I think bruce wrote thisin the early 90's,a time which his music went largely unnoticed,but if you dig a little deeper,he wrote some seriously special stuff during this time,book of dreams and wish i were blind are two other examples

@supermario103 Thanks for the warm welcome!! I have always heard that Springsteen fans are some of the nicest people around. This has actually also been my experience.. I often find myself laughing at people who enjoy that Disney, Pink Buble gum rock crap (Jonas Bros, Miley) and I feel so thankful I have discovered Springsteen. Half of the 'artists' who receive airplay today will be one hit wonders.. names people won't recall in a few years. But Bruce? his music will be immortal. It is classic

I have just heard this song for the first time and it literally brought tears to my eyes. I have only really become a true fan over the past two years and I have only heard a limited number of his songs.. this means I still have a lifetime to discover his amazing music and read deeply into his lyrics, their symbology and meaning, I have never understood how he can capture any emotion, any scenario so immaculately.. it makes you feel. An amazing storyteller and a legend in my eyes.

He's been doing it for 40 years. Happy wasn't deemed good enough for release on a "regular" album. It's on Tracks (1998) 66 that had mostly been withheld, except for a few as B-sides of singles.

He's given away songs that would have been the best songs of anyone else's career. E.G., Because the Night.

The entire, "Born to Run" (1975) and "Darkness on the Edge of Town," (1978) albums are masterpieces. Listen to the album version of "For You" (1973) and then the Hammersmith version (1975).

The Wild, The Innocent, and The E Street Shuffle is ridiculously underrated; its by far his most experimental, creative album (incident on 57th street and New York City Serenade)
