@Spottedpool42 I second your opinion, Indiana is a great state to live in. It is big enough to get noticed yet small enough that one still feels like a citizen despite the Federal fist.
When I was little, my father had the good fortune to accompany Louis at a Chicago concert. Dad is a pianist. At the end of the set, Louis said to my father, "Kid, You've GOT it!" Treasured words. How much better does it get than having your idol tell you how great YOU are?
Listen to this song at the same time you listen to Donna Lee by Charlie Parker. The version on youtube works fine. They are meant to be on top of each other. It's mindblowing.
@levanyzzuf ME, i have to leave Indiana for college, all the way to New Mexico. I almost broke down in tears when I went to my brother's Elementary school choral concert and they sung this song. I will miss it forever, nowhere is like my hometown of Noblesville.
Lovely clip of the All Stars but with a rather unknown bass player - one Mort Herbert; and he isn't very good. Arvell Shaw was Louis' regular bassist - and he is great.
Let's not be too harsh. You can fall way short of being as wonderful as Arvell Shaw and still be pretty darn good. True, not the greatest bass solo ever, but solid time and a big booming sound even through 1950's TV technology - all with mile-high action and gut strings.
I could be wrong, I think his playing is very good. He may not have been, Satchmo's regular bass player, but if he could not play well, he would not have played with Satchmo.
That is nonsense. Louis was often lumbered with very mediocre sidemen - Joe Glaser had little idea about music and sometimes took on the first man who was available (and cheap!). Besides, not everybody wanted this gig; it meant playing the same tunes every night in the shadow of Louis.
Glazer did the hiring at times true ...but Satch would never allow mediocre sidemen! And that's part of the gig...playing the same tunes every night! Guys like Jack Teagarden Arvell Shaw Billy Kyle managed to do it and probably enjoyed it.
Donna Lee huh?
