One of the greatest and most underrated producing-songwriting teams; Thom Bell and the late Linda Creed are responsible for nearly all the great Stylistics hits. Thom Bell is also largely responsible for the success of the Spinners and the Delphonics.
Sure wish music with meaning would return. Opps mybe it's my age. Anyhoo. Now can relate to parents thought pattern, Music on rear end it's mood awakening!!!!!!!!
I was born in '78, and i love this song to death.Other soul songs from the '70s too. This song has meaning.P.S....yeah,my hair was long.(if you were listening)
True song in these day philly songs even ahead of time trust me in our communty sad to say right now its worst then ever I guess we have to be on god side peace.
I used to listen to this during Navy mid-watches (12am-6am) in the Philippines... It's just as beautiful, provocative, and socially important now as it was 40 years ago ... and their debut album was one of the best ever produced.
people listen attentively to the lyrics of the song that speaks volumes about the crisis in our world today. It is not all about your problems, trials, tribulation and hardships that are plaguing you and our society. Get your mind off yourself and your situation, be about OTHERS and you will find that the things you are "going through" are minor comparatively speaking.A kind word or gesture daily, giving a listening ear to someone, giving a "tithe" to someone on the street, the SMALL THINGS.
Deep message. Didn't understand the lyrics back in the seventies when my cousin constantly played and sang this. Cuz passed yesterday at 60. Here's a tribute to cousin Robbie Lewis. He loved this song.... I love it.
@trooper40below xcuse me i"m from philly area and i did"nt mean for my comment to sound negative at all. i"m almost 60 yrs. and i did hear the words. many times, especially back in the day when it played over the radio.my comment was meant to be a positive thing.as for retarded? well i think you just misunderstood. excellent tune from an excellent group....
Omg!! when the cast starting sing this song in the open Of Tyler Perry Play Media Big Happy Family it took me back to the 70's when I was a little girl growing up this all my parents and cousion who where much older than me would listen to on 8 TRACK!! now this is what you call music I just love IT I never get tired of listen to track like this those where good old days!!
Finished High School in 73, finished college in 78.....what a wonderful time to be young, footloose and fancy free. Chillaxin' to music like this .......AHHHHHHH:)
Great album track. Used to play it to death. You wouldn't hear this on radio in UK in early 70s. They were too wrapped up in T Rex, Gary Glitter and all that cr@p
The 70's were the greatest music era. Crossed all social climates, demographics and races. I am a 51 yr old white dude that jams to all the Philly soul, Motown soul and turns many young folks today what "soul" really is.
It's hard to believe this song didn't make it to #1--it is so much better than ANYTHING that is out now--this is what is called "Old School", but I love it as much 39 years ago as I do today. Thanks for posting this!

60s and 70s had the great and best tunes. This reminds me when I grew up about 8 blocks from the Apollo Theater. That place was always lit up on weekends with the best performers. The line was around the block to get in!!!!! James Brown was always there Diana Ross & Supremes, The Four Tops, Temptations..etc..
I saw The Stylistics in concert earlier this year. They killed it! The original member of the group who sings lead must've passed away or left the group. So they replaced him with a guy who sounds EXACTLY like him....who is also half his age! He had to be like 35 while the rest of the group are in their 60s. He did a great job! I'm an 80s baby but I LOVE old school music!
@missj21 I checked it out and original lead singer Russell Thompkins, Jr. is alive and well and touring with his own group. From Wikipedia: "In 2004, Thompkins, Jr. started a new group, Russell Thompkins, Jr. and the New Stylistics, with Raymond Johnson, James Ranton, and Jonathan Buckson. "
You have me riding in the back seat of my daddy's Ponitac bobbing my head while he picked out his afro before we took off....man this brings back memories....they don't make music like this anymore....CLASSIC!!!!!!
walkin around the city of Boston as a kid , just some change in my pocket, enough to take a bus and a train in and home,I was rich, because I had this music to live on!
And now I have these prescious memories, and the music sounds better than ever!

great to hear this classic soul smoocher again.... just remembered that the two note bass intro was ripped off by Calender for their 1975 number "Hypertension"......
My Dad came home from 'Nam and played this in the car for years-shit, all thru the 70s really. I remember my brother and me were in the backseat of his 72 Lincoln Continental and we were cool with it-believe or not. Now, today, I'm 42, Dad has passed away, and I still listen to his music in honor of him...I guess this, and the blow, helped him cope with coming home...Peace to the Vietnam Vets.
@firstchoice1956 : No prob firstchoice. Pops was a Marine as well. Not sure what unit he was in, but I have a pic of him injured in Dah Neneg in early 69.
The70's..... such a beautiful time for black culture & music.....Women were respected, social commentary, the message was love, Good Times, What's Happening, The Jeffersons, Flip Wilson, Sanford and Son, Naturals were cut tight, Soul Train Saturday Mornings, J5, Muhammad Ali, SOUL Brotha, Right on!!!....Shaft, Foxy Brown, Super Fly, Ice Cream truck in the hood, Afro pick with the Black Power salute on the end....BLACK WAS BEAUTIFUL!!....Lets get it back!! One Luv!!
It's hard to understand how anyone could not like this timely classic. Just listen to the lyrics. Compare to what you hear today...no comparison at all.
This was the most perfect analogy of life at that time. We were concerned about life and where it would end. Marvin Gaye, what's going on, all of us were dedicated to changing America as we knew it.

God, blessed the world with this jam. I say jam, because that's what they called the hits back then. Things were a little smoother back then. Time have really changed in some ways, and then again they have remained the same. PEACE!
@BlackPride1000 You ain't never lied about that!!!...It seems like the music industry pushes the most nihilistic nonsense!!!...I feel sorry for the youth of today...And people wonder why the world is going to hell in a handbasket...Smh...
Man oh man, this song takes me back to 1971, riding my banana seat bicycle, with my tight fro, big hoop earrings, with the wind in my hair and face and not a care in the world. Such great memories!!!!! I love this song.
@MGG75 Ice Cube 's group Westside Connection he formed the group with Mack 10 and Dub C in 96 they sampled this song for Gangstas make the world go round
I saw them once.. The original group ! A dream come true... I cried throughout the entire show. Very emotional to hear these songs that were imbedded into my soul and youth. The band was amazing live and i will never forget. <3 I doubt it will ever happen again. I hear the lead singer has been replaced.
The song writing artistry of Thom Bell and Linda Creed plus the vocal skill and style of Russell Thompkins, Jr....this song holds up as well today as it did when it came out in 1972.
Oh yeah! You missed The Dramatics, Delfonics, Main Ingredients, Impressions and many many others. It will take a MAJOR Revolution for today's artists to sound this good again.

I saw them once.. The original group ! A dream come true... I cried throughout the entire show. Very emotional to hear these songs that were imbedded into my soul and youth. The band was amazing live and i will never forget. <3 I doubt it will ever happen again. I hear the lead singer has been replaced.

Been looking for this song for a very long time. Haven't heard this since I was a little kid.
