okay, price doesn't matter, and I'm wondering which lens/lenses are best for film making? I have an EFS 18-55 mm (starter kit) lens and it works okay, but I'd like something that really makes an impact. Any ideas?

@drumat5280 if you set the aperture to 5.6 you dont need to worry about the zoom while taking video, especially if you're outside where you have enough light
@KingSkulkZ I'm thinking about the same; I've been looking at the Tamron 70-200 which is relatively cheap compared to the Sigma or Canon brands of similar focal lenght. At a 2.8 maximum aperture, its pretty fast.
As far as the zooming in and out while filming, that's actually considered unprofessional by pro videographers anyway so it's not that big a deal in that sense. I do miss the zoom buttom the camcorders have though.
Hey, i'm not sure so that's why i ask but what's the big difference between the 18-135mm kitlens and the 28-135mm except for the fact the 28-135mm has USM and the 10mm difference?
I am entering Fashion Photography, I want to do it for a living and now i'm changing equipment. I am on a low budget and I would like to know opinion on the utilities for this lenses with my future 5D. I used to shot with a 400D and 2 lenses (a canon 18-55 and a sigma 70-300) that need replacement because they have no stability. May I ask for your advice? Thank you so much!
Hey Dave, I'm a big fan of your videos and I shoot on a DSLR myself. I was curious of what your setting are when you export your video from your editing program. All of my video looks horrible after I encode it from Adobe Premier.
hello ;) i just got the canon 550d, and i shot some videos with it. but i just don´t know why there is so much noise in my videos. have you got some advice which settings could reduce this noise. I havethe 18-55mm lens, and the noise seems really high. Would it be useful to buy the 50mm 1.4 for better videos, also due to lower noise maybe? i would be really happy if you answered my questions .. thanks a lot ;)
1 question. is there a problem with zooming with any lens, like you showed in the beginning of the video?
I only shoot on primes, but I do some stuff which is not planned, and I dont have time to change lenses, will this be a good zoom lens with a great range of focal lengths?
@drumat5280 I knew those mountains at 1:52 looked familiar! Hello from Boulder. :^) By the way, to answer your question -- the only prime lenses with image stabilization that Canon makes are 200mm and up.
I like how you showed the IS on vs off... most reviews say if it's good or bad but never show the difference. None of mine currently have the IS so never get to see the difference.
This might as well be a 50 mm review, you kept talking about it soo much. Not enough info on the actual Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM.

there are 2 new prime lenses with IS... 24mm and 28mm.... :D hope that helps

What do you think about the Tamron AF 28-75mm f/2.8 SP at $449?

you keep mentioning "50mm prime". I got it, it's 50mm, but there's the 50mm f/1.8, f/1.4, and f/1.2 which one are you speaking of?

I wish canon would make a IS prime trio. 28 f1.4 IS, 50 f1.2 IS, 135 f2 IS would be godly for low light. But oh, the prices :)

If you lock at f/5.6, is it still not possoble to zoom in and out during shooting the video?

@KingSkulkZ depends on your price range, the more expensive you get the more options you have.

The Canon 100mm F2.8 Macro lens is a prime with IS, Doug. It's an awesome lens, and just as good shooting non-macro as it is with macro.

Regarding the changing aperture, at 28mm you can set it at f/5.6 or higher, that way when you zoom in it will stay constant.

Good video, very illustrative regarding the effect of aperture change on video recording!
All primes with IS from Canon:
100mm 2.8L macro;
200mm f2L;
300mm f4L and f2.8L;
400mm f4L and f2.8L;
500mm f4L;
600mm f4L;
800mm f5.6L.
