Written in 1949 by Cy Coben and Mel Foree and first recorded that year by Hank Snow. Within 2 years, in 1951, it was collected by MacEdward Leach from Francis Dunphy of Tors Cove, NL, and published in MacEdward Leach And The Songs Of Atlantic Canada by Memorial University of Newfoundland Folklore and Language Archive (MUNFLA). It was covered by The Beatles, recorded at a time when the Beatles were performing in Hamburg, Germany in 1961. George Harrison played lead guitar on this version in 1961.
I remember my mom had this album (I remember the cover image) and I always asked her to play this song and I was crying within 6 minutes every time. :) I must have been about 7 or 8 years old. :) Thanks for posting.

I remember a long time ago sailing on an old ore boat from Wabana to Sydney (CBI). Summer fog and fall cod - memories, memories.
