August 1, 1981 is the day everything changed. MTV is the issue, not which band did what. For the first 18 months of MTVs existence, only videos from 70s bands were shown. Then, of course, just like good special effects in a movie, the image/look became vitally important until 1991. Some of the music was good, some great, most of it was garbage. FYI - the music industry sold more albums from 1984 to 1991 then it did in the previous 40 years. That's a fact and shows MTVs influence.

You also said 80s metal bands owe their careers to Crue, but metal was already coming back in 1980 and by 82 it was undeniably back without Crues help.
@autopsy87 I'm referring to when Motley Crue started to become big around 84-85. The fact is that all those bands hit their climax and were on the way down. If Motley crue hadn't arrived as new blood to the metal community those bands would not have such a lasting career. Most bands were already 'old', and before thrash metal arrived there was no subjugation in music. It was all just rock and roll and metal and the Crue helped push traditional heavy metal more into the mainstream.

The only way something great dies is through civil war, and that is exactly what happened to metal/rock. Attitudes like yours killed metal. Granted the Hair metal scene got out of hand at the end thanks to cookie cutter record companies but the fact remains that 99% of modern metal is influenced from Thrash and not Glam. So if Metal is dead, thank thrash metal.

Motorhead and Venom are probably heavier and faster but the Crue are in my opinion heavier than the rest. If you are into Priest, Saxon, Sabbath, Accept, and Maiden there should be no reason why you can't like Crue's SATD. Oh wait! What happened was this was at the time when hardcore punk rock was huge and everyone was getting into it, causing chaos so people tried to ban it. That's why metallica didn't last because they didn't give a fuck enough to play crazy venues or weren't big enough to get into the larger venues like the olympic auditorium where huge acts like TSOL, Black flag, the vandals, adolescents, circle jerks, etc were playing.

Interesting how history repeats itself. I don't know how things are in America, but in the UK the 80's is back in a strange way. Every new/successful band is wearing tights pants, they have girly hair and write very average, trend following music. Unexciting, middle of the road songs about being dumped or cutting yourself or some shit. Not to say that Glam was a great style of music, but at least they wrote about fucking groupies, doing blow, riding a Harley and having fun.
Glam Metal isn't a genre, is just a way of dressing. The Glam bands are just simply either Hard Rock or traditional Heavy Metal. In the case of Motley Crue, they have completely stopped being metal since they released Girls Girls Girls, but they were metal in the early years. Ratt in the other hand was always good Hard Rock.
Underground artists are constantly spawning, one in several hundred are good to listen to. Keep up with your local scenes and stop supporting commercial trash. Metallica should never have had the opportunity to record so many poor albums time and time again, they sell only to be reviewed as bad. Somewhat a dishonest system.

Kiss played with an orchestra, the Scorpions played with an orchestra it all blew! Guys like Malmsteen and Vai are the only ones that can pull it off because they have the training and background for it! I highly doubt any teenagers knew who Bret Michaels was since he's in his 40's and Poison's past there peak when that show came out!

Then, of course, just like good special effects in a movie, the image/look became vitally important until 1991. Some of the music was good, some great, most of it was garbage. FYI - the music industry sold more albums from 1984 to 1991 then it did in the previous 40 years. That's a fact and shows MTVs influence.

If Motley crue hadn't arrived as new blood to the metal community those bands would not have such a lasting career. Most bands were already 'old', and before thrash metal arrived there was no subjugation in music. It was all just rock and roll and metal and the Crue helped push traditional heavy metal more into the mainstream.

What happened was this was at the time when hardcore punk rock was huge and everyone was getting into it, causing chaos so people tried to ban it. Every new/successful band is wearing tights pants, they have girly hair and write very average, trend following music. @zxc892 they didn't have auto tuners in the 80's! and new glam bands are popping up all over, look up Crashdiet, Loud N Nasty, Sister Sin, Sister etc. Just because you don't see it on T.V. or because they don't play in the states doesn't mean its dead or gone! Dio dressed up and put on one of the biggest shows around for years, Iron Maiden has flags & stage props along w/ different Eddie's! People want good music & to be entertainted and glam bands do that which is why Motley is still big!
