  • Yip CR78, great! Was brought out in the dvd box. Check out the rerelease of duke.

  • How American Idol and major talent shows that followed has been on this long and this song not be covered is beyond me, you would think this would hit those people perfectly, but what am I saying, those people dont know what the hell music is anyway so I guess I shouldnt be that surprised.

  • Roland CR-78 drum machine :)

  • to me this is one of those songs that bring tears of joy to my eyes . we always refered to genesis as (the boys) and the songs behind the lines and dutchess as the power & the glory !!!! when put together like on three sides live .thanks for the video

  • I love genesis! what a band...what a band...

  • I was at this actual gig - 14 years old. Queued up overnight the previous weekend to get tickets.

Always thought this song had a very special something - the very essence of Genesis.

  • Brilliant.

  • Thanks, and anyone here with a good ear?I'm trying to cover this on bass ,the rhythm generally and stuff, but since there isn't any tab around,I'm doing this by ear.

So anyone can tell me what are the main chords used in the song?I think it's something around C D E

  • I just know I am still going to be listening to this when I'm 90, not out.

  • oh and Chester is the man

  • One of my all time fav Genesis tunes. I always crank it up. particularly that chorus.

  • Love the beginning of this song, reminds me of some old video game soundtracks. Video game music in the late 80s and through the 90s were heavily influenced by classic rock such as this so it makes sense.

Trying to figure out what that sound is at 1:20 ; starts low and rises to 1:26

    Such a beautiful sound.

  • @darkskidz it's a simple prophet 5 "string" synth sound sent through a phaser pedal.

  • @darkskidz After starting to listen to Genesis recently... I have began to wonder exactly this... Whether many of the Japanese video game music composers of the 80s were influenced by 70s prog rock bands. For example, the 2nd part of Banks' solo to "In the Cage," the part where it slows, reminds me of Mega Man 2, etc.

  • Can someone remind me how many of them are on stage in this video,'cause the lights are dim and I can't really make them out..

    Rutherford-Bass pedals ,Chords

    Banks-Keyboards,effects

    Chester-Drums

    Collins-Vocals,drum machine

  • @MrKeratz Darryl Sturmer-Guitars (completely left on your screen)

  • C'est sur que si on est pas né avec on ne comprends pas bien.Moi je me suis élevée avec et ça m'a bien aider... Merde à ceux qui n'aiment pas

  • tout à fait d'accord...............

  • when was the last time we saw a concert like this...its been a longgggg time thats for sure

  • so many great songs from genesis through the ages but only touches certain people,i cant understand why some people cant see it and go to see run of the mill bands like u2 and rolling stones etc

  • Top tune. I love the first three tracks from duke then it goes downhill from there IMO.

  • I always thought it was about Joan Biaz..At least I was told that enough times. It has always been one of my favorite Genesis songs

  • Don't worry Duchess, I still would have cried for more.

  • I wondered at the time of its release if this song was about Patti Smith, who had faded away for awhile by this time (into married bliss it turned out).

  • we use to listen to albums beginning to end.. Genesis was one of the best!

  • @3:48 he looks joe cocker

  • This stuff is awesome. I like Genesis with Peter Gabriel and feel like it became a different band after but I honestly believe this stuff is way better than the stuff they did with him.

  • @schnicklefritzen it definitely became a different band after gabriel left, but still no one can match what they did-i favor trick of the tail myself but three sides live is one of my favorites to listen to-it amazes me how similar to gabriel phil collins ended up sounding in a lot of the subsequent recordings©

  • @AthenA2ptO: I think it was no coincidence. Collins owes his whole presence to Gabriel.... and to be honest.. I probably have not given Early Genesis enough of a chance. I'm glad to know others dig this stuff still. Sometimes I feel like a stranger in an alien place.

  • @schnicklefritzen when u refer 2 early genesis do u mean what gabriel did or what phil did when he took over?i actually havent gotten a chance to go back much further than lamb lies down ,but seriously if u havent had a chance to listen to at least trick of the tail u owe it to urself-dance on a volcano&squonk are 2 of my favorites from that one-altho the whole damn album is good.and i love the way they seem to have made a habit of having at least one instrumental mostly at the end of the album©

  • @schnicklefritzen and no need to feel like a stranger dude-u would be surprised how many people like this stuff©

  • @AthenA2ptO wow. I just heard volcano for the first time. I bought Duke when I was 14 back in 84 shortly after I had first heard some of the stuff on 3 sides live.. and have been listening to them all along. I think I've had 4 copies of each recording over the years. I think I'm gonna go buy trick of the tail tomorrow.

  • @schnicklefritzen thats awesome-i hope u like the rest of that album-i actually hadnt listened to much of the rest of duke or abacab even tho i knew several songs from each-just made me appreciate them even more-im not so familiar with wind and wuthering tho-i think i have that one but will have to dig it out and give it another few listens-enjoy trick of the tail tho if u can find it!©

  • @AthenA2ptO Every Album is worth a listen, at least up to"Invisible Touch", wich is not all that exciting. When it comes to Phil's singing, though, "Three Sides Live" may be the ultimate proof of how great a singer he sometimes is. My Favourite song from "Duke" : "Heathaze". Let it grow on you.

  • @Schteinrick oh ive heard that one and like it as much as just about every other song on that album, esp man of our times and dukes travels and dukes end-whole thing is great

  • Genesis deserves to be heard, ESPECIALLY today.

  • Phil led Genesis...always my fav song....My brother explained it to me..Was it Joan or Janet?.......Great tune before they went mainstream

  • I hated this album when it came out, but went to see the tour anyway. I saw the 1st night in Chicago, and ended up going to all 4 shows. Great stuff.

  • I LOVE them Taurus pedals

  • Phil was so awesome in this era, it's a shame he has depression problems now. All he accomplished and he has suicidal thoughts, tragic...

  • @Jangocat Think about it........he can't play his beloved DRUMS anymore! Imagine how he must feel..... Drumming is his PASSION. Remove that and no wonder he thinks suicidal thoughts.

  • Thanks for posting this, we are always exhausted for any rare video from Genesis.

  • This is one of my all time favorite concert memories. I saw them perform this in Montreal, and I was blown away.

  • I was at the 1980 Duke tour in Long Beach CA. AWESOME....Great BAND....Most or all of the members had their Masters or Doctorates in Music from English Universities. The clearness and complexity of their music shows their depth of education and spirit. EverClear!

  • phil is talking about him and his band, and the dying dinosaur of prog rock, but couching it in a story about a duchess who loved music and was shunned by her audience. he's thinking "if i write it about a woman, they won't realise it's about me . . .!"

  • This is one of Genesis greatest tracks and I love the Gabriel era.

Really puts the hairs up on the back of the neck.

    My lips start quivering.

    The power of music.

  • One of the best TB genesis creations, one of amy all time faves. the intro never fails to make me smile and think of care free summer days.

genesis, whichever era, were creative geniuses. 130 million albums sold and stiil the music press turned their nose up at them!! Its a strange world!

  • Brilliant.

  • Great song

  • not so rare as thought. i have the whole duke tour concert on dvd

  • Es uno de mis favoritos de siempre!

  • ...nicht jeder besitzt Live Aufnahmen der "DUKE-Tour"...großes Kino

  • Awesome! Brings back so many good memories and still fills me with joy. Many thanks for posting this. Much love.xxx

  • I used to listen to this song as an 18 year old - now I think it's really weird how it relates today "She dreamed of a time when she preformed when everyone would cry for more" Celebrity is this - a hard pill to swallow when they don't cry out for you anymore. Beautiful. Used to stop me in my tracks.

  • One of my all time favorite Genesis tunes and one of many tunes that makes DUKE also one of my faves from the Collins/Banks/Rutherford years! :-)

  • @vinnykster

Please guys enjoy my cover of this! "Bheind the lines/Duchess cover by Pino lettieri"

and "Down and out cover by pino lettieri" Duke's travels cover by pino lettieri" "Fading lights cover by pino lettieri"

    pl

  • holy melting socks, left Paris in 1980 as this rang out that summer. Stumbled back to Scotland and met my still enchanted wife, no Duchess though.........

  • 3:38 was funny to see!!!! i luv them <3<3<3

  • i luv this song XD!!!!!!

  • I adore Tony Banks' songs!

  • one of the more underrated cuts made by Genesis under Phil's direction... even if Phil's trying to put his moves down on it. lol

  • Magical! Genesis are the best.

  • What a beautiful song. Banks' at his best. His solo album has the same sound.

  • Phil letting them know the score.........One of my top 10 Gmen tunes....Slick lyrics from Tony....... Hawaiian shirt and beard phase LOL AAA+++

  • This is an amazing song by an amazing band. There never has nor shall there even be a collection of talent quite like that of Genesis. Thank you, gentlemen, for decades of incredible music.

  • Duran Duran ripped off part of the melody in this for their song The Reflex.

  • @wickidlywikidable You know, I love both songs and never made the connection. They do sound a lot alike!

  • Kids, take your disagreements to another forum. This is not the place. Please!

  • SINGER: Phil Collins

  • I bet he doesn't know what cunt is

  • Genesis' (modern) best songs aren't the big hits (Misunderstanding, Invisible touch, That's all, etc).... They are songs like Duchess, Me and Sara Jane, Dodo, Domino. Just an incredible band.

  • Genesis are a piece of my life.

I started to follow them when I was very young but after 30 years, after having known a lot of music, I still love them.

They will go on to be part of me forever.

  • @meredith1961 Its how these kind of bands go,you never forget them :).I am a young adult atm,so I am not as experienced with them as you are,but i first heard them when i was 5...and got stuck.I listened to duchess on a random tv show and i was like "nice music".Then,I encountered song on Laxius Power game, and i learned band was called Genesis. So far,I havent forgotten them, and not planning to soon.

  • @meredith1961 They're a part of mine too. Was raised with them. Saw them in Manchester three years ago; met members of the official forums (sadly no longer active); spent over £100 on the day on food, alcohol and merchandise. Not a shred of regret :o)

  • This band is one of the most legendary and classic that have passed through USA/UK.And I mean it.

Their sound is something no band can reach,it's unique,A mixture of elaborate instruments, rhythmic notes from guitar and stuff...just take a "hearing"at duchess. There is on way any band could do that rofl.

Genesis deserve to be heard, even today.

  • @MrKeratz The best comment on here. I agree with all you wrote, deffo.

  • @MrKeratz So why is the only album that you can find in the bins is "we cant dance"

  • @44hornet probably because the dumbass companies that make the cd's dont think people want the good stuff from long time ago-jackasses-what do they know©

  • @MrKeratz @ixeldj

I agree with everything apart from the "even today"...they should ALWAYS be listened to

  • @MrKeratz so true.

  • Thanx..............

  • @WLBFC wtf is your problem

  • @WLBFC Justify what you said? They have sold 150 million albums.

  • @WLBFC Ofc it does. Why don't you go say it on tv then?=P At least the band has been on tv more than you for sure ^^;.They exist since 1967,you since?=P No lies pl0x.And numbers speak, not noobs.=)

  • @WLBFC I just blew my load up your mum. And my jizz counts for more than yours.

  • @WLBFC HA! This song is a masterpiece! This band is for people who take music seriously so I suppose you would not understand.

  • @WLBFC Who asked for you opinion, creep? Is the sun yellow or blue? You have no clue!

  • @WLBFC Why don't you go fucked off? Idiot.

  • @WLBFC You'd better STOP with your useless comments. This video is only for Genesis lovers, not for SHITS like you.

  • @WLBFC You see you are losing the fight ,still trying?I bet you love Justin Bieber or gaga or something xDD

  • One of my favorite oldies songs. So glad i heard this in my lifetime.

  • Wow!!! I did'nt know they did this song live on stage. Wonderfull.... pure classic.

  • i remember this concert like it was yesterday

  • hard to believe 30 years old, this song rarely fails to move me. Absolute classic, and for me in top 3 of all genesis stuff. Tony Banks has often siad this is one of his favs, and easy to see why!

  • am I the only Gabriel era Genesis fan who classes this as THE Genesis track

  • Great vid. This is no longer rare anymore since it was officially released on the 2007 reissue of Duke. It was a part of the DVD bonus features. Formerly known as footage aired for the Old Grey Whistle Test, the footage is 38 minutes in length and features Behind the Lines, Duchess, Guide Vocal, In The Cage, Afterglow, Dance on a Volcano, and Los Endos.

  • I really like the green light effect in the intro. Genesis always guaranteed a great light show at their concerts.

  • LOL this song was in laxius power. That old school RPG game. XD.

  • fantisico

  • this is not three sides live

  • LOVE Three Sides Live ~ Duchess being one of my most favorite :) Thank you for posting this video...

  • No, hun. Three Sides Live was the Abacab tour '82. This was the Duke tour '80 :)

  • My mistake:) Sometimes the tours in my memory are a little 'fuzzy' :D Still one of my favorites ~

  • Great performance with phil collins very inspired and at his best

  • Great song for a long drive- The whole album is awsome.

  • ive uploaded better quality of these songs i think,

i dont have time to check, not rare tho :P

  • Fanbloodytastic, mate!! Cheers! Awesome post!

  • You're welcome ;)

  • 4:27 "You're the one we waited for"

X Factor and Simon Cowcrap, learn about music first. And start with Bowie or Genesis.

  • A simply beautiful song. What a classic. Thanks for posting ixeldj.

Perfect for walking in English forests in Autumn.

  • Just to note, you can get this and some other songs on DVD with the 2007 version of 'Duke'

  • "And on the road, where all but a few fall by the wayside, on the grassier verge." Best line ever.

  • This song brings chills to me.

  • Sweet

  • One of their best for sure, although Phil flubbed the lyrics.

  • Spitze!!!

  • Would be nice to have carried on a few minutes to the "Guide Vocal" that comes next. But thanks anyway.!

  • Yes, for me too.. But this version it's rare to find ;)

  • The chorus of the song is so good to sing along. I don't know any part of any song I like to sing more.

  • Pucha que se hecha de menos a genesis o a phil en aquella epoca...Grande Genesis!!!

  • crazy to see Phil operating the drum machine, the version i have of this at the Lyceum must have been a different night cause you don't see that at all! Thanks for posting ;-)

  • WOW! Thanks ixeldj :-)
