@pieword : Yes he did. Joe Higgins was a neighbor of mine when I was a kid in the late 1950s and early 1960s and the Rifleman, Chuck Connors (among a lot of other actors) would come and visit he and his family regularly. Chuck Connors sometimes carried his famous Rifleman TV show Winchester in the trunk of his metallic turquoise Lincoln Continental and would occasionally pull it out to show us kids. Quite exciting!
@smoooth517 : Joe Higgins, the "Dodge Sheriff" and a character actor in movies and TV was also my neighbor in Northridge, California in the late 1950s and early 1960s. His two sons were friends of mine when we were kids and they were the same ages as my brother and me.
@Razastar1971 for a challenger and a charger!!! lol right? id do the same but go back to 69 and get a coronet 440 and maybe a dart gts or a copo nova!!
lol or 3 grand for the car and the other 3 for the surcharges!! damn insurance companies
The actor playing the cop in the video is named Joe Higgins. Great guy. I spent two weeks at his house in Hollywood (1974) after he married a good friend's mother! I also owned a 1970 'Cuda for many years. Great memories. Too bad this old footage isn't in better condition.
Super fantastic !! I have thought about this funny great commercial for decades !! This advertisement is an out of this world classic ! Why don't they remake it ? Oh, I do remember another version of this same ad, when the sheriff says "Boy, you're in a heap of trouble !
Haha! Nice JETZ. I actually emailed Dodge asking them if they'd like to reinstate the safety sheriff campaign, and they said no. The reason I asked was because my grandfather was the safety sheriff himself, Joe Higgins. I still have all of his gear from the commercials, the uniform, holster, even the gun. I'm a proud owner of a 71 Challenger and in the market for a new challenger as my daily driver. Maybe I'll email dodge again...although the current freedom commercials aren't bad either
The greatest decade ever. Best clothes, best music, girls with long straight hair, best TV, best movies, the drive-in and going to it in the best cars 1970 'Cuda, Superbird, Challenger, Nova SS, Boss 429, man talk about American Muscle at it finest 1970 was the year!!!
Can anyone give me an advise. I got a 70 challenger with less motor almost done with all the work's that needed to be done. It originally came with a 318. What I motor can anyone reccomend that should put in. We can skip the big blocks (no money for that) but I do want something as a daily driver. Peace to all.
A 360 will bolt right in, its about the same physical size of a 318 and can make some serious horsepower if done right. Parts are pretty available and not too expensive. The 360 is a nice engine for a daily driver as well. If the car has the A904 automatic be sure to go through it. Also if the rear end is a 7 1/4 you will need to swap it out with an 8 3/4 since a mild built 360 would tear up that small 7 1/4 rear differential. Hope this helps, I'm building one myself. George
@gschoneman Thank you thats very knd of you. Due to finacial reason I wont be able to finish my project til later this year but your advise is just what I needed, Thank you again, Peace.
Have two guys in a Prius at a stoplight, when a Civic with a massive spoiler and bodykit pulls up. The light turns green and both drivers put the pedal to the wood, and the cars accelerate gently from the line. One guy gets out of the Prius (while it's "acclerating") and walks home. The race continues for a few seconds, then a Dodge Challenger blasts past both of them and stops at the next light. It's the guy who got out of the Prius!
@JETZcorp Now I must say, I dont like import bashing. And halfway through reading your post I was planning on replying & talking trash about American cars.... HOWEVER, when I got to the end, I must admit, that would be a great damn commercial :)
@juliojrdn No, I didn't. I just assumed they wouldn't even consider it, but after seeing the Challenger commercial dubbed, "Freedom" I don't think they're as politically-correct as I had thought.
The motor went into my 69 Roadrunner and the body I sold off, this was back in late 70's early 80's. I miss the Roadrunner more, had to sell it in 86 when my wife and I moved out of state.
My dream is to hollow out the body of a 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T and take out the engine, put in a Fuel-Injected 392 Hemi V8, a puxton supercharger, racing tires, anti sway bar suspension, and an automatic transmission. NO NOS! IT RUINS YOUR ENGINE!!!
stop watching the fast and the furious its not NOS and it doesnt ruin your engine unless your an idiot and learn mechanics by the fast and the furious, and dont ruin a classic, do it to a modern car, might be a decent one then.
I had a 1970 340 Challenger.I install Hurst Hi-Jackers air shocks- I ran the air line up to in front of drivers seat though the floor, jacked it all the way up & when they would pull me over- I would wait till they went to measure bumper height & reach down to start releasing air & I'd let her down. What a Rush to see look on Cops face! She was dark green w/ black bumble bee stripe around ass end. I surely miss her!!
Love the challenger. Not a fan of this video though. I got a few good videos on my page of the new challenger and a review about it. It is pretty nice.
I used to have an autographed picture of him, "Sheriff Joe Higgins"-I lost it over the years-he apeared at a Dodge dealership here in Houston, or something when I was a boy, he, and these commercials were hugely popular
@SwiftJonny that would be awesome! but the sad thing is back when that commercial was made you would see the dodge challenger on the race track for nascar, so they could say it was a race car. but now nascar all looks the same and they arent really stock cars anymore...
Man I have been looking for this for 30 years! Every time I see somebody pulled over by a cop I would say, "You're in a heap o' trouble, boy!" and my wife thought I was crazy!
Look i wouldnt havent opened my mouth if i didnt drive the old challenger, it was a red 1971 challenger that i drove, and i must say it wasnt the best built quality, neither was the ride, it was bumpy, brakes were made of paper or something, it handled like a goat and neither was it comfy. but i havent tried the new one yet. and the 0-60 time was redicilous, at 5.8 seconds
Now I know where Jackie Gleason got his character "Sherrif Buford T. Justice"! For the Smokey and the Bandit movies in the late 70's. That's too close to be a coincidence. Awesome.
mee too, i know it wont happen because i live in a shithole called UK where there are'nt any Challengers and it would cosrt alot to run. If i lived in USA i would plan on buying one though.
I own a 74 challenger last of its kind and Im love it theirs nothing like driving a muscle car nobody else has ,I know you know because I know its cool as hell .
Great clip. I'm sure "Smokey and the Bandit" was based on these ads even though Bandit drove a Firebird. This sherrif was played by a guy named Joe Higgins. I got his autograph on a Dodge bumper sticker at an auto show back then. Thanks for the memory.
Those were REAL cars! Maybe Dodge should bring back slogans like "You could be Dodge Material" back, especially when the new Challenger comes out! Sure miss the old ones! Love this post! Thanks for sharing!
beatifull car but not as nice as the 1967 firebird 400 hp and the 1969 G.T.O 400 hp my dad owned both but while he was racing the gto he fishtailed hit a pot hole and flipped it
Those piece of shit ricers are only good when they are new. Muscle cars appreciate their value over time, just like that challenger on the video. Ride in any 1970's ricer and ill bet you'd look silly besides them american muscle.
vote up ! if you love challenger

Those were REAL cars! Maybe Dodge should bring back slogans like "You could be Dodge Material" back, especially when the new Challenger comes out! Sure miss the old ones! Love this post! Thanks for sharing!

Those piece of shit ricers are only good when they are new. Muscle cars appreciate their value over time, just like that challenger on the video. Ride in any 1970's ricer and ill bet you'd look silly besides them american muscle.
