  • "Well, I wasn't expecting the Spanish Inquisition!" ...

  • @AlistairAI Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!

  • Almost one million google.com now say "Benny Hill considered funnier than Monty Python"!

  • @Bestmanme08 Almost one million google.com postings that is.

  • I thought this was composed by Johann Gambolputty de von Ausfern -schplenden -schlitter -crasscrenbon -fried -digger -dingle -dangle -dongle -dungle -burstein -von -knacker - thrasher -apple -banger -horowitz -ticolensic -grander -knotty -spelltinkle -grandlich -grumblemeyer -spelterwasser - kurstlich -himbleeisen -bahnwagen -gutenabend -bitte -ein -nürnburger -bratwustle -gerspurten -mitz -weimache - auuber -hundsfut -gumberaber -shönendanker-kalbsfleisch -mittler -aucher von Hautkopft of Ulm.

  • by jove I have not heard 'owt so good as this since 1893

  • Ah, that bell! Who decided on that?

Other than that, I liked the recording. Thanks!

  • @Amethystasheryn Probably JPS himself, since it's in the sheet music. This is the official music of the Ministry of Silly Walks, so why not ring a bell as you play it?

  • Right right, stop playing that song. It is very very silly. Now, there is one thing i will not have in my company, and that is silliness. Now nobody likes a good laugh better than me... except for maybe my wife... and her friends... and Captain Williams.. But I will not have any silliness in the military. Right. Get on with it... get ON with it!!

  • preobrazhensky march is much better...

  • Awkward Bell...... lol

  • At least find a bell that fits into the chord progression!!! =-) Great recording, I love that antique sound.

  • @Corollaboi I think the idea is that it deliberately does not fit with the chords - since the Liberty Bell got cracked, so it is supposed to be a bum note!

  • sousa

  • I didn't want to work in a pet shop.

I WANTED TO BE A LUMBERJACK!

  • THIS, IS AN EX-PARROT! lol

  • @donaldengine9 THIS PARROT IS NO MORE!

  • How appropriate to start with John Cleese saying "And now for something Completely different." XD

  • Even back in 1917, the Three Sacred Words (Ni, Pang, and Niii-Wong) were carefully guarded.

  • Benny Hill Show considered funnier than Monty Python by two TV stations (WOR and WLVI)! Read the Benny Hill Story at amazon for more on this!

  • This song is so much fun to play but it always kills my jaw after the second time through the trio xD

  • And Now For Something Completly Different.

  • Great stuff!

  • ALBATROSS!

  • :-)

    Regards, J.

  • Do you get any wafers with it?

  • @Trymlokk can i get wafers with it?

  • @knoxklay11 'Course you don't get fucking wafers with it!

  • That's no ordinary rabbit!

  • Vigo894, :-)

    Regards, J

  • And now for something completely different....

    ITS!!

    Good times :)

  • Blakesquakers, Glad you liked it, thanks for watching.

    Regards, J.

  • nice sound qualety

  • Odenviking, Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it.

    Regards, J.

  • John Phillip Sousa, one of America's great composers. Thanks for posting this and keep that player in great condition. Those cylinder players are extremely rare. The first time I saw one was when I visited Edison's birthplace in Milan, OH in 2005.

  • Woodencoasterfan, Thanks for watching, fear not-I'll take good care of my Amberola 50!

    Regards, J.

  • i have to memorize this(and another piece) in one week o.o, school starts monday and im going camping later today, saturday and sunday......no wonder that one kid quit

  • Same here.

Have to memorize this, king cotton, el capitan. Soon i will die cos i have to play alot of fast songs. 6/8. I dun wanna quit band cos if i quit i'm such a chicken.xD

Tats wat i promised myself. But so many high notes!!! Gonna die!!!

Playing the barritone. Have to master this in 1 months time. Dies. Lots of my other members quit too. five. But its sad.

  • ouch we're doing this one and our marching show (n the reg. stuff warm-ups, onwisconsin etc.)n thats it so its alot worse for u XD i FINALLY got some of it down i play the flute though so u can just imagine how high those notes get. Last year we had a choice for parade music: dictorate march or this.....we chose dictorate n i now see why. This week 3 other people dropped: another flute, a lcarinet and an alto sax. 6/8?!?!?! all of them?!?!?!

  • Yup. All 6/8.

And we lost 2 clarinet and 2 saxaphone.

1 trombone. But i'm so glad they didn't plan to march for the upcoming performance. We're gonna sit down! Yeay! But under hot sun. haizz...

  • ouch i thought that playing in 110 degrees was bad but atleast we're moving around XD sitting is under the sun is worse than moving around in a block

  • Aloha2302, Good luck-I'm sure you'll get it down pat!!!!

    Regards, J.

  • MONTY PYTHON'S FLYYYYYYING CIIIIIIRRRRCUUUUUS!!!! HELLO POLLY!!!!!! (dead parrot sketch, member?)

  • oh this is sooo fast. no way i can memorize to this.

  • For some reason I keep waiting for that squashing sound that comes at the very end of this on Monty Python's Flying Circus...

  • once when I was at my harents my mother had a record on and this song came. I started laughing like crazy, and she didnt understand anything. :P

  • Kyrastube, I always chuckle a little myself!

    Regards, J.

  • Mega-props to you for posting this. Old recordings need to be heard! And I like marches.

  • Ummm. I like it, and i know this is the actual theme. But i am playing almost a completely different version of this song on bells tomorrow for my concert -_- I might post me playing it on bells... Nice recording xD

  • Yodaman234, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I hope your performance went well.

    Regards, J.

  • What an excellent quality recording! How lucky you are to have this.

  • It's...

  • :-)

  • I'm playing this in my Band concert tomorrow night :) I was on the flute part but now I'm on piccolo now!! :)

  • BandGeek824, Thanks for watching! I hope you had a great concert!

    Regards, J.

  • It's so wonderful, fascinating & charming to see a working cylinder player like yours! During WWI, Mr. Sousa served with the U.S. Navy, training bands based in Chicago.

Hint to trombone players (of which I'm one) - the trio passage of this march is played easiest using 4th & 5th positions (for the best intonation).

  • Pgh45rpms, Thank you for your kind words. I'm pleased you enjoyed the recording. It's one of my favorites.

    Regards, J.

  • I agree with Melon.

Although Monty Python is equally as awesome I did know it from Hogs of War first. What an amazing game :)

    Ty for the video :)

  • it will always be known for the Hogs of War theme tune

  • Melonhead82, That was a new one on me, never heard of that 'til you mentioned it. Thanks for watching, I hope you enjoyed it.

    Regards, J.

  • Your welcome.

  • does anyone else think it sounds kinda slow?

  • Yeah...it could just be the record player though...

  • Mahavishnu009, The phonograph is set to 160 rpm. I do believe the speed is correct for this recording. I also have the DD pressing of this performance and IIRC it's at the same tempo. Thanks for watching.

    Regards, J.

  • Jamnj9, I do believe this is the correct tempo.

    Regards, J.

  • yea my high school band is playing this. it is the correct tempo

  • fun tune to play :P thanks for posting

  • Iolfag93, I'm glad you enjoyed it, Thanks!

    Regards, J.

  • You should have let Michael say "it's..."!

  • Marksoutof10, Nobody's perfect! ;-) I wish I had made a bottomless vase and reached my hand up through the bottom hold the flowers as well!

    Regards, J.

  • jeez middle school?

    thats pretty beast

    nice job

  • Thank you. I was just trying to think of the name of the march, though I was 90% certain it is a Sousa march.

  • On a cylender, must be 100 years old but still a marvellous and insipring march.

    Paul

  • Paul, ninety-one years and counting. The march itself was written in 1893. It's as fun and vibrant as when it was written. I'm pleased you enjoyed it.

    Regards, J.

  • New York has its own Military!? No wonder they had less crime back then.

  • we play this song in my school band! i play percussion! drums rock!

  • Youhowardtube, It must be a fun number to perform! I'll bet everybody recognizes it instantly. Thanks for the comment.

    Regards, J.

  • I play the tuba and barry sax, but is it me or does that plant look like its moving?

  • Nathin20712, Yes they're happy flowers! ;-)

    Regards, J.

  • Sphincternater109, Is it? Well I wish you success! Thanks for stopping by.

    Regards, J.

  • LOL! Thanks for the little Python tribute at the begining. You have a sense of humor.

  • Lockbar, Thank you, I try. ;-)

    Regards, J.

  • I once had this record on a an Edison diamond-disc. The other side was the same band performing "At A Georgia Camp Meeting". The Monty Python theme on one side, and a ragtime classic on the other. Unusually hip for an Edison record from circa the first World War!

  • Biographnovelty, I have that DD as well sadly it's not a very good pressing. The 'Liberty Bell March', 1893 is one of Sousa's very best pieces. It's always been a favorite of mine. Hope you ejoyed the clip. Regards, J.

  • i notice the leaves moving at loud moments! ^^

  • Krimskrams, I think it's just the camera man's air conditioner in the window on the left. Regards, J.

  • Wonderful! And I notice this version has the (liberty) bell ringing in the D part.

  • Rchandos, Thank you, so glad you enjoyed the clip. Regards, J.

  • OMFG! A friend of ours just found me a copy of this! I've heard its hard to find. is that true?

  • Kashito91, I don't know. I have the BA and DD of this recording-both of which I just stumbled upon so to speak. I've never heard mention of this as being particularly rare. It's a great recording-enjoy it! Regards, J.

  • DD? I only know of the following: Brown wax, Black wax, Amberol, Blue Amberol, Edison Concert Cylinders and Edison Royal Purple Amberol Cylinders. What's DD?

  • Kashito91, A DD is an Edison Diamond Disc. IIRC all later Blue Amberols were dubbed from DDs. I'm not sure, but I believe this one is a dub. Regards, J.

  • Wow, this is great! I'm in a military band and this is wonderful historical information!

  • Marredsun, Happy to be of assistance. And very glad you enjoyed the recording! Regards, J.

  • Last year I played this song in the school band. I play clarinet. We also marched in the parades and played it.

  • Johnthecrawford,It is a great number for marching bands. Hope you enjoyed the clip and thanks for the comment. Regards, J.

  • all this makes me think about is monty python...

    ITS WONDERFUL!

  • Gabyallufix, This march did get an amazing new lease on life thanks to Monty Python-that's where I first heard it. It is able to stand on it's own though, it's a great march! So glad you enjoyed it. Regards, J.

  • wow. this sounds awesome.

i have to play this for band.

and now i appreciate my band teacher lmfao.

  • Themalators, Thank you, so glad you enjoyed it. Good luck with the band's rendition! Regards, J.

  • Thanks, yea, we're playing the song for a festival next friday.

  • Themalators, You'll be great! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you all! Regards, J.

  • I've only heard the Liberty Bell March played like this once, and it's now! I'm quite literally stunned at the quality of the record. It must have stood the test of time pretty well!

  • URhnsi35, Thank you for the kind words. I'm so glad you enjoyed it. The sound from Edison BAs is impressive. Regards, J.

  • love the start and it's so interesting hearing one of these and the sound quality of it!!

  • Kyanella, So very glad you enjoyed it. Thank you. Regards, J.

  • Return visit to again hear my favorite march.

Nice clear presentation adds rich icing to an already great cake! FIVE STARS.

  • G., Thank you so much-you are too kind! YF, J.

  • ima 7th grader, we r gonna play it 4 da may fete parade in palo alto, also, fuzzbear6240 responded to every comment

  • Blackheartrhythm, Good luck in May performing 'Liberty Bell'! It's a fun tune. I hope you enjoyed the clip. Thanks for the comment. Regards, J.

  • My favorite march of all that Sousa composed, and this performance is a pip! GREAT sound, too. In point of fact, this Blue Amberol is

among the best of the march recordings issued by the Edison Company. Sincere thanks for this video!

  • Gmmix, Thank you so much for the kind words. This is a personal favorite of mine as well. For a dubbed BA it does sound pretty darn good! YF, J.

  • I would take this quality over CD's anyday, like the sound

  • Ryan, Thank you for the kind words, glad you liked it. It sounds even better in person. I was amazed the first time I heard a Blue Amberol. I thought they couldn't sound as good as discs, but they do! Regards, J.

  • What a sound!!! More more more I can't get enough of your cylinder posts!

  • Osiris1st, Thank you so much. My purpose is to entertain and hopefully, illuminate just a bit. I very glad you are enjoying my little clips. Regards, J.

  • what year is this recording?

  • Edison Blue Amberol 3220 "Liberty Bell March" (John Philip Sousa) New York Military Band. Year of first release: 1917. Played on my Amberola 50. Regards, J.

  • great, thanks

  • Thank you all..for the kind words and for your efforts to preserve and present this great music as well! There is much more to follow, and yes mrrk, we already have a closer view point clip in the can. Hopefully we'll have it up tonight. Regards, J.

  • Great! There arent really enough good cylinder videos on youtube.....yet. Excellent!!

  • Excelent video. One of the best cylinders I have on this site. More please , oh & could we have a closer look at the cylinder as it plays? Thanks.

  • I fully second skinnyblinddude's comment, thank you so much for preserving these rare recordings!

  • Hi J,

Terrific recording! Most cylinders I've heard sound really distorted. I suspect it is because of improperly restored or maintained machines. Yours sounds very nice. Thank you for your efforts to preserve these machines for future generations...that is, if the world lasts another generation.

  • W, The Amberola 50 only plays 4 minute celluloid Blue Amberols-the newest and sturdiest cylinders IMHO. Also I bought this machine from a friend who made sure everything was ship-shape for me. Glad you liked it-more to follow ;-) Regards, J.
