  • Its funny how you filmed this with a guy named Omar (as it says in your vid description) because my name is Omar and I also have a Canon HV30 camcorder lol. btw what software did you use to edit this? Its a good independent short film u did

  • is everything with this camera autofocus?

  • @TyMcFly91 for the most part, yes.

  • Decent

  • Woow, caught me off guard with this one..

  • @MIZZIJR good or bad? either way, check out the other vids!

  • Comment removed

  • nice vid

  • Is there any other way to upload recordings from the camera (in my case Canon hv30) to the computer without a firewire?

  • @marrisarox hey, that's not possible. I've tried every solution out there. The only thing you can do is meet up with a friend who has a firewire port, transfer via their's to an external hard drive of your own that HAS a firewire port as well.

  • Nice job.

  • That's a pretty cool washer machine buddy.

  • crappy lens adapter

  • gelei grandão

  • Clamp lights? Nice job with those. Bravo.

  • How did you get this video in 1080p?

  • I really thought this video was cool...it came up because I'm looking at things done on the Vixia cams...and so then I read through the comments and thought it was cool how natural the lighting looks!

  • U guys used 2 cameras ? At 2:09 the other camera & mic is visible iguess

  • Great short production,

What shooting mode did you use?

    I'm guessing cinema mode?

Did you color correct in post, or did you just use a auto white balance?

    Great overall lighting also,

    A+++++++++

  • to tell you honestly, back when we shot this we were fairly new to using our cameras so we just used standard def. I used Clamp lights in the room and in post I just did basic levels and curves adjustments.

    thanks for the comment!

  • how did you get the blur around the edges?

  • We used a wide angle lens. It gave it distortion around the edges.

  • u can also apply a vignette in your editing software if you don't have a lens :)

  • Great. These fingers looks like sausage in a soy sauce. Or some not very carfull hammer user.

  • Good job! thanks!

  • at 2;00 i was really hoping for the broom to suddenly hit him

  • Pretty creepy. Nice work.

  • Spooky :P If that was your goal as i presume, you've certainly achieved it.

  • 2:08 Camera showing

  • What levels did you adjust to get this? Can you explain.

  • just basic level adjustment

    slight S Curve

    brought back some blacks

what look are you looking to achieve? my own video looks pretty basic to me haha

  • Hey did you have to do any color correcting on this video?

    it looks amazing!

i recently sold my gl2 and have been trying to find the perfect camera for skateboarding a bunch of friends are recomending the sony vx1000 or vx2100 but this seems by far better than any of those can you help me out

  • no color correcting done just levels adjustments.

    thanks man

I can tell you that I've been very happy with my hv30 and its almost going to be a year since I bought it.

  • does the camera have a mic input?

  • yes, only mini jack

  • sure does

but if you have an xlr mic you'll need an adapter.

  • did you have any attachments like a DoF adapter or anything. Was there anything done to the picture in post production. Just wondering because i was thinking about getting this camera and wanted to know how the picture looks

  • No adapter

only levels adjustments done in post

  • i was oooooohing at the part when he actually woke up lol tht was creepy man i want a hv30 so bad i have a sony dcr-hc52 handycam right now but i have no idea how to upload my videos to my computer from the dv tape :/

  • Thanks man, lol check out my latest video!

are you running a Mac or a PC?

  • a pc but in december i should be getting a mac but i want to find out how to upload them to to my pc first (:

  • Cool, Try getting a trial version of Sony Vegas 7. It's a fairly easy to understand editing program & it has some cool stuff. Once you have it, You'll be using that program to capture your video via a Firewire cable connected from your camera to your PC. Hope this helps!

  • thanks man yeah i think ima get a firewire cable today (:

  • awesome work dude!!!

    i like your style alot

what settings was your HV30 in for this??

    please reply, thanks!

  • it was shot in 60i standard and I think the cam was set to AV mode

  • Good job.

The picture quality was generally excellent. You made a real film.

  • thank you!! check out my latest video!

  • Man that was awesome. Great camera work. The shakiness gave it a more gritty feel. 10/10. Great job.

  • very nice work.

  • Lol, that was cool. Continue making films, please! Youtube needs more of this stuff, and now I'm going to watch it again..

  • THANK YOU! haha

we actually have been writing a new short movie and hoping to get it done by Halloween 2009!

  • Looks awesome, Any particular lens?

Very erie. I was waiting for that door in the background to just crack open a few inches or something though

  • thanks, we have wide angle lenses.

  • that swinging broom made me so uncomfortable.

    nice work dude!

  • The lighting and sound in your video kicked ass, guys.

What lights did you use and did you what kind of mic did you grab your sound with?

I'm about to purchase the HV30 and this video has def convinced me to head in that direction

  • Thanks man, we just used regular clamp lights you can buy anywhere. we used an azden mic and a rhode video mic. some sound effects were dubbed and recorded by me and the music was made on my casio keyboard.

  • Nice! I wasn't expecting much, but this was nice and eerie.

  • awesome..i want to use this idea for a future music video of mines.

  • Oh ya, this is scary!

  • nice work some shots seemed a bit long but it was still great overall ;)

  • this was great, actually kind of freaky. Great job

  • haha. this seemed rele cheesy at first, and towards the end i was on the edge of my seat!

  • looked awsome.

  • Very Nice.

  • Creepy! Cool :)

  • Curious why you didn't shoot 24p instead for a more filmic look?it did look great though.

  • We were having some pulldown removal problems with our software.

  • very good lighting in your short. good stuff :)

  • do you always wait until it finish ?

  • not sure what you mean by that??

  • I think he means do you sit there until the washing is finished.

    And nice video, too.

  • what a dumb bitch!

  • HV30 SuperCam !!!

  • really cool video. a couple questions:

1)what program did you edit this with ?

2)did you shoot this in 24p?

    thanks

  • Sony vegas 7

and it was shot in 60i!

  • thanks for the reply...

so seeing as this video is in HD, the consumer level of sony vegas is capable of editing HD video such as HDV? because i have sony vegas and am looking into buying an HD camcorder but I have heard you need the Sony Vegas platinum edition to edit HD footage

  • I've heard of platinum but not sure what it is

Sony vegas 7 is fine for editing HD.

not too sure about anything before that I've only used 7 and 8

    hope this helps!

  • alright thanks alot for the info!

  • could have been shorter

  • 3) As someone else said, get more close-ups of the actor's face next time, so he can convey the terror he's feeling to the audience with eye movement.

I liked the shot at 1:50. It was well-lit and it looked as though someone was watching. When the audience begins to think there's another presence, it's then suitable to use the hand-held POV shot - think Michael Myers' "behind the mask" shots in Halloween, as he stalks his teenage prey. *Creepy piano riff plays*

  • Also, suspense is conveyed to the audience very well if you use a few simple techniques: 1) Creepy music. You've got that. 2) Completely still, well-framed shots of the subject, using a tripod. With only one principle character, it conveys their isolation / vulnerability because the viewer isn't conscious of any hand-held filming - it acts as an omniscient eye that the audience can look through objectively, which allows them to suspend disbelief. Don't centre your subject too much, also.

  • I just got an HV30 the other day. Too bad I need a better computer before I can edit any footage!

Still, I've been playing with the features, and I can see that you're using the manual focus. This can be used effectively by zeroing in on the foreground or background first (whichever you want to highlight) and *then* recording. So when the washing machine is programmed, for example, it could have been dialed in a little more clearly. Or when he's loading the basket.

  • Very nice, man! For a more relistic film look, you might add some blur to the credits, cause it looks to sharp acording to the rest of the footage. It has to look a bit washed out!

  • thanks for the advice man!

  • hey that was really good do you think you can send me the link of the microphone u used to record the audio? thanks

  • thanks guys for all your critique appreciate it very much, especially because we are barley learning!!

  • I suggest throwing in a couple of extreme closeups where you can't see the top of the head or the neck. It brings the audience closer to the main subject and builds more tension. Also, try not to center things so often. Slightly off center works better. Might have been a little scarier if the hand suddenly wrapped around his mouth and pulled him, then he snaps awake. Just some thoughts... take them or leave them, but overall I like what you did here. Loved the closeup of the washer.

  • Very good job.

  • nice short film man, good job. I'm glad i just got my self a hv30

  • hey man which is the best canon camera for shooting short movies or mive shorts....for under 1000...so far i know its between the hv30, hf10 and hf11...let me know what u think.

  • hmm not sure if there is a best, I know the hv30 you can add a 35mm adapter for over a grand and use a nice expensive boom mic and you got yourself a nice setup

  • hv 30

it has a knob for the manual focus...the other ones have a button that you have to push and its just lame. hv30 is the best out of those 3.

  • thanx alot...I was kinda leaning towards the hv30 anyways but i needed other peoples thoughts as well.

  • this is some crazy shit...I really want this camera...would u recommend it? Do u have any extras on the camera? One last question....what do u need to put ur music from ur keyboard onto the pc...onto the vid.....i have a casio keyboard and i have a pc...what else do I need. Good job again on the video. Pretty suspenseful for ur first time.

  • thanks buddy, I'd def recommend it if you your on a budget. Extras? as in? Mostly all the videos on my channel are with this camera. What I use is Presonus firebox and I just run my keyboard direct into Sony acid 6. Then as I'm watching the video I play to it. That's how I do it however there are a ton of ways to record your keyboard onto your computer.

  • extras as in adapters or any lenses(not that I know what the hell they do) I'm trying to find out......exactly what is presonus firebox? does that connect from ur pc to the keyboard? sony acid 6? Is that a program....sorry for asking dumb questions but I been trying to figure all this stuff out b4 I get my hv30 in 1 month!!!!. Thx for ur help again.

  • we both have wide angle lens adapters. Mine is a generic brand and my partners is a rayonex. A firebox is a firewire interface you can plug mics into it or direct instruments. Sony acid is a audio recording/editing program I use it for music. audio was recorded with either my rhode video mic or my friends azden I cant remember

  • so all i really need is that box ur talking about and a mic? Does the box cost a lot of money? Oh yeah one more question...they say it has no usb connection right? They say i need a firewire connection but i dont know wtf that is....can u explain to me. How did u upload ur vids? Thx for replying and helping me out.

  • I wouldn't recommend buying the firebox its pricey and its mainly used for recording music. A firewire port is just like a usb but better/faster/heavy duty, most computers have them but some don't. as far as uploading it depends what editing software you are using and BELIEVE ME its not easy to render when you have a sluggish desktop. Just get yourself and editing software and through trial and error you'll figure it out

  • oh ok so whats a better way to bring music from the keyboard into the pc?

  • it really depends on your keyboard and your computer.

  • alright

  • I actully really liked it

  • pretty good video man, keep up the awesome work.

    -BOB_O

  • I thought you did well. What kind of training or previous experience do you have? How long did it take to shoot and edit to completion?

  • thanks, I have no previous training and they only experience would be an old sony hi 8 camera and I didn't have a computer to edit back then!

It was an hour-hour & a half shoot.

it took about 30-45 min to edit the scenes and another 30 min to make the music on my keyboard.

  • Awesome man, you have some real potential. I say immerse yourself in it and see what happens. Life is too short to live it doing stuff other people think you should be doing.

If you enjoy this, go for it.

  • Good job !!! but thing how did you film yourself from different angles ?

How many camcorders did you have ?

Did you use any program on the color on the footage to make it look how it look ?

  • great excersize. keep up the good work. One thing though, I almost reached my breaking point in the beginning. A little slow.

  • I agree thanks for the critique. I didn't really notice till I watched it a couple of times. That's part of the learning process though.

  • It only felt slow because there was no connection to the audience yet. The opening cut we feel distanced from the subject because he is coming in from another room - entering our space. Establish and connection between the audience and the subject as soon as possible. This can be done by make the opening cut in first person, or letting us share something personal with the subject in a close up. A good opening cut would have been picking up dirty boxers off the floor in bedroom.

  • shits intense!!!!
