Guys, this was made in the 40's things were different then. I don't belive he was a racist . Look at old tom & Jerry cartoons .. it was a whole other era.
I was prepared to thumb you down, as I was aware of the negroid centaur from an article about the character being edited out in the 1990 release... I saw your comment and just thought 'chill out... it's only disney... how bad can it be?'. Well... On watching the scene in the trailer - I think it's a DISGUSTING and hurtful representation of a black person, and this is coming from a white, jewish gay man! I have no racial agenda. But even by 1956 standards it's horrible.
Excellent movie. Today, no hand drawn animated movie since this movie has ever matched Fantasia in terms of beautiful animation. This is stuff you can't get cheaply hired Koreans to do. (Not being racist, just pointing out that every hand drawn cartoon is outsourced to Korea)
wow. I scrolled down to check the comments as soon as I saw that. This is the first time I noticed that... it seems so... out of place, not because it's the only african looking character present, but cuz they made her look stupid. it would fit in perfectly if they had made her look graceful like the others. but... what're we gonna do? it's disney in the 40s/50s. ^^'
il film che ha "segnato" la mia vita. Era lunghissimo e lo vidi tutto in piedi perchè la sala era gremita. Ne rimasi incantata! ERa il 1956, quindi! Avevo 6 anni. Lo consiglio vivamente a tutti i genitori. Imperdibile.
Well, part of the reason why it did not get the revenue it deserved was because of the time it was released. World War II had just started in Europe and foreign markets were an important financial resource for Disney. But when the war started, the markets were cut off.
Yeah, Pinocchio was supposed to outdo Snow White in terms of animation quality. That, by the way, is one of my all-time favorite Disney movies ever, that and Alice In Wonderland.
Yeah Pinocchio is my favorite also, just the colors the great characters, and Pleasure Island really makes it a classic. This and the Great Mouse Detective really defines the greatness of Disney animation.
Yea, Hercules and the Great Mouse Detective are my favorites..but I love nearly all Disney movies. Except HSM and HSM2 and I hear that there's going to be a third.. :P
This movie blew my mind when I was a little kid. My brother, sister and I were so hypnotized by it! We watched it a million times... It made me love classical music years later.
me too. this is one of the few disney movies that I don't tire of. The other is 101 Dalmatian. I'd sooner watch this movie than the garbage Disney is putting out today. A real classic.
This 1956 re-release trailer is shown in an abridged version at The Great Movie Ride at Walt Disney World. (All trailers shown before TGMR ride were shortened.) This trailer is not included in the Fantasia Anthology DVD set, which makes it unique and hard to find. The actual 1956 voice-over announcer at the beginning of the trailer makes it special, just as you hear it at Walt Disney World. Thank you for posting!
They even have the Sunflower scenes intact! I guess this was a few years before they edited it out. It's a shame they left it out of the Anthology DVD release back in 2000. Hopefully Disney will come to terms & put it back in in it's next release.
When they play this trailer at WDW's Great Movie Ride, it is edited big time. And not surprisingly, the black centaurette is one of the things excised.
They edited her out in 1969, so she hadn't disappeared yet. I'm still a little upset with Disney for putting her in that position in the first place... she shouldn't have had to serve a master, or so I believe. Oh well, that's the 1940's Disney for you...
I think it would've looked ok if they hadn't made her look like some kind of idiot. if they made her look graceful like all the other girls she would have looked fine and I wouldn't have paid notice. (I didn't think anyhting of a servent-master senario, just a girl helping another girl make herself look pretty. like girls in real life often do.)
Didn't they play this trailer along with trailers from other movies in the pre-show area fro the Great Movie Ride at the Disney-MGM Studios at Disney World?
brings back the old memories!
