  • A bit off topic but can you tell me where this beautiful place in the video is.

  • @jamie1234591 No problem, it's Queenstown, New Zealand.

  • I like your reviews a lot, they are very imformative, thanks very much for that, but since this dSLR is about 3+ years old, can it really compete with another dSLR such the newer Nikon D7000, which I owned for a year but got stolen for a litle while now, So I am wondering to whether buy this one or the D7000, would really appreciate your advice/Denny

  • @theoneandonlydenny Sorry to hear your D7000 was stolen. The 5D2 is getting on but still offers the best resolution in the current Canon range. Buying decent compatible full-frame lenses though can get expensive. It all depends what you want from your camera, and having owned the D7000 you'll know in which aspects it may have disappointed you. Have a look at the best buys section at cameralabs . com for the models I recommend right now...

  • Great review. I just ordered the 5D Mii a couple days ago and can hardly wait. The remote live review is going to come in handy for many of the projects that I have planned. I currently use an Olympus E-620, although a nice general purpose camera, it has a lot to be desired.

  • Thank you for the review,

As a filmmaker I'm thinking of switching over to DSLR shooting. I'm hesitant, but so far everything points to it being superior. You wouldn't know any traditional style video cameras around the same price range that would be comparable in quality?

  • what type of lens is on the 5D in this video?

  • @TheNoadShow The EF 24-105mm

  • I wonder what the Mk 3 will offer - can I justify the upgrade though? :S

  • Hey, great review! I am using a Pentax K200D at the moment, but I have entered the eos photo 5 competition and this is the prize (im pretty sure). I was just wondering if this is a big upgrade (pretty stupid question i know )

  • whats the cheapest i can get this bad boy??

  • @stupidcommentbelow Sorry, that's how I speak and present.

  • @cameralabs On the contrary to stupidcommentbelow's statement, you speak very well. You clearly know what you're talking about, and you say only what you need to. People respond best to factual statements, as opposed to unnecessary babble, so you're definitely doing the right thing. Keep up the good reviews, I really enjoy them :)

By the way, I think I'm going to buy that camera, I couldn't decide before :)

  • Thanks for the video. However, I couldn't decided which one to get between 7D and 5D mark II. Can you give me some tips?! I'd really appreciate it!

  • @1128zoe Check out the results and verdict pages of my Canon EOS 7D review at cameralabs . com - I did a detailed comparison there!

  • Thanks so much for this review. I am looking for a camera to make short films and music video, but one that is also good with photographs. I am a film major and is the Canon 5mk 2 the suggested camera for what I may need it for?

    --Wachy

  • thanks Gordon, im buying one next week... always a pleasure watching your reviews

  • Bought one what a beauty ;)

  • @Laash101 in my opinion , the distance between simply semi expert and pro is small today. d7000 is perhaps all many of us want. check out... freedslr . com remove spaces and get a way to bring home a Brand New Nikon D7000

  • I got this camera with the 24 - 105 mm L lens. I loved it ever since, it's a great camera, and the lens , 'its not the best out there' but its damn good

  • hi i want to ask that when i m shooting in video mode in camera, movie is played clearly but when i see that movie in canon zoom broweser the movie which is displayed doesnot come steadily it comes slightly delayed the camera is 5d mk2 kindly give any suggestion to solve this problem

  • @sudgai12 Maybe if you update the Firmware?

  • does the 5D have autonatic video mode

  • @jackie20ization Do you mean auto exposure video mode? If so, yes. But since this is a full-frame professional camera, you don't deserve this camera if you don't know simple basic camera controls and terminologies..

  • Thank you for your great review!

  • Thank you for your great reviews Gordon.

I am just considering this camera now (and this model is a little old now), however I wondered if you had any thoughts on if I should hold out for the Canon 5D Mk3 and wondered about your expectations for the MK2's potential replacement.

    Many Thanks

    Andy B

  • ur videos are great im gonna get a mark 2

  • You have a very good english :o nice camera btw

  • @ Cameralabs - If you put this into google you can vaguely hear it..."seven day vegan challenge episode 4"

  • @ Cameralabs - Thank you...is it something that I can do? Or do I need to take it in to get it fixed? I didn't purchase a warranty when i purchased it in June 2010. I posted a video below...you can barely hear it.

  • There's a grinding noise that I'm hearing while I'm shooting in video mode. Is it user error?

  • @jibselicious It's probably the image stabilisation motor in the lens.

  • @cameralabs you are right - I had the same problem as well and just took out the stabilisation motor. Now its calm.

  • @TKTnetwork What? You took the IS motor... ehh... or TURNED OFF the IS motor..?

  • I have a canon 5d Mark II and was wondering if anyone could explain what goes on when shooting the video and you change the "speed" on the Tv setting. It is my understanding that the everything remains open (mirror and the two curtains). But how does the speed then change when shooting the video if this is the case?

In addition, I see there are options to be able to change out the "focusing screen" on my camera. How is it different than the original?

    Thanks in advance,

    The Meltdownman

  • im taking digital photography classes and i wanna continue with advance classes,i wanna upgrade my nikon d 5000 i was wondering if this camera is good or im also thinking the new nikon d 7000 any suggestions you can give me?

  • Do you think canon will be bringing out the mark 3 any time soon? i have been practicing 450D and i think next time i upgrade i'll go for a full frame

  • In my opinion there are way too many unnecessary features, I'll stick to film.

  • @imflyinn What is Film???. and do they still use that???. and when u say film do u mean Still or Motion???.

  • How much this camera cost? Can I buy it in B&H? Can you speak more slouly please? The english is my second lan.

  • should i buy this one or 7d or i should wait for 5d mark3

  • EOS 5D MARK II Is So Totally Freakin' Remarkable n I'm Gonna Get This Ard Nxt Year Soon!!! ^,^ Bty I'm Currently Usin' My New Canon EOS 550D...

  • Thanks for the review..

  • i want 1 COOOOL camera

  • Great video, thanks! Am I the only one who saw the dust fly by at 0:54 and had to check if it was real?

  • Amazing Review, never heard of your website but it's bookmarked now. I'm blown away at the 5dm2 low light. Am I crazy or does it pull off low light better than the Sony EX1,2,3 models? If I' buy, I'll definitely hit up your site to go through, thank you.

  • @Deanzsyclone I wondered the same. I own an EX1, and am blown away by the the 5DM2's seemingly superior handlng of low light.

  • Very-well explained, like it

  • How much it cost??

  • Hello! I'm considering getting this camera to double up as a SLR and to make short independent films. My question is, Is it possible to hook this camera up to a computer or external hard drive for the storage device? That way I can record videos directly to the computer or external hard drive? Thanks! and great review!

  • Was an inbuilt flash too much to ask in this body? How important is it when we compare it to Nikon D700...? :(

  • Was an inbuilt flash too much to ask in this body? How important is it when we compare it to Nikon D700...? :(

  • best dslr camera reviewer on youtube.

  • @MrIrishlogic Ls Centz i lost my baby...listen to it and get into...the song is a banger...temptation sample...old school new school feel...continuation of Ls voicemail on youtube...My second video i ever shot, did it in one day check us out

  • Gordon:

Can you tell me how to set the 5D Mark II ISO below 200 and Auto? My camera does not give me the option to go below 200 or Auto.

    Thanks

    Julio

  • I have a question: Is there on the EOS 5D Mark II and HDR mode?

  • Thank you for the review! I am considering getting this camera.

  • @Morningsidenursery You're welcome! When it's time to buy, please support me by shopping for it - or anything! - at the partner stores page at cameralabs . com!

  • @MrIrishlogic If they are, it's just coincidence as I filmed and edited the whole thing in one go and just cut it in hlaf to make the two videos here - before YT allowed uploads longer than 10 minutes...

  • I'm videografer and right now I'm need a new camcorder. 5D is a good aption vs a regular camcorder???

  • @MrTestTutorials Please read the movie mode page of my 5D 2 review at cameralabs . com - if you think you'd be happy with the restrictions, then go for it. Otherwaise, buy a normal camcorder.

  • hey nice review!!! :D i won't be getting one .. any time soon .. haha but yes.. :)

  • i own a 450D at the moment, but going to upgrade to 5Dmk2 thanks to your awesome review. I'll also pick up the 24-105 & 17-40. Can't wait.

    Thanks Gordon.

  • Hey Gordon, I am in the market for a DSLR, i don't want any entry level becuase i'm heading into this field and i don't want to buy another one in two years time. I am looking for a camera that has a good mp count. fps doesn't matter too much but more is always better. i don't really need a video option. Live view is a must! i love canon but i know there are other great brands as well. I would love it if you could send me a list of cameras in this range that are around $1000.

    Thanks

  • @monkeystar2307 I already have! Check out the best buys section at cameralabs . com for my recommendations at various price points.

  • Awesome review.

btw .. How did you perform the voice over so well? It doesn't appear that you're reading from a script. It comes out very smooth, professional and natural.

I also like the intonation of your sentences. It sounds like you have a background broadcast journalism.

  • @subversyv Thanks! It's actually all ad-libbed, including the pieces to camera. I keep doing retakes until I'm happy with a segment, then move onto the next one. I used to do a radio show in London long ago, but it was live and that was a completely different experience!

  • @Tomasdabest its not porn. its some other file with "On" at the back.....

  • This video is really, really helpful. I read many different reviews about the 5D, including the one on your website, wich I visit very often; as a matter of fact, I watched it on your website but I wanted to live you a comment, that's why I'm here. Thanks for taking the time to make this video review!

  • @chuda99 Thanks, you're very welcome! Don't forget to visit the Partner stores page at cameralabs if you're ever shopping for anything online!

  • This was so helpfull!

Im making a film for the V 48 hour film fest and i got the option of using this camera over the three cam corders i already had.. wasent to sure just because filming a short film with a DSLR sounded kinda weird and i already had three dedicated cameras. I knew this shot in 1080P as well but still couldent choose...googled it..found this video and hands down im going with this camera for my film should look kick ass through this

    thanks for this review!

  • thanks for all you do...this is amazing

  • Hey, you're very welcome! Don't forget to check out my full reviews at cameralabs . com - these videos are just the tip of the iceberg!

  • Don't be ridiculous - do you really think i'd have a folder with that name on my desktop, then film it and upload it for public viewing? Clearly you're seeing things - maybe you've been watching too much of it yourself.

  • @JustifyJustin...

19 point AF isn't new, Canon has just been a bit late in coming out with it for it's non-pro models. Pro Canons had 45 point AF dating back to the 35mm 1v. Nikon has 51 point AF for many of it's cameras for quite some time.

As far as camera choice, it really depends on your needs and your wallet. Price no option, get a Hasselblad H4, for image quality get a 5D, for shooting speed get a 7D, if you are just getting serious, get a T2i. Or a Holga! :)

  • Hey, can you auto focus whilst shooting video?

  • @HEREONOUTBAILEY No you cant

  • yes it says in the video

  • I am big fan of cameralabs because of your analytical and very accurate way of showing the details of cameras. I like this review in Youtube. It is so far the best I've seen.

I am very new owner of 5D Mark II (I bought it yesterday). I agree with your review entirely.

Myself I don't however mind the shooting speed though.

  • ha 0:56 a piece of dust stick to the screen

  • extremely helpful...loving my 5DMkII with Canon 24-75 2.8 Lens

  • great video (part 1 & 2), thanks a lot! great review! since i am thinking of buying one, this really helped! :))

  • thanx a lot richie ,,,,,, thank u so very much.

  • i have bought this camera , but when i shoot video in live view mode under tubelight there r continues horizontal lines coming in video is this a camera fault or some setting has to be adjusted pls help me regarding this

  • just change the shutter speed of the video model, make sure ur camera is in manual

  • Comment removed

  • No, you can only use the EF lenses

  • No, because 5d has a full frame sensor,it's only compatible with other eos'es wich don't have a full frame sensor. Ex: eos 350d, 400d, 450d, 500d, and 7d.

  • it should be. it supports the ef-s series

  • or i maybe wrong

  • Comment removed

  • this or d700? i think this might win in the end because of the 1080p movie mode and 21.1 megapixels, but i shoot lots of sports, primarily skiing and surfing, and 3.9 fps is like 1 step to slow. at least be somewhere around 5 with this w/o the battery pack. the d700 is 8 fps and that great. But again, in the end, I think this wins.

  • @sonofdasea

Which did you decide on, the eos 5d2 or d700?

I`d prefer the eos because of its full frame sensor

  • if you do sports, i recommend the d700 because the autofocus system is alot better than the why-canon-why-do-you-still-have-this-crappy 9 point autofocus system thats on the 5d. if you do studio work and printing and video, then the 5d is for you. but seriously, i once rented a 5d mk ii and i never wanted to touch my aging 30d ever again

  • HelloNewYorkCity>

I have to choose a Canon EOS camera for general journalistic work (web journalism, everything from portrait to sport). I'm struggling to make a decision as nobody seems to be able to concur which is the better overall camera. Is the AF on the 5D really that bad? What have pros been doing before 19 point AF? *ponder*

Do you perhaps have any insights?

  • very nice review! wish i had the money for this camera. im using a canon 30D right now. also, you remind me of Dr. Mike from the show Bite Me

  • Maybe I'm alone, but for most serious photographer's recording video with a high end SLR is not something we're interested in doing. I love the affordability of this camera (for a full frame camera) but the thought of it being a multi purposed machine is a turn off. Concentrate on making the PICTURE TAKING experience as good as it can be. Thoughts?

  • You'd be surprised to see how many newspaper photographers are shooting with this camera for their web-tv features and editors. My company has educated a major part of Swedens newspaper and TV stations webtv editors and photographers and this camera is ideal for this purpose. The photograher only needs one camera, and gets a camera with look similar to film and a camera by far more fun to use than a pd170 or sony xdcam ex1 which are the camcorders most people use for web tv.

  • I disagree, i think there are many photographers that would love the option to have a video mode, me being one, for doing improv interviews, small documentaries, I think its a fantastic feature. Think ill be buying one in a few days:)

  • I think its best you just buy a DV cam. It fits the part rather than using a camera like this for video catching. I did it myself on my 500D. Not the same capacity, but both have the same style.

  • yea maybe you're right. I'm not a professional photographer however for the rest of us its an awesome deal considering u get great video recording abilities (with the bonus of different zooms/focus abilities that are hard to do on home digi vid cams) and u get the bonus of a great full frame dslr which is more than enough for the average user / amateur enthusiast... i love it. as for a career photographer... cant comment :\

  • I really agree. As it says a legend reborn, the 5D has the best capacity of a DSLR, really affordable, easy to use. I have some of my friends keep saying Sony Alpha is the best because they said the video capture is great and as well the live view. But are you for the video or capturing pictures right?

  • I HATE when people say this. Do you know what frames per second is? A movie is shown at 24 fps or 30 fps to simulate movement! So moviemaking IS picture taking! ITS THE SAME THING!!!!! I have an affinity for both video and photography and seriously laugh when PROS and ENTHUSIASTS talk about this point. To me they're all amateurs with MUCH to learn.

  • I know right? They call us photographers not video/photographers. DSLR's are for one thing and one thing only; pictures! Theres no need to mix in HD video and raise the price like crazy!

  • Well. Canon added the Video as a selling point but also as an extra. They decided to add live view so why not have an option to record? its pretty basic recording format. just an small extra that is kinda cool. but your right. Focus on picture taking experience.

  • Here is my thought , Ive used this camera for 6 months already , and now I just can't shoot with my 40d , I was in the brooklyn bridge shooting New York City and without the high ISO on the 5d mk2 I just couldn't have done it u just can't use a tripon on there , plus the great resolution it has is unvelievable I don't care about the video , I've never used it , but I believe it might come in handy sometime , meanwhile as a photo camera , it's just great , that's my thought after 6 months with it

  • @bradleypaul10 Ls Centz i lost my baby...listen to it and get into...the song is a banger...temptation sample...old school new school feel...continuation of Ls voicemail on youtube...My second video i ever shot, did it in one day check us out

  • @bradleypaul10 True but technology is technology. They need to improve it in every way they can and video is only one of the great new things we'll see coming on DSLR. Its not because they want to make it do everything, its because they want it to take any sort of picture the best as possible.

  • @bradleypaul10 As a filmmaker, this is exactly what drew me to this camera. With a few adaptations the Mark II becomes a powerful and versatile movie-making machine. I think that if I were strictly a still photographer, I would look elsewhere. It just seems that the full HD video would be overkill and contribute to an unnecessary extra cost.

  • @bradleypaul10 Check out sony alpha900. it actually emphasizes on phototaking and has no video mode

  • @boyniao Ya the A900 is a pretty solid machine! It was actually between that one and the Nikon D700 - I ended up with the D700 though and I couldn't be happier!

  • @bradleypaul10 The way I see canon going is: 5D - Video priority. 1D - Still Priotiy.

  • @bradleypaul10 From what I viewed, Canon designers stated that this camera was designed for the reporters/correspondents out in the field who needed a hybrid. However, the "masses" have tried to eek out every last capability of this camera from stills to movie making. It was even used in the movie "Up in the Air" and some HBO series. Hence the push to upgrade the firmware (e.g. 30fps/24fps capability). This is an excellent compromise in capability and price in my opinion.

    The Meltdownman

  • @bradleypaul10 I would love to have a really great camera and a really great camcorder, and if I can have them all in one machine, then that's even better. :) That's just my opinion though. To each his own. What is your favorite camera?

  • @guitargirlae I suppose that's true - as long as you're still getting great quality out of both it's not the end of the world. I shoot with a Nikon D700 and a D300s as a back-up for my wedding photography and they're perfect for me - I love them. braddaveyphoto . com

  • I hope your preview of the new 7D is up soon!

  • No, it's bad enough riding a bike to the ski lifts at the top of the road, then hiking to the tip. All from leaving downtown Queenstown at about 3:00PM, not bad for a days adventure. =]

  • You're from NZ, right? I saw on the video part of the 5DMKII that you were videoing Lake Wakatipu, and the Remarks in the background. I climbed those... Take that 5D to the top and get some pix of that!

  • I'm from England, but yep, I live in NZ. Nice work climbing the Remarks - it's bad enough driving up the access road!

  • how come i have black blotching flashing in every picture?

  • we are from brasil and we loved your video ...

  • You are my hero Gordon !! I can't thank you enough for these videos :D You totally rock my world :D

  • Gordon, you mentioned that the 5DM2 can't save movie video on a PC's hard disc. Is there any other way that we can save it in hard disc while using PC sync?

  • I don't think so. You can start and stop recording by remote control, but the video will only go onto the memory card.

  • Gordon, this review on the Canon 5D Mark II is the best video review I've ever seen. It's thorough, well-scripted and your delivery is impeccable. Absolutely fabulous! Thanks for your research and your reviews. You have most assuredly helped me make my choice for my next DSLR. All the best!

    Cheers!

  • Thanks, you're very welcome! Don't forget this video is just a small part of my full review at cameralabs . com, so be sure to check it out too! And don't forget you can also support us by shopping through the partner stores at the cameralabs site, even for books and DVDs...

  • Very good tutorial!

  • Gordon your reviews are the best. keep up the good work.

Can we wish for more lens reviews from Sigma, Tamron, Tokina etc.

  • Thanks! You can wish for the lens reviews, but they won't send me them to test, so until then, there won't be any.

  • @wotg Thanks! You can wish for them, but they'd have to send them in for review first! Sigma is a good bet for the future, but Tamron refuses to send theirs.

  • gordon is awesome.

  • Great review....very precise!

  • hopefully a firmware update will allow easy control of aperture in video mode rather than complex workarounds.

  • 5D MARK II or D700 (NIKON)?

Over all witch one is the superior DSLR ?

  • I've compared them in the verdict of my 5D Mark II review at cameralabs . com...

  • Thanks... while I have your attention, I would like to know: do you think. the D700 will be replaced or upgraded to a true Full frame sensor like the 5D mark II any time soon?

Based on what I have read the D700 is NOT a TRUE full frame DSLR... so I decided to wait it out.

    What do you think?

I find CAMERALABS very helpful & informative

  • I'm not sure what you're reading, but let me assure you the D700 is a full frame DSLR. As for a replacement, I have no idea, sorry!

  • hey Gordon, is the Nikon D90 a full fraim Dslr?

  • Nope, it's a cropped DX format. The D700, D3 and D3x are Nikon's full-frame models.

  • Depends on what you need. Try out both and see for yourself.

  • Because that's how you say W.

  • Japanese people are so smart. Why other countries can't make something like Canon or Nikon? I wish I was Japanese...

  • gordon ftmfw

  • It depsnds how risk-averse you are! An import won't come with a local warranty, so you effectively have none unless you send it back to where it came from. So it depends if or when you think it'll break. By the way, if you're buying from Amazon, Adorama, B&H etc, please click through to them from the affiliate stores page at cameralabs - that's what keeps the reviews coming!

  • Your da man Gordon when it comes to reviews ;-) nice one mate!

  • That camera is hot! And Gordon too!

  • Gordon, I heard that there is a dedicated battery grip that comes with the 5D M2. My question is, will be be able to increase the fps of the camera? And could you please review both together? Thanks.

  • There is a battery grip for the 5D2, but sadly no it does not increase the fps. I have no plans to test it, but one of the 5D2 owners on the cameralabs forum might if you fancy asking there!

  • i used this camera 2 days ago, and its amazing, the video, the quality is great!!

im a filmmaker and im looking for a good hd camera to have and this is the one to get, i saw a video of the Canon 5D Mark 2 being compared to one of the best HD camera out today, The RED One.

seach Canon 5D Mark 2 vs Red One. its crazy! i was so amazed. everyone should check it out.

im getting this camera for my birthday :D!!

  • This video is a brief tour - as I always say, check out my full reviews at cameralabs . com - there you'll find a whole page dedicated to the video mode, and its limitations. If you have a decent spec machine and the right software, there's also no problems playing back the files smoothly.

  • i still loving my manual camera and darkroom, and all the facilities the tecnology is bringing is for new lasy people, and now everything is digital... i like the features of this camera, but we know that almost all of those you can do it yourself.. the software it's like a darkroom, and lightroom ps software... i think i just will bouthg this is for the hd filming,, haha for the rest, all old cameras are the same.

i like this video as well :) nice

  • yay gordon!!!you are really good at review

i am going to order 5dm2!!!

  • 00:55 I thought that dust was on MY screen lol

  • Wow, love the HD video reviews. For instance, anyone notice the speck of fluff/dust move in front of the camera at 0:55?

  • I've noticed it in SD :). But you're right, HDs rock.

  • nice job man, tnx for all this information, great work, and happy newyear butaway ,...( devol,Paris )

  • How does the 5DM2 stack up against Nikon's D700??

  • See my 5D Mark II review at cameralabs . com!

  • I was in awe when I watched this on HD. what camera are you using in recording this video? btw, great reviews on the cameras. I bought the 450d =)

  • probably the camera he is talking about 5dmk2

  • so gordon what happing about the black dot, thing as got a new 5D mark 2,

  • The latest I've heard is on the verdict page of my 5D2 review at cameralabs . com - I'll update that page as and when Canon releases new news! Have you noticed the problem though? It only affects certain photos, and many people may not even notice it. We have an active 5D2 thread on the cameralabs forums, so be great to hear what you think of it, and what you've found...

  • When it comes to the RAW+JPEG setting (or when considering hte quality the Large & Raw + Large) does that mean that the camera takes the picture twice and creates two files? Also, why hasn't the DSLR majority shifted to SD memory? I Know there are some in the market that do use SD, but it seems like the bulk of them use CF, and I was curious as to why. Thanks.

  • Yes, RAW plus JPEG will record two versions of the same image. As for SD and CF, it's a split between consumer and professional DSLRs. Lower end models use SD, while pro and semi-pro use CF. CF also supports technologies like UDMA for improved speed.

  • Another great review

    Thanks very much

  • Honestly Gordon your cameralabs reviews are simply fantastic. They touch on all the relevant issues and still manage to keep it fairly short and simple and your presentation is clear and pleasant to listen to. Thank you so much for sharing them with us!

  • Yes, nice reviews, but there is one big (-)

    = Not enough reviews! :)
