The problem with Trophy is that is uses a shotgun style projectile to disable the detonator on the incoming RPG, so not only can Trophy cause collateral damage in itself, it leaves unexploded ordnance lying around
in march 30 2006, the trophy was ready to use. in 2006, on lebanese war for battle against hezzbollah, is the trophy was used as a tested system armour? if right, i think trophy was failed..
@heavy246 that was the system firing. it doesn't neutralize the missiles with magic, it uses its own explosions (obviously causing much less damage than the missiles themselves)
@USMCkid89 yeah...they chose Raytheon's Quick Kill system which in 2006 was supposed to be ready in 2011, but at AUSA in 2009 that date moved to 2017...
I think this was just a test, they didn't want to lose their shiny stryker to a RPG-7 in a TEST. It was just to show it could hit things. And it is awesome from what I can tell.
bullshit.. Drozd was the first and was deployed in 1983, it fires a counter projectile with explodes near the incoming missile, rocket, tank round etc
Arena is a newer APS, works similar, but more effective, faster reaction time, better hit and kill abilities.
a 20kg mortar could never be fast enough to intercept anything and exploding would do a lot more damage then the incoming RPG round or whatever. The APS cal is 107mm, if im correct, that could be something around 3kg.
Anyway Russian were first with APS and in this vid the RGP wasnt destroyed.. thats means Trophy is not effective enough.. Its also proven by the fact that this RPG round wasnt even aimed at the vehicle (afraid APS could fail?) and the counter projectile was fired from the side and not the front where the RPG was comming from, why so?
3kg is the warhead i meant, overall weight cannot be determined exactly, due to the amount, size of shrapnel elements and material is unknown. Visually its approximately the size of a PG-7V rocket.
You should keep in mind that Drozd was the first and 70% effective. Its also combat tested.
Arena is a later APS and is 85% effective. T-90s have also Shtora-1 optical jammers installed. Together they provide almost 100% protection from laser guided munition
Heh, the Russians are always making new stuff now. But this thing has a couple advantages over the Arena. Trophy weighs about 1/2 as much as Arena for one thing, and doesn't hurt nearby troops with it's projectile. Arean uses almost a super shotgun blast on the incoming projectile, which will destroy the projectile and any friendly infantry nearby as well. Trophy makes a direct hit on the targets warhead so, even if it still keeps going it won't do much more then dent stuff.
Trophy if far from being ready to deploy! Russians have Drozd and Arena systems already in mass production since 1990s! They are way more effective. they work a bit different, on another principle, though.
But the projectile was not aimed at the vehicle! And the detonator is still intact, it wasnt hit (if it would, it would explode)! If the RPG had hit the vehicle it could do serious damage. This is not a successful interception, what if there would be people behind that vehicle or a car, and the RPG hits them at speed over 300m/s?? at this speed it does not need to explode at all to penetrate up to 100mm of armor or kill someone!
The detonator is not intact, it has been hit and neutralized to avoid detonation. If there are people standing around getting RPG's shot at them, they are just plain old stupid. In case you didn't know, RPG's are designed to kill. And FYI, they don't penetrate 100mm of armor. Please get your facts straight before you comment again.
RPGs dont penetrate 100m of steel?! Dude have you shot an RPG? I have.. I shot an RPG round, without explosive material, at a concrete wall ~ 1m thick. The round almost came out the other side, you know why? because AP RPG rounds have a steel spike at the tip to penetrate armor, they are effective up to 300mm of armor without detonating (HEAT warhead - 600mm/tandem - 800mm). M1s, IFVs get killed by those in Iraq!
and? the projectile wasn't intercepted, was a lil flash, but nothin' happened to it. It just missed! The projectile wasnt actually aimed at the vehicle, look at the shadow!!! LOL
The projectile was intercepted and neutralized. I'm not going to sit her and have a little tug of war with you, but I saw the defeated RPG after the test and unless it pierced itself, I would have to say that it was not a miss.
I'd hate to be dismounted infantry around that thing. Ouch.

Oh that's right...it's so much worse than the 150m ring of collateral damage from ARAT1 and ARAT2?

@StrykerDemo 150m collateral? That's a fuel air bomb.

trophy wasnt on the Israeli tank in lebanon war 2.
plus Israel destroyed half of beirut id say its a win.

How come this system was used in 2006?
walidot 2 years ago
israel made 2 anti RPG system: trophy and the iron fist. US bought one of them (i think)
kidi1232 3 years ago
what was the first explosion?
heavy246 3 years ago
The first explosion is the Trophy. The shock wave hits the missile and changed it's angle, so it passed the troop carrier and exploded nearby.
Shnorkle 3 years ago
Not a shock wave. The system fires a projectile at the incoming RPG to disable it. Like shooting a duck with birdshot.

trophy was rejected by us because it required to much passive armor between the explosive reactive armor and the crew cab

i mean i wish the Trophy contractors reached the US ARMY before the others did.
the US ARMY turned down the trophy system stating they have one of their own that they are testing even though the Trophy was %100 tested and ready.
they are assholes if you ask me.

USMCkid89,
israel allready offered it to US army
USA army rejected trophy and working on a new anti RPG system.
adir999 3 years ago
Yep, its better to develope one your own so you will gain the experience, and the know how.
Plus, it could learn from several criticisms of the trophy.

there is one even better now
called iron fist check it out

Trophy is way more effective than the Arena system.
just wish those contractors reached the US army before the arena ones did.
also the Trophy does not use projectiles to counter attack Anti tank munitions/missiles.
Instead it disables the warhead by emitting a invisible 360degree shield around the vehicle.
which then makes the projectile a dummy round.
Maybe the US Marines or US NAVY will buy the trophy system. i hope anyways

Copied Arena ))))

The US army tested this system in the USA and it was 30 for 30. amazing. the only flaw was that it hit one of the RPG tails instead of the head.

The Drozd and Arena systems are more developed, and field-tested. The Trophy APS leaves much to be desired, in my opinion.
linkchrono1955 4 years ago
Soviets made something similar in 1983 - "Drozd" first APS ever. looks very very similar, actually, the same.
Rastakzzz 4 years ago
You have no clue what you are talking about. "Drozd" was firing 20 kg mortar full of shrapnel.

trophy doesn't destroy the entire missile, but hits the war head, destroying the threat.

107 mm projective weighting 3 kg? :) Drozd also has very limited coverage: -+ 40 grad.

it's a pity most modern threats the US have to face are not optically guided then. rpg remain dumbfire rockets

Is it "all around" system?. I mean do dead angles exist? As one poster pointed out - target was not stryker itself
