How cool is this all ? when I lived in the Cleveland ,Ohio , I worked as a welder in a Twinsburg , Ohio plant , making amplifiers for Joe, product line Dr. Z
What is with people and just dismissing all modern music just because they don't like anything that they've heard?
There was a ton of bad music back then too, its just that only the good music has stood the test of time. If you actually look you can find good modern music.
I was wondering if anyone here might know of a version of this song I heard years ago. It sounds live, and starts off with a steadily increasing thump on the kettle drum, or one tom tom and the kettle drum, ending with a smack on the snare, and goes right into the guitar part. I don't think this is exactly the same one featured here however. It was my favorite version and I'd like to try to find the album somewhere that has it on it.
the fact that you did ANY video to this song is awesome man, i played this on my headphones in my bedroom for years when I first got the Barnstorm album now I am doing the same thing and I'm 50 years old, rock on man!
@dicko195 Yeah! Me too. Will be 51 in 10 days and here I sit at my computer chair, with MUCH better headphones on, rocking out. Joe Walsh was my very first concert back in mid 70's. What a performance. He set the bar extremely high for any future concert experiences I was to have. I've seen a lot of big headliners, but that concert always remained at the top. Bad Company and the Steve Miller Band both ran a really close 2nd. Quality performances. Live shows are the true test of talent.
Im a welder 16 years when I lived in Cleveland Oh. I welded for Joe's Amplier product line dr. z out of a Twinsburg Ohio plant yes I am proud of this lol
I was fortunate to hear Joe Walsh play in his hometown at Kent State in the late 70's - I have been to many concerts and this was the one to remember he played for three plus hours and brought the house down with every song he played
This is the earlier version he did as part of the band Barnstorm. This is the version they put on the "Look What I Did/Greatest Hits" comp. The "So What" version is a rerecording that funks it up a bit more. My favorite version is actually a remix of the "So What" version (I believe the remix first appeared on "The Best Of Joe Walsh" from around 1980 - I had to go listen to my LP to find it. They took the "So What" recording and added some delay/reverb to the vocals to liven it up a bit.
@gangtwanger ....Thanks totally for the info...I'm a Joe Walsh fan,but I'm not a heavy collector of his works just yet :( He's an awesome guitarist and his style is just that F'ing cool:)
I'll sometimes go months without thinking about this song. I've even gone years without thinking of it (I'm 50). But when I hear it, I wonder if it's the best rock song ever.

wow cool video 5 stars never heard the studio cut of this song either....live videos rock theres a few and 1 blistering version where he plays Jimmy Pages guitar!
I haven't picked up a Rolling Stone magazine for at least 30 yrs. I look at all of these people very differently than I did when I was in my teens and 20's. I don't idolize ANYBODY. Quite the contrary.
dude i got a board shaped like the ones they used. I ordered a bunch of parts from ccs and i got that board working today its amazing. You would think after having that board for 8 years it would be nothing but its somethign now.
Did you know Stevie Nicks said that Joe Walsh was the "love of her life?" Just shows ya. I didn't even know she dated Joe Walsh. I knew she dated Don Henley but not Joe. So there is another piece of worthless information you can do nothing with. I used to listen to this song my freshman year in college in 1973. We'd listen to this, LA Woman, and a bunch of Neil Young stuff over and over and over. Get drunk as shit. Do it again the next night. What did it lead too? Jack basically.
Do you know her? or Know of her?......That wouldn't surprise me at all that Stevie is a little narcissisist. She is the only child of a career Army or Navy family. Daddy's little girl from what I gather. I believe Stevie had more than her share of guys from what I can understand. Joe, Don Henley, Mick Fleetwood, Linsey Buckingham to name a few. Must have been something with her and Henley. Talk about ego central. I think both Henley and Frey were complete assholes. Talented though.
She was in Fleetwood mac, wasn't she? I know Fleetwood mac was a kickass blues band, and then when Peter and Danny left, they ventured into pop music crapola.
If you want to talk about a couple of assholes you'd have to include Jimmy and Robert at the top of the list. Who was their manager? The fat guy who stole from them? He tops the list. Led Zeppelin was one of the greatest bands ever, but if you want to locate the most arrogant, self absorbed, venal, people on the face of the earth you wouldn't be too far off if you were near ole' Jimmy, Robert, and John. Did they ever do a nice thing for anyone?
They did a nice thing for everyone who is a fan of good music, which is make some of the greatest music ever recorded. I don't think Zeppelin are arrogant, and even if they are, they have a right to be. They are the worlds 4 most talented musicians ever to be in a single band. If you wanna call someone arrogant it would be the Stones
Considering the Beatles have 4 or 5 of the top 100 Albums All Time {Rolling Stone Magazine} I'd say they might be #1. Those Albums are #1 Sgt Pepper #4 Revolver #7 Rubber Soul #9 The White Album. I'm not sure Zeppelin has one album in the top ten although Led Zeppelin 2 was certainly a "game changing" album. Zeppelin was a great band. From what Eric Clapton said ALL the English bands were very "competitive." He said he couldn't believe how different the USA band "atmosphere" was
i would not take anything that rolling stone magazine says too seriously, they are known for having a big editorial bias; just look at their list of best guitarists, kurt cobain is top 15 but eddie van halen doesnt crack top 50. they just say what THEY wanna say, cuz well, they can
You know man, most of those 70's rock bands weren't trying to be anything that they weren't. They were talented w/their music true. But, when it comes down to it, they were a lot more real w/their music during that time era. 70's and 60's rock is a lot more relevant to my teenage life than most other rock music that came out after those decades.
totally today i've only found a few bands that show what they really feel. today people only care about a beat or a hook they have no idea what is being said. thats y where todays music is going starts to scaare me....
I know exactly what you mean man. There's too many stupid kids in my high school that don't understand that culture. A lot of the parties that go on today just aren't the same thing. The average idea of a party today is too commercial.
@uarezero As Pete Townshend once wrote: "People keep tryin' to put us down
Just because we get around"
I'm a high schooler, but I prefer to stay away from drinking and I listen to classic rock. But I appreciate newer music, too. I'm not big on rap, but I understand that some of its creators are good writers. Don't generalize. There's a lot of value in new music, you just have to know where to find it. If you can't chances are you aren't looking quite deep enough.
@Miltonnewyork Man, I'm 16 years old and also like the good original modern stuff too. But, 70's rock has a lot more to say. It's actually about something. Todays music just isn't the same. It doesn't appeal to teenage life the way this stuff does
haha sweetprism you don't know anything about music history, do you? Joe Walsh's single Turn to Stone was released in 1975. Lords of Dogtown takes place from 1975 to 1977. I'm not sure what your talking about with decade differences...
I'm not referring to when the film takes place, I'm referring to when the film was MADE. The main character is like 24 years old--this song was recorded 1 years before he was even born. LOD was a decent movie, but I was just saying that Joe Walsh's genius drowns it.
Joe uses what he called "train wreck guitar" all over this song, which is a particularly deep and nasty fuzztone made by overdriving the amp and playing on the low strings of a Les Paul guitar with enormous amounts of sustain.
This is Joe's eulogy for Duane Allman, who he worshipped.
well i am 14 and this song is like the best in the world I LOVE THIS SONG i hate the crap they play today i wish the would play stuff like this ahh i love it
yes i actually think that it is necassary to show that teens now a days like me like music like this from decades ago and i put it as a reply to someone who said "im 15 and i love this music" So yeah
Rolling Stones, The Doors, Deep Purple, Crosby Stills, and Nash, Iron Butterfly, Sammy Hagar, Santana, Allman Brothers, all kinds of Good classic music.- TX
@xXMegan1111Xx ==> When I first heard this I was 14 and that was over 25 years ago. I still love it. Great tune. I think that kids these days are listening to and appreciating some of the older rock and taking it for what it is... quality music with no bullshit attached, and that is good to see....
@beelzabubba Absolutly man! I'm 17 and love all this shit. I got into the whole 60's and 70's counter culture around 14. I used to like 80's hair bands and then moved on to all the modern heavy stuff. I can honestly say that 70's and 60's rock is what I like best.
you might like to check out the number of different artists whose albums he appeared too - he's a great guitarist and well rounded musical talent who can play a wide range of instruments
lol some of the people on here are retarded bro...its not their fault... but when you bread a dumb fuck with a dumb fuck bakerforlife13 is what you get XD
this song is insane! i have been looking for it for a few years, im only 20 but joe walsh is one of my favorites. up there in my book w/ santana, clapton, beck, page, blackmoor, hendrix and the rest. rolling stone is definitely wack. this song always reminds me of floyds animals, mainly in the guitar. hella sick!
I bought the record (Barnstorm) this cut is on in '74, and it still rocks. I was 13..I'm glad that younger folks are still recognizing Joe as an AWESOME musician...
Only one complaint...This song is 20 minutes too short. hahahahah J/K
yeah dude you sound like my big bro he got me into this because he has this record and he played it the other day and said the exactley the same thing
i NEED the fucking tab for the opening solo, it's driving me nuts that i can't find it anywhere, i'm tryin to find it without buying a fucking music book too...

@xXMegan1111Xx ==> When I first heard this I was 14 and that was over 25 years ago. I still love it. Great tune. I think that kids these days are listening to and appreciating some of the older rock and taking it for what it is... quality music with no bullshit attached, and that is good to see....
beelzabubba 1 year ago
@beelzabubba Absolutly man! I'm 17 and love all this shit. I got into the whole 60's and 70's counter culture around 14. I used to like 80's hair bands and then moved on to all the modern heavy stuff. I can honestly say that 70's and 60's rock is what I like best.

this song is insane! i have been looking for it for a few years, im only 20 but joe walsh is one of my favorites. up there in my book w/ santana, clapton, beck, page, blackmoor, hendrix and the rest. rolling stone is definitely wack. this song always reminds me of floyds animals, mainly in the guitar. hella sick!
pumperdump 2 years ago 7
I bought the record (Barnstorm) this cut is on in '74, and it still rocks. I was 13..I'm glad that younger folks are still recognizing Joe as an AWESOME musician...
Only one complaint...This song is 20 minutes too short. hahahahah J/K
Rock on.
