  • Canada is best country in the history of hockey. End of discussion.

Apparently links don't work in here so write "Best-on-best" to wikipedia...

  • @sami745 Alright so Canada has been World Champ 24 times and USSR/Russia 22times (cough) USSR started competing in april 1951 (cough) so I guess you're right Canada is just abetter team (cough) and why not checking the Loose-Win-Tie nmbrs? Canada 889–420–127 USSR 738–110–65 Russia 299-168-45 so far I can count ,if we combine Russia's and USSR's nmbrs we get 1037wins 278 loses and 110 ties ,but heh nvm guess Canada is just the better team.

  • only whiners blame losing on the refs. you commies lost the Canada Cups fair and square. Canada's better on small ice and quite often on big ice too. If you want to whine and moan go play soccer.

  • @hebber1961 have you ever watched the canada cup? my rabbit could do a beter job refing its pretty embarasing

  • in 1972-1991 108 games(104 of them in Canada,by canadian rules) played between USSR national team and clubs against best NHL clubs and Canad team the score is:USSR -58 wins,Canada 40,draw 10.

  • oh, yeah, my prior post mentions Canada Cup. I know this was NOT Canada cup, just wanted to mention it.

  • I just love those USSR-Canada games in the 80s. The best hockey of the century in my opinion.

So many great players! All legends you could ever imagine playing at the same time -both Russian and Canadian. No matter who won, hockey was just great! I can watch Canada Cup-87 any time. Although I am Russian, and the USSR lost then, the hockey was so outstanding, you enjoy every minute of it. I highly recommend watching any game of USSR-Canada from those days. :)

  • Well, let's not forget that the USSR players were highly paid and trained pros, and thus should have never competed in the Olympics or IIHF world championships, where the idiot Bunny Ahearne prohibited NHL players. It would have been great to watch the games with the best available players on all sides.

  • @stormcrow7878....Continued... In regards to best on best tournaments... Since 1976 there have been 11 hockey tournaments where every country has sent the best players they have. Canada has won 7, Sweden 1, Czech Rep 1, USA 1, and USSR/Russia 1. That should explain which country is the best in hockey. Russia is the worst team for diving and embellishing to draw penalties...similar to soccer. However, the 1981 CCCP team was the best team in the history of hockey.

  • @stormcrow7878 - I am also glad that you mentioned the 96 World Cup, because you obviously understand the concept of a best on best tourney. When the USA won the 96 Cup they could claim they were the best in the World. I hear so many Russian fans bragging about tourney's like the World Championships...when the IIHF puts this tourney on during the NHL playoffs... It's a nice tourney to win... but most Canadians don't take it seriously because its not best on best... Continued....

  • @stormcrow7878 - The other thing I wanted to say is I think there is too many Americans that underestimate the USA hockey program. I watched a video on the 1980 miracle on ice and I read alot of negative posts that the existing program is dead. The USA team in the 96 World cup was awesome..and they deserved to win and they came very close to winning again in the 2010 Olympics. The truth is.. Russia hasn't done anything since 1981...I fear the USA today more than the Russians.

  • @stormcrow7878 - I agree with you 100%. You are obviously somebody with lots of hockey knowledge..The hit on Kharlamov was a disgrace...but as you already know..Bobby Clarke is an a-hole. The truth of the matter is that the 72 series turned into a war and Canada was very frustrated by the cheating going on with the Russian Refs...We spent almost half the game in the penalty box... and most of those calls were phantom calls...there was even one point where the players got into it with the fans.

  • Ok when it comes to the Canada vs USSR/Russia rivalry, I am an impartial American. I have seen every game of the '72 SS, and all the Canada Cup games. (I am the rare USA hockey junkie:0) The Cnda Cup was NOT a BS tourny at all. Was it BS in '81 when the USSR won? Stop whining about refs. BOTH SIDES. Great way to ruin the legacy of those amazing games. With 1 exception: What happened to Kharlamov was a total cheap shot. That was a stain on the greatest hockey series ever! (Besides 96 WC! kidding!

  • @HidexHoldings - Saying that the NHL pros suck because the CCCP won most of those games is the stupidest thing I ever heard. First of all it was exhibition and none of those NHL pros really cared. Second, if Team Canada played against 6 NHL clubs, Canada would have won at least 4 out of 6 too. The only time it really meant anything was when the best Canadian players suited up against the CCCP..and Canada always won those series... i.e. all of the Canada cups and the last 4 olympics.

  • @robertsteven - Explain to me how the Canada Cup was a bullshit tourny with different rules??? The Canada Cup was the only tourny where Canada could put their best players on the ice... every other time the CCCP played a bunch of kids or amateurs. Whenever it was a best on best series.... Canada always won... this is a fact.... blaming it on the rules or refs is a bunch of bs.... In the 72 series the Canadians spent over half the game in the penalty box and still effn won... Different rules?

  • @squirrellylikesfish u still talking about 72 series. hey man shame on u. dirty dirty dirty play by canadians. clark on VALERY KHARLAMOV.

  • @Xatarnak - OK well if you want to argue about dirty play... When those games were being played in Moscow... Canada spent almost half the game in the penalty box!! If you watch one of the games... one of the Canadian players shot the puck at one of the Refs out of sheer frustration. I agree that the hit on Kharlamov was very dirty. I've watched Russia play for almost 40 years...and I don't think I know a team that dives and embellishes more than Russia to draw penalties...that's also dirty.

  • I am from Canada, and I agree totally with wg390 and Khoney. Canada Cup was a bullshit tournament, with Canadian refs, etc... Even the olympics last year had rules in place to favor Canada. The olympic tournament is an international tournament but they had NHL rules and the smaller NHL rink size to favor Canada, because everyone knows Canada can't skate and keep up with the Europeans on the larger ice. It was proven in '98, and 06, when Canada finished 6th and 7th!!!

  • what about all the super series we had against NHL? out of 18 super series the soviet union clubs won 14 lost 2 and draw 2 series. so your NHL pros suck

  • Canada 7 vs russia 3 vancouver olympics total domination we own the russians.

  • @seanpenn100 This is the CCCP not Russia. Not to mention Russia is #1 right now on the IIHF hockey leaders

  • @Potts132

They are #1. But almost all of starting lineup players are in the NHL...

  • nhl wouldnt stand a chance

  • No. Americans play play in the NHL liek many others; it'S not a matter of country, it's a matter of leagues.

And it would be great because there is a competition between both. We could build on this to be great rivals.

  • Well, Best players in the NHL without Russians? It'S almost like saying:

    Let's make a Canada-Russia Game.

I'd go with replacing the All-Star game with a two game deal NHL stars vs KHL stars. They say they can challenge the NHL, let's see that.

Well, it's not hidden the ultra-rich AK BARS will see many players there.

That could be more interesting that a East-West game. Our stars vs their stars. That could be very fun.

  • KHL is far better than the overrated NHL

  • Well, an overused Jagr near retirement gets 'bout a point per game in the KHL while he was greatly criticized for his issue with consistancy in the NHL.

I have to say that some ordinary players in the NHL moved East to find themselves almost being star players.

We can note a clear tendency to get higher results in the KHL than in the NHL.

Now, we know it's easier to score, but why?

Is it a league of lesser level or simply a more offensive style of play.

  • @xismxist

Yea - but NHL is much more fun to watch (smaller ice ring = faster game)

  • @bornovalov Ehh?? Suppose better for a fat player who are not fast and bad at stick-handling, he can check other players faster cause he dont have to skate a long distance.

  • @bornovalov Someone has never watched Russian hockey. Continental Hockey league is the best

  • @Potts132

Hey mate. If I were you, I would take off the sickle/hammer from your profile. To most normal people. it's the equivalent of having a swastika on your profile.

  • @bornovalov Yeah I know most people are pretty stupid, but I'm a little to proud of my heritage to take it down. But almost all Russian player's dont go to the NHL so thats a bad comparition

  • @Potts132

No, mate. I sayd most NORMAL people consider sick/hammer as bad as swastika.

Right - but the BEST ones go to NHL. It's a fact - no point in arguing that one. It's like - most Chinese people don't ever leave China, but the BEST (or smartest, t.d.) ones do.

  • @bornovalov The common man is a fool

Say's who? Just cause you are good you don't have to go to the NHL, I would call most CHL playes better then NHL

  • @Potts132

Дык - ты в каком мухосранке обитаешь? Хочешь коммунизма - пиздуй в КНДР. Там и будет рай. А в России красным не место, так-же как и фашистам.

    НХЛ рулит, по любэ.

  • did they really put russian language announcer on the air ?????hmm in 1987?

    Canadians must be pissed :-)

  • who won the game in the end?

    what score?

  • hahaaa cccp was better than nhl!!

  • Agreed.

Between 1954 and 91, russia dominated the world.

While the NHL pro's werent competing in national team at the time as far as i know, there is little they could have done to stop them.

And dont bring up "canada cup" because its a bullshit tournament, with canadian rules, and referees help canada all the time.

  • "Canada cup" was ashame tournament for Canada.

Referees were playing for Canada to help Canada avoid total humiliation by Russians.

All who watched these games knows what I'm talking about.

  • @wg390 I fully agree with you

  • @wg390 Русских хоккеистов слабы, они кататься на коньках, как маленькие девочки.

  • @GuyCybershy What for you are typing Russian,if you do not understand the meaning of the Russian words?

  • @wg390 I watched and yes the officiating was at times questionable. In fact it was as nearly as bad as the reffing at the world championships in the 1980s where any hard body-check was considered a penalty.

  • It would be a gross mistake not to take into consideration that Canada's best players were considered professionnals while the Soviet equivalent were actually civil servants playing hockey - or, if you prefer, amateur players.

I am not saying the candian players of this period were superior, but I am pointign the fact that it is an exageration to point at Canada sayign the USSR was tremendously superior.

I would stop at: The USSR played better and more entertaining hockey.

  • @Khorney I didn't think there were different rules for hockey, how does Canadian rules differ from international rules?

  • Comment removed

  • @stubs96:

In international hockey tournaments, canada is allowed to dictate alot of things that they shouldn't, on and off the ice. Canada get constant help from the IIHF, and the referees. Other countries cant do shit about it because canada controls hockey.

In canada cup and "world cup of hockey" for example, canada always gets help from referees, no matter what team they are facing.

Anyone remembering Canada vs CZE semis in 2004, or world junior finals vs sweden in 2009 knows what Im saying

  • @Khorney Canada Cup was not BS....having the greatest player in Hockey History and Lemieux is most definately going to assist winning. I don't ever remembering the KLM line saying "Oh those """Canadian""" rules are unfair". Or that they were getting shafted by Canadian (?) rules. There were round robin tournies. Their best vs Canada's- no BS ameture rules forcing us to use university players vs. their red army professionals. Canada was an unstopable powerhouse mid-80s onward.

  • @Khorney Мир? Швеции? Чехословакии? HAHAHAHA!

  • Krutov did shit in the NHL. Larionov was the real gem.

  • every player that has talent

  • The entire globe and it is assumed ot be the world's first hockey power.

And your reaction greatly justifies my point on having a KHL vs NHL serie. I am certain it could split the world in half for the length of this (these) game(s).

  • Krutov vs Kharlamov: passing and puck handling

Tough one to call, I think

  • Yeh Krutov is a true legend...

  • I´ve seen him live, I have one of his sticks :) I´ve never seen a better passer than Krutov.

  • krutov was the best

  • I loved watching Krutov skate. I was really excited when the agreement was made with the Russian Ice Hockey Federation to let him come to Vancouver. It's too bad things didn't work out for him but people were particularly cruel to him and I don't think that helped. The Hockey News was constantly running a cartoon/charicature of him sitting at the dinner table with a chubby face. He could move from the blueline in though. He's still one of my all-time favorites.

  • And he was one hell of a puckhandler. A great passer and a fantastic snap shot. When he got to the NHL, he had slowed, but when he got the puck, he could still handle it.

  • I remember a great goal that he scored in the Gold Medal game in the 88 Oylmpics against the Fins. The Fins won that game but Krutov made a very dull game at least watchable.

  • LOL, the finns won a gold medal game in the olympics 1988? Last time I checked the history books, the Soviet union won gold...

  • It was before the Olympics had a medal round. The Fins won the final game of the round-robin tournament but it was the Soviets who won the gold medal.

  • then it was not a gold medal game, but the last game of the tournament

  • You got it allstar. I don't think I could spell it out for you any better.
