  • Im getting in a 5.5kw vaccuum system for my CNC, will I have to resurface the MDF to 3mm for better suction?

  • @djayness, yes you will. Surfacing the spoilboard does two things, first it removes the hard sealing layer that was sprayed onto the MDF during manufacture. Secondly, it makes sure that the entire surface is true, flat and perfectly parallel with your X and Y axes.

  • @f15sim I use to find that my spoilboards warped within days, would this change if I got a dehumidifier? I assume that the warping is due to moisture.

  • @djayness, Even if the spoilboard were to warp while you're not using it, the thickness won't change noticeably. When you turn your vac system back on, it will pull the spilboard flat again.

I'm in Washington State and I've never seen a spoilboard warp - are you working underwater or something? *laughs*

    Good luck!

  • Boomerize, the MDF that I use has a "hardened" surface on both sides that is not very porous. In order to be able pull air through the material, I needed to remove all of that hardened face. It's typically about 1/8" deep.

For vacuum, I'm using two Fein Turbo III dust collectors instead of a vacuum "pump".

    Thanks for your comment!

  • does both sides of the mdf have to be surfaced to remove the "finish"? and what size is your vacuum pump? Thanks
