods, fresh salad or spinach. Water changes stimulates them to spawn if they are ready.

@edarion01 Those are ancistrus not pleco. They reach sexual maturity at about 6-8months up to a year depending on the feeding and living conditions

@areamkarim I don't know about pleco but ancistrus have retractable hooks on the gill covers for protection or fighting. I will not touch those when netting out the fish. :)

@engl3zu23 Salut. Depinde cat de mari sunt dar un bazin de 30-50l ar fi suficient. O sa aiba nevoie de o ascunzatoare unde sa depuna icrele....un ghiveci rasturnat, nuca de cocos, sub o piatra sau buturuga etc. E de preferat sa fie singuri daca vrei sa-i inmultesti desi unele specii mici de pesti nu-s un pericol pentru larvele proaspat eclozate.

@patrick123gk that depends how much space, the number of fish, the plentifulness and rightness of the food, and even the frequency of water changes, but you can reckon between six months and a year.

It's suspended with a fishing line and that's why it gives the floating impression even for someone sitting in front of the tank.

Thanks! If the tank is with pretty large surface yes, otherwise the most likely just one male will breed successfully. But you can put a single male with 2-4 females since one male can "manage" more than one female. In the movie posted there are 2 females.

The male is the one with "horns" and that's the most distinctive feature. At the end of the movie you can see a female out of the coconut.

Initially (some years ago)the tank was with substrate and some plants. And because Ancistrus likes to dig under rocks, wood pieces and different objects placed on the substrate in order to make a "cave", I placed that coconut "in the air" to prevent digging which can be annoying sometimes. That was the main reason at the time. There are others solutions too of course.
