@TennisAnnalyst Hmm it looks like he takes even more tiny quick steps than just 5 but I'll take your word for it since my eyes aren't quick enough to count them individually.
I was there for this match, I remember this. And I also remember this dumb guy sitting behind me saying "WOW look at that serve! You know, this Federer guy is actually pretty good..." to his friend.
WOW 0:15 the amount of steps he takes in a matter of 1-2 seconds is insane. don't know how many FPS this camera has but it probably takes a professional camera to catch that footwork
I dont think there was much reason to jump high though. Im almost certain that petes vert is higher but pete usually dunked lobs that were much higher
you're right zzzzsh, but just think about Sampras having an off day with his serve, in 99 % occasions hes doomed. Federer has absolutely EVERY SHOT, great forehands, serves, backhands, smashes, volleys, drop shots, lobs absolutely every shot there is in a book and he's making new ones
sampras has won 14 GSs in a very competitive era, and not one dimensional era like roger federer.. how often do u see ppl charge the net to pressure him?? sampras have had off days, and yet managed to win 14... if sampras had good days every day, he would end up with more slams federer could dream of.
Federer would've played tolly different tennis had he played in the super-fast 80's or 90's era.If you say Federer would be owned by Sampras in the 90's I'd say Sampras wouldn't win a single GS tournament nowaydays cause ALL the surfaces are way slower than before.
Anyway, I can't remember Sampras playing in all 4 Slam finals, winning 2 when he was 28 and having to deal with a bunch of great young players like Del Po, Nadal, Djokovic or Murray. I can't remember him playing in a single FO final.
Maybe, maybe not. Federer has never had to play someone like Sampras. Serve and volley players are a dying breed in today's tennis game. He would have no idea how to beat Sampras' sheer aggressiveness and near-unbeatable net play. Federer's supposed "all-court" style of play is in reality him just hammering shots from the baseline and getting into long boring rallies. Despite their head to head record, Federer would stand no chance against Sampras in his prime.
DOOOOOOON.

ROFL. Capdeville is crap. I know. He's my countryman, and our only hope after Fernando González and Nicolás Massú retire.
Yeah, we're totally screwed.

salaheddine10 2 years ago
@salaheddine10
its one of the basic strokes in tennis
its a smash...
and if you're not tall enough to hit, you jump
then it becomes a jump smash
sampras just popularized it
foul01 2 years ago
@foul01
No but Federer wanted to jump to enjoy the spectators. Because he can also stay in his position and hit a normal overhead.
salaheddine10 2 years ago 4
@salaheddine10
jumping works better, more angle, less time for opponent to react
besides, its the US open, it pleases the crowd just to glimpse a shadow of sampras again
foul01 2 years ago 42
@foul01 but it is much harder to time correctly. but i guess at that level you pretty much have all your timing down lol

So anyone that jump smashes the ball is imitating Sampras? I didn't know Pete Sampras was also an inventor...

@bluefire3991 : No but i talk only about Federer because that one tries to imitate him.
