Actually they were called Black but in Spanish and it was Negro. If they were mixed they were called Mulattoes not Hispanic. Look up Black Ladino. They were actually called Negro Ladino which means Latinized black. Basically stripped of their African culture and language & given a new culture the Latin culture just like African Americans now speak English and have a new American culture. However you all didn't turn into Anglo Saxons or Caucasians even though we know African Americans r mixed to.

I mean Dominicans share a closer relationship genetically to Haitians then they do Spaniards yet they discriminate against Haitians. @TwinBullet europeans normally identify themselves according to their nationality, and not their race. the idea of 'black' and 'white' people came from americans, and not europeans. most people in the world identify themselves according to their national origin, and not the color of their skin. colorism and racism is a major problem here in the U.S. due to 400 years of slavery, especially since its only been a little over 100 years since slavery ending here in the U.S.

African Americans for the most part share the same Culture as White Americans but don't call themselves Anglos or Afro Anglos. However their has been a effort in other countries around Latin America to end the Hispanic/Latino false tag & be called Afro Descendants or Afro Descendente. Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru & Argentina have started the campaigns & organizations so people can be aware of who they are Their is even a effort on the east coast promoting awareness to self identify correctly

Dominicans state they are a mix raced nation & this is the reason they state they are not black. However, even African Americans are a mixed race because the majority of African Americans have European dna in them due to not just Spanish slave masters but English slave masters horrible violating their slaves. Take for example Snoop Dogg & Charles Barkley who took DNA test that prove they have a small percentage of European ancestry. African Americans don't say they are Caucasian.

Well the people who conquered Puerto Rico were white or Spaniards from Europe. Really I like to call them Mediterranean because true Whites are from Scandinavia Nordic people. Black People or slaves did not come to Puerto till 1513 around 2 decades after Puerto Rico was found by the Spanish. The reason was the mass die off of Taino indians who were dying of disease brought by the Europeans. Those white are Latinos because they come from Latin Europe established by the Roman Empire

What makes Europeans Latin? They are part of the European countries that language was based off Latin & have Latiin lineage. They also have Latinized names & Their Religion is Roman Catholicism. It isn't uncommon to have relatives in other Latin Europe for example a person from Spain can have relatives in France & Italy or an Italian can have relatives in Portugal or Romania. A person in Latin America of European decent can have a cousin in Portugal, Spain, Italy or even France Romania.

This isn't the case for Sammy Sosa where his lineage is from African Descendants & of course was part of the African Diaspora. In fact Hispaniola was the first country to import slaves in around 1510 clsoe to 2 decades after the founding of the Island by Latin Europeans. Why Latin Europeans because their were mainly Spanish but the Captain was Italian & their were Portuguese sailors as well. In fact more Africans In the Americas speak Spanish or Portuguese then they do English.

Great video! Spot on, and really intelligent analysis. The main problem of course is that African Americans have been so racialized because of the country's history. They wouldn't be "African Americans" if not for racial prejudice. They'd just be Americans.

You always hear it grouped together "Black and Latino". We are grouped together. They even use the term "Minority" as an all-inclusive category to cover all of us. You do realized that Dominicans are mixed ppl right? A lot of them can be half European and Taino and African. Not everyone follows the same race rules that America does. Why should I deny my Taino and European heritage? That is as much apart of me as that African blood.

@prettyroyelle Actually the majority of the Dominican Republic population is 85% African and 15% Mixed race. The problem is that in the early days of Hispaniola their were 12 Africans for every 1 Spaniard. To make it worse half of those Spaniards either left back to Spain after getting rich or went on to the new world for more riches abandoning Hispaniola. Then the French brought even more Africans to the island that increased the population. This is why Trujillo started the Blanquismo project

They came from Ireland, England, France, China, White South Africa, Russia, Poland & any other place with light skin. Reality is that Dominicans are related closer to Haitians then to Spain. In fact the Relationship to Spain maybe under 5% or less due to all the whites that came from all over the world to whiten the D.R.

@prettyroyelle If you examine it closely you will see that when the Spanish landed on Hispaniola in 1492 much of the island was Taino. When the Taino started to die out they realized they needed labor. The first shipment of blacks about 200 was about a decade and a half later around 1607. The first mass shipment was about 1517 almost 3 decades later by that time the Spanish were already leaving for more land on main land American continent. Leaving only a dismal amount of Spaniards & 2% Taino

@nnnnnsssssssssllllln I hear you, people need to realize that the U-S has traditionally identified race as either white or colored (meaning non-white). Here black is relatively anyone with dark skin who is not white. So, the following people in America will at some point be called black. If you are Haitian, Dominican, Cuban, Puerto Rican, Jamaican, etc. Even dark skin Indian and Pakistani people are called black here. If you have any Afro-features you will be at some point considered black here.

@touggie2000 Argentina is about or it claims 2 B about 90% or higher of Spanish or Italian or European heritage. I have heard has high as 98% of population is white. Yet they are Latin & the percentage of black in Argentina is less than 1%. Dominican Republic is 85% or higher African descent with about 15% mixed race or Mulatto population.Latino and Hispano are European terms created first in Italy. Romans called modern day Spain Hispania & Latins came from central west Italy that included Rome.
