Well this is my interpretation and the reason for the difference is becoz of the part where he stared at the wife.

well he must have thought his wife confiscated the cigarettes and wanted him to clean up the room. He quickly and hastily fixed the room up but saw the bump. He didn't know what the bumb was but wanted to clear it up fast so he could get back his cigarettes. So he stepped on it. It turns out the wife FOUND it and he had crushed a hamster for nothing. Poor hamster
